Valve Adjustment - How Do You Keep The Shim In Place?

My first street bike was an 87 ZX600A. The plastics had been badly broken by POs, and repaired with fiberglass. The problem with that is FG is harder than ABS so they eventually started cracking.

I eventually repaired the bodywork with thin sheets of ABS, and pipe glue. It was a lot of sanding, and painting. The results were worth it though, and I doubt it ever cracked again where my repairs were made.
