Sprockets and chain swap

So I have a 2000 VFR 800 I picked up with 18K miles.  The previous owner said the chain was "newer" so I am looking at a replacement soon.  Was thinking of going 520 and changing number of teeth.  So is going 1 down up front and 2 up out back too much?  How do I correct any MPH error's?

A few random notes of which you may already be aware:

  • -1 on the front is approximately equivalent to +3 on the back
  • these changes may affect the length (in links) of the chain you need
  • increasing the rear may be preferable to decreasing the front due to the harsher angular accelerations on the smaller front
  • your choices will be constrained by sprocket availability

I recently went with -1F/+1R because SEBSPEED personally guaranteed that the fun factor would go up, my taxes would go down, and my wife would be more affectionate. I purchased the parts but haven't done the work yet, so I don't have any testimonials to share.

 

p.s. The easiest way to search the VFRD archives is probably to just use Google, but add "site:vfrdiscussion.com" at the end to limit the search to just this site. That's what I do, anyway.

I forgot you have a 5G. I think the stock setup on a 5th gen is 17F/43R. The 6th gen dropped a tooth in the front: 16F/43R. You'll want to confirm that, but the distinction would matter if you are reading recommendations from different riders.

Recently upgraded chain and sprockets on 5th Gen. Went with stock Honda front sprocket 17 tooth, I like that Honda puts rubber on each side of CS sprocket to reduce vibration.  Added two teeth on rear sprocket. Result is much stronger off idle and higher RPM around town. Mostly ride in the canyons, not a commuter. Went with D.I.D. ZVMX 530 chain and Superlite rear sprocket from sprocket center. Pretty sure Sprocket Center added a link or two due to the larger OD of the rear sprocket.
