Researching Radar Detectors

I was looking at mounting a radar detector in a tank bag top cover Clear plastic sleeve , it would be directly behind the winshield on the bike, will this pose a problem with reception.

I also wanted one that can be set to a voltage reading, and read the charge going to the unit.

I've never owned a detector, I kind like the whistler pro 78

Noteing what I've said above , $3 to $400 is alot of money, $150 is more the budget, but what about having the detector in the tank bag top plastic sleeve?

As long as the eye of the detector is above the dashboard and can see the road ahead...it will have no problem sitting in that plastic sleeve. If your windshild is tinted...it will affect the detector's laser abilites.

It would probably cause a problem with laser reception, but when a detector goes off and says you've been hit by laser you might as well pull over, because at that point it's more a ticket detector than a radar detector.

Radar isn't strictly line-of-sight, so it doesn't matter if the detector isn't out in the open. I've had my detector on the floor of my car and had it go off. Obviously it's not going to give me as much warning like that, but it will warn. I've also had it inside my tank bag and had it go off.

The Passport 8500 X50 (Escort) display can be set to show voltage. There may be others as well, but I know that one for certain.

That is a lot of money, but you pays your money, you takes your chances. If you get a detector that doesn't perform well and falses a lot you'll start ignoring it, so you really haven't saved anything in the long run. You could check on eBay. A quick search showed several 8500 X50s available for around $250 with buy-it-now. One had a BIN of $189. If you were to be patient you might be able to get one cheaper than that with a regular option. Valentine's rarely get down to that price range unless their firmware is quite old, in which case you'd be looking at an upgrade fee that would push your total price back up into the $300+ range.

I have a Whistler Cruisader. The concealed installation is very convenient. I don't have to remove the detector every time we stop for lunch and such. It monitors voltage and has a HARD light in the helmet and a LED mounted above the dash.

Whistler quality is marginal. It performs great but components not durable. Mine still works but I have had to fuss with connectors and spray contact cleaner into the head set switch and bend the head set battery connectors to keep contact with the battery. I concealed the unit inside the fairing behind the dash and remote laser detector below the headlights. I bought new on EBay and it came with optional wireless headset light.

I like my Buddy's installation of an Escort 8500 sealed in plastic and concealed permanently inside his fairing. It is wired to the bike so it comes on with ignition. He uses a Screamer as an indicator. LEDs on top of the dash works well too. Concealed convenience, better quality, but higher price.

is it loud enough to hear with earplugs in on stock bike?

its pretty loud at full volume. you should be able to hear it.

get yourself the H.A.R.D indicator system. or mount it where you can see the arrows.

Just figure how fast these bikes get up to speed, add in the leo's that don't seem to like bikers, and the cost of just one tick including insurance potentially or a good attorney to fight them and you are up in that $300-400 range any way you look at it. The detector you just get to save you more than once. Radardetector.net has all the ifo and reviews you could ever want.

Beltronics SDi Driver. I've had it for a few years, saved me thousands (more like a license) probably. It can't be detected by radar detector detectors -- nice when you're in a state like VA where they're illegal.

I use it all the time on top of my tank bag (velcro) and under the plastic map area. When under the plastic, however, it can get hot. To counter this I've added some foam with some ventilation holes that the detector rests on while under the plastic. Basically, though, I always use it on top of the tank bag. Works great -- especially when I'm going on longer trips and the tank bag is higher.

If you guys are wearing earplugs like I do and slab at about 75...you are probably not going to hear the detector. Bright LED alert is the way to go. I don't even have the volume on with the TPX. The LED alert is bright enough for my needs.

Here in L.A. no one uses radar anymore. Old tech. Laser only and by the time they have you sighted with it they already have a reading.

Radar is still used by the mountain people. smile.gif

It seems like radar detectors pick up errod bands ahead of time to give some notice , would it not also pick up errod lazer signals ahead of time?

I know there is a mixture of both used in my area

Radar sends out a much wider signal than laser. Laser is more precise and will less likely give off a deflected or errored signal. Usually what your refering to as an error is more like a deflection. Good luck.

Let me get this straight. You mean some of you exceed the speed limit? Shameful!

I have an Escort 8500 (not the XL50 or whatever the newer one is). It can be programmed to read out voltage, which is a nice feature.

A laser shoots out a small beam and does keeps a consistent size. LEO's are shooting one car at a time with the laser and it will only hit that one car. Radar waves bounce off everything in the area and the waves get bigger the farther out they go. Because of this you can pick up radar waves before they are trained on you. As with a laser once you've been hit and the detector goes off you might as well go ahead and pull over. I used a detector for years but it broke and I never felt the need to replace it. Instead I try not to speed in heavily congested areas where cops are more likely to be. Knock on wood I've zipped by many cops while heavily exceeding the speed limit in rural areas and never had an LEO come after me.

Lazer seems to be such a small percertange of use, but I need an aide, my intuition and eyesight is declining.

In the city to the south of me , Lazer highly used by mc cops. I would actually take the detector there for a thorough test and use in my truck during the week and my bike in the rural areas on the weekend, where more than likely normal radar will come into play.

What detector did you have?
