  1. I have a 1999 VFR and would like to install a rad fan blade with reverse direction of air flow. Many discussions mention replacing the stock fan blade with one from the VTR1000. I want to know if there is a specific VTR model year from which the fan blade fits the 1999 VFR fan motor/shaft. Is there a better alternative to the VTR blade? Information needed so I can order a suitable replacement fan blade. Help appreciated.
  2. Hi All, The last couple times I started my bike up I've noticed my radiator fan kicking on which seems really odd. About a minute or so after starting the bike the fan will come on for maybe 10-15 seconds. The engine clearly doesn't need to be cooled as the gauge displays just over 100F. It's been in pretty cold ambient temps around here, in the 40Fs, but I don't see why that would cause this. Other than that the fan functions as normal, comes on at 220F. I'm wondering if you all could give me some insight before calling the dealer. I'm real reluctant to do that, but it's still under warranty. Maybe the ecu does some cycles on startup and testing the fan when it's cold out is part of that? I also made a similar thread in maintenance/electrical but figured this would get more traffic. Sorry if making two threads offends anyone. Thanks
  3. Hi All, The last couple times I started my bike up I've noticed my radiator fan kicking on which seems really odd. 4. Does any one know what size oring woukd work for the fan switch that i could buy locally? Honda part is 13.5 x 1.4. I am trying to not have to have something shipped.
  5. I bought a custom radiator for my '86VFR700f since I had a low speed low side years ago and managed to ovalize my radiator cap mount, had it just right for 20 years, but I put a new water pump and samco hoses on it and I could not get the cap to seal again, ordered a aftermarket radiator for it, which is nice and almost had all the mounts in the right place, except for the fan mounts across the top. I am measuring my old radiator and just want someone to confirm my measurements before I have the maker change production. The two across the top - 7 13/16" or 198mm bottom to top short side - 5" or 127mm bottom to top long side - 7 3/8" or 187 mm
  6. I've managed to get my other VFR750 back together and have an MOT tomorrow, it's hopefully all ready for it and will pass. I have a couple of issues: 1. The fan isn't switching on. I've double checked all the connections and they look clean and good to go. Can I just try swapping the switch out on the left hand side of the radiator without bleeding the system? 2. A minor fuel leak from the fuel filter. It's happening at the point where the fuel pipe goes from the tank to the filter, it's like the pipe isn't sealing/tight enough on the filter itself. Are the 90-97 fuel filters identical? I want to make sure of this before I order a new fuel line. Thanks guys!
  7. So... I have jumped the Kawasaki ship a couple of months ago and got myself a VFR 800 FI 1998, it's been a good little bike so far but there are a few bits bugging me, I'm just wondering if anyone else has similar issues or knows a fix. Had it for about 2 or 3 months now and I've put about 3000 miles on it while the weathers been good, Oil and oil filter have been changed, upgraded headlights to xenon bulbs (55/60w) and swapped the micron can the last owner had on for a stubby. Since I got the bike the left indicator blinker on the dash has never worked, the indicators outside in the fairing are fine. I changed the blinker bulb, now it only blinks when the headlights are off. I've also never heard the fan come on at temps of up to 110c (230f) while in traffic. This weekend I took the bike to Wales, it was about a 6 hour trip back on A roads, bike never went over 100c (212f) even in stop start through Liverpool city traffic. Got home, gauge showed just under half a tank. And then the problems started. Monday morning, the next time I started the bike, I and went on a >10 mile journey, fuel gauge showed as full, I didn't trust it, ended up putting 15 litres in, its not budged since and I've done about 80 miles since then. The bike has started getting really hot, ambient outside is about 24c (75f), once the bike is up to temp it stays 80-90c 176-194f while in motion even cruising 85mph in sixth on the motorway. I've not let it get past 110c 230f while stopped in traffic, I'll cut the engine first but I'm sure the temperature would carry on climbing, I've not seen the radiator fan come on yet. Both radiators get equally hot but you can still touch them with your bare hands. I burped the radiator this morning with the bike on the side stand, squeezed out all the pipes and ran the bike for 10 mins with the radiator cap off to get any air out, I grounded the main wire to the fan on the corner of the radiator and the fan came straight on with no issues, heat issue is still there, fuel sensor is plugged in properly too. I've just ordered in a new rad cap, the one I had felt really weak on compression. If the radiator cap is the bad part why would that affect the radiator fan coming on? Could it be something else altogether like the thermostat or fan sensor or an electrical fault linked to the indicator lights and fuel gauge? I'm fairly certain the thermostat is done, but I know pretty much nothing about electrics. Any help would be appreciated, thanks
  8. I have been approached about the idea of a manual fan control that would allow you to: Turn the fan on early turn the fan off (to reduce power draw) allow normal mode Another feature requested would be indicator lights that would show: What status is selected If the fan is turned off but the bike wants it on (blinking LED etc)...could even be audible alarm What I am trying to determine is if there is interest in this on a wider scale. I have never felt the need to change how my fan operates but i spend little time in heavy traffic and I don't do track days or other cases that are different. My bike rarely runs hot although I have considered a manual "on" switch for the summer in the past. Another outstanding question is....self powered or bike powered. I could personally go either way...the default operaton (even with the unit off) would be for the fan to operate as normal....so no harm if the battery dies on a self powered unit. Feedback?
  9. :excl:Hey boys and girls. I have just bought a 10 vfr1200. It just hit 6000 miles. I was up in west Virginia last week. All was great, roads are the best I have ever been on. However when I got home I noticed bike was running hot. The fan will not come on. MF So this is what I did, I run power direct to the fan and its perfect. Checked fuses and there all good. Is there a fan switch on this bike. If so, where is it. Wrecking my brains now.
  10. I've started noticing some electrical problems with my '91. I don't think its related, but what do I know - I replaced the standard R/R with the Yamaha R1 Mofset version, went with the cables from Eastern Beaver and Wire My Bike, along with a new battery and starter relay so I feel like that was done right. Have been riding the bike for over a year since without noticing these problems: Overheating - this bike hates rush hour traffic. Its been hot a few times and no fan. Fortunately I've either been able to pull-off and let it cool, or have been able to drive along at 40+mph to allow her to cool off. Fuse was blown, dropped in another fuse. Ran it on the stand up to 230 degrees without fan kicking on. So replaced the thermo switch at the base of the radiator on riders left side. Still doesn't kick on at up to 230 degrees. Antifreeze is full and circulating. Turn signals - I noted last fall that the signals/horn stopped working, checked and replaced a burned out fuse. Didn't last long and have replaced it a few more times. This may be related to dead battery which was re-charged using a battery charger, seems to be the only single event shared each time I've had this problem, but I'm not sure of it. Where do I start? What do I test? Are these two singular events or somehow related? Thanks
  11. Looking at the radiator configuration for the 5th gen (assuming 6th is the same), the radiators are essentially a parallel circuit. Water flows into the top of both, or either, radiator and then out the bottom and back to the motor. So essentially, when the bike is hot and the fan is running, all the water in circulation isn't even passing through the left radiator and the fan. I have to believe that Honda had their reasons for this configuration but curiosity is getting the best of me. Maybe the radiators are too thin and can't handle the full volume of flow? It would be interesting to remove the upper cross-over tube, route the lower hose from the bottom of the right radiator to the top of the left. Then plug that remaining port at the bottom that was used by the lower cross-over tube. Thus, all the water would be forced to pass through both radiators in series. I have read lots of discussion about the VTR fan mod for cooling but never a peep about radiators.
