  1. I just eyeballed the blank, I didn't put a micrometer on it or anything, but once copied at a hardware store it opens my Monokey bags just as smoothly as the big red factory Givi key. Some of the blanks I see suggested online, like the Ilco B59 X162, look very different, and people still claim they work. I suspect the Monokey cylinder isn't the highest quality, so the tolerances are probably quite forgiving of blanks with slightly wrong dimensions.

    Spare Keys

I did a lot of googling to find spare key blanks for my 5th Gen VFR and luggage, and I couldn't find anybody who had definitively found a matching blank for the Givi Monokey. So I ended up ordering several that looked close, and I thought I'd throw my findings out there in hopes of helping somebody else. I've confirmed the giant red Givi Monokey that doesn't fit well on a keyring can be successfully copied using Ilco LF12: The STLUN/Emgo Chinese top box key can be copied using Ilco X84/HD74: And finally, the Honda key used in a 5th gen VFR (I assume other gens as well) can be copied using the same key! Ilco X84/HD74 can be cut to fit both the Honda ignition and the STLUN/Emgo top boxes! Naturally, this has led me to look into keying the two alike, so one key can start the bike, unlock the seat/helmet lock, and open the top luggage case. Unfortunately, when I took the cylinder off the STLUN/Emgo case, it appeared to be crimped sealed at the factory, and it uses some kind of weird square tumblers so that even if I did bend it open, I don't know of a good source for square tumblers to key it with. Being a brand with little support, I have doubts I will ever figure out how to order spare cylinders or pins to fit it. I didn't look into rekeying the Honda ignition and seat lock since I'd much rather mess with a $100 top case than my bike's ignition. Also, I doubt Honda has any official support for rekeying their cylinders with custom key codes. If anybody has done that, I would be very interested. Unfortunately, the Givi Monokey keyway is very different than the ignition key, so it's probably not a good candidate for matching the ignition key unless somebody could retrofit a STLUN/Emgo cylinder in one. For now, I'm just happy to have found some more compact metal keys I can carry on my key chain instead of three separate large rubber head keys.
  3. I just bought the AGV K6S this spring in L. I have a bit of a round head shape, and despite really wanting the Shoei RF-1400 to work, I tried one on in the store and it just wasn't going to be possible - the top was too narrow and pressed in the sides of my head. The AGV was a little bit rounder and fit like a glove! My cheek pads were comfortable but snug when new and are loosening up over time as I wear the helmet more. It's now been about a month of nearly daily wear, and I don't notice them anymore. Is it possible to put different size cheek pads in? On the AGV website it has sizes but doesn't indicate whether changing the pad size is possible.
  4. I tried using them to order the OEM 2000-2001 mirrors (88120-MBG-D01 & 88110-MBG-D01) from IMPEX, and they didn't state they were out of production and impossible to order until the next day after I'd already placed the order and paid. They immediately offered a cancellation & refund on the whole order, though, so they made it right. I just think their website/inventory system is a little antiquated.
  5. Yes, I've been riding around town and putting the battery on the charger between rides. After a week of that, it appears I can get around 10-15 miles out of a full battery. It's just enough riding to make me impatient for the SH847 to finally ship!
  6. I actually went the other way. Previous owner had clear blinker lenses with switchback LEDs, but he gave me the OEM yellows in a goodie bag, so I reinstalled them. I like the look of them, too! Problem is, I cannot get the rubber to stay covering the mount no matter what I do. It's like it shrunk over the years, and I think that part is out of production 🙁 Commuter + weekends. My commute is only a mile or two, and that's not nearly enough riding 😁
  7. Hello! I'd like to introduce myself and my new (to me) 21,000 mile 1999 VFR! After riding vintage motorcycles for a while (1970 CB450K3 and 1969 CL350K1), I decided it was time to get a commuter that would be a little faster, more reliable, and most importantly.... FUEL INJECTED! After a lot of research and soul searching, I decided the VFR should fit my needs nicely. It's a substantial bump in HP, with a more comfortable riding position than a supersport, and it has that unique powerplant - apparently I have a thing for unusual valvetrains. Once I decided on a 5th gen VFR (it had to be fuel injected and it had to have that gear driven valvetrain), I waited until a clean one popped up for sale near me and pounced on it! A 1999 VFR in very nice condition, with all the OEM parts (muffler, signals, passenger pegs/grab handles) included, and just one problem - it doesn't charge the battery. Upon taking off the fairings, the reason why became quite obvious: Luckily, the stator and wiring seem to be good. No internal shorts when tested, 20V AC at idle and just over 50V when revved, even across all three legs. I just had to order a SH847 from Eastern Beaver with wiring kit and I should be ready in time for the season! So while I wait for that to ship, I've been cleaning, restoring it to OEM condition as best I can, and taking quick jaunts around town in an attempt to satiate my impatience. Thanks for the help - this forum was a great resource in diagnosing my charging issue and determining a course of action - and I hope to stick around!
