Hello

Does anyone know what differences there are between a 92 VFR California fuel tank and a 49 state tank? They have different part numbers. What I really want to know is if the California tank can be used on a 49 state VFR?

Thanks,

Kevin

The CA tank has a vent nipple on the bottom that would normally route to the charcoal canister and the CA bike would originally come with an un-vented gas cap.  49 State caps vent thru the key hole.  You can run either tank with a 49 state cap, but you can't run a 49 state tank with a CA cap.

So, short answer is yes you can.  Cap the vent nipple (the small one).  The large nipple is the fuel over fill drain.

I have actually modified a CA (non-vented) cap on the 49-state (non-vented) tank…I just drill a tiny hole upward through the cap, exiting under the key flap. Doesn't leak or smell, but accomplishes the venting function.

You say "drill upward", is there a casting mark or a spot that is good on the bottom as a reference, or did you actually drill down to make sure your spot under the lid was where you wanted it?
