Need help with a top case, lots of questions

I'm looking to add a top case to my 06 for some upcoming trips. The plan is to get a KKen solo rack and add either the Givi V46 or the E450. I've got a few questions that I'm hoping someone can help with:

1) The V46 Monokey seems to be the sturdier of the two, but more expensive. How durable is the E450? Can I throw a six pack in there and not worry about it? Givi says the Monolock is only rated to 6.6lbs while the Monokey is rated to something like 44lbs. Is the Monokey worth the extra cash? With the new baby, spare money is at a premium right now.

2) If I do go with the V46 Monokey, it doesn't seem to come with a base plate. Which base plate should I buy to best mate with KKen's solo rack? I'm looking for the lowest profile mounting solution.

Thanks!

I've got the E460 Monokey case and have been very happy with it. Looking at Givi's website, the V46 is rated for 10kg of weight, the E450 is rated for 3kg.

That's a hair over 6 lb for those speaking American. What are you going to do with this thing again? You could throw a six pack in there as you ask in your post, but at that point you're sitting on the rated weight limit of the thing. Frankly I wouldn't bother with the E450. The E460 right now on Twisted Throttle is selling for $210, the E450 is $165. I think it's worth the ~25% premium. My 2 cents of course.

I agree with pres589. I have the Givi E460 and it's a great case. (I actually travel with 3 E460 cases.) I've had no problems and it's very, very sturdy. And I can tell you from personal experience that it will survive gravel, hail, concrete barriers, and hard rains. It's waterproof and worth the extra money, in my humble opinion.

I was wondering something of the same thing. Anyone know of what kind of rack is on Ken's bike that he shows in the pic?

I did look at the E460. It's nice, but I really just like the look of the V46 better (call me vain) and it's only a few dollars more than the E460. I was more asking about the differences of the Monolock system (E450) vs the Monokey systems (E460 and V46). The Monolock systems come with a base but are rated to carry much less lbs. So either way on the V46 or the E460, I'm still looking at the added cost of a base.

Infidel, I saw that pic as well. I THINK it's the Givi M5 Monokey base. Maybe KKen can chime in.

To be blunt, a top case with a 3kg load limit seems like a toy to me, so I'd either find a cheaper case that can carry more weight or I'd start looking for the extra cash. I like to use my motorcycle for everything, every day, so carrying a week's worth of groceries or gear for a weekend away is important to me. If all you want is a box to carry rain / cool weather gear or hold your helmet then I'd shop for a physically smaller case.

You may be able to take a Pelican (or similar) case and mount it to the solo rack somehow, it won't have a nice quick disconnect like a Givi but it'll carry decent weight, be water resistant or water proof, and you get a lot of size options that way.

I'm pretty sure the baseplate I have is the M5 - sorry - not trying to be evasive but it came with my E52 Maxia Topbox when I bought the lot used - many years ago.

There aren't any "markings" on it that I could reference for you.

For what its worth - my topbox has been FULL to the brim with plenty of weight - and I guarantee MUCH more than any rating would allow. YOu get what you pay for - get something you can actually use and abuse!

The difference between a Monolock case and a Monokey case is what they are designed for. The Monolock is intended to be used on scooters, hence the small carrying capacity and the lower cost. The Monokey is meant for full-sized motorcycles and will hold-up better over time, temperature, and terrain. Go with the Monokey. And from what I've seen, RL Motorcycles has a better deal when you add the cost of shipping for Givi stuff.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Ken, Paypal inbound for a solo rack.

FWIW, I am going with the Monokey. More of an investment, but something I can take from bike to bike so it's long term.

I'm just hoping I can get the setup right. I might just drive down to Twisted Throttle and see if they can match it up in person. They're only about two hours away. Might be a nice ride.

Done and done. Thanks Ken you've got a great rack :491:

Installed the Givi V46, M5 base and KK's rack in about 20 minutes. Everything bolted together nice and tight. Hardest part was putting the stop light in the Givi case. Whoever does the instructions for Givi needs to be beaten.

I'm almost positive I have the E52 case that Ken has as well. I rarely use it, but when I do, it stores a ton and is very durable. I bought the case, universal rack, backrest and also the topcase rack from Importations Thibault in Quebec and had them shipped no problem. A little visualizing and drilling secured the case well. I put on a couple of rubber pads to reduce vibration off the plate. i agree that the guy in charge of instructions at Givi needs to be keelhauled....
