2016 Sacramento Unification Rally

Thought I'd post notice of a bike rally in Sacramento on Saturday, 01/09/16. There is a small write-up about it in the January issue of City Bike page 2, and a link to the BARF posting here: http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=489878&highlight=unification+rally. Apparently this is the third such event; I missed the first two because 1) I am politically naïve and 2) I am generally a lone rider who minds his own business. But the new year is a time for change, and this is an event I can get behind. This is not a protest rally, but rather a demonstration of solidarity and force for the politicians to consider when debating proposed legislation such as lane-splitting and ethanol in our fuel, etc.

I have posted notice here, in case anyone who frequents VFRD did not get the word. I have been on one group ride that involved thousands of riders; If this one doesn't measure up, I can always come home the long way.

Ride departs the Bay Area from Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (North Oakland) at 9:00 AM on Saturday, January 9. Another group is heading up from the South Bay. Details on BARF.

Happy new year to all.

Well, since I posted the ride, I guess I had better show up, lest one of you esteemed VFR riders come over and then ridicule me for being a light weight. That would be unacceptable. Altogether, seventeen riders departed Oakland on a wet Saturday morning. Oddly, twenty-three of us arrived at the capital. Sacramento's finest were there to greet us and escort us to our reserved parking spaces, four on horseback and many more uniformed officers on foot, mingling to ensure the crowd had a good time. That would be the BARF contingent and 977 patch holders of all descriptions (riding motorcycles of one description). 90% looked old enough to be grand parents, for sure. Some looked like crack head grandparents. The ride was worth it, if not just for the people-watching opportunity. We milled around the plaza in front of the State Capitol building; there was a rock trio cover band playing live tunes. After about an hour, some wannabe politicians and AMA types gave speeches, telling us how great America is because of people like us.

Six hours thirty-eight minutes and 205.6 miles, door to door. The ride itself was not as spirited as I have experienced with one of you fine riders leading the pack. 87 mph through Dixon with the heated grips on "high", nodding the rain off my face shield is about as close to a good winter riding experience as you can get around these parts. It was worth it for me, and I'll ride with these guys again. The BARF riders that rode to Sac on Saturday were a pretty decent group.

Hey Jeff, better late than never but just saw you on page 8 of the February CityBike. Although the photo was B&W, I have to believe you were the MOST yellow bike there...and maybe the only VFR! I'll ride with you next year.
