Member Contributer Alien VFR Posted December 31, 2008 Member Contributer Share Posted December 31, 2008 Well, I decided not to wrap the midpipe, and just paint it. I didn't bother doing anything with the welds either. I was going to spend some time grinding them smooth with my dremel, but in the end I figured flat black paint would do a good enough job of hiding the imperfections. Besides, its sound is raw, so should be its appearance. On my R1 exhaust project, I'll take more care to have prettier welds and finish on the midpipe. As the chrome on the tips continues to degrade, I may black out the whole system or try a different color paint for the tips. I gotta tell ya, I'm enjoying having such a cheap, easily modified and easily removable exhaust. I like the look of the painted midpipe. when looking at the bike in person, it's pretty much invisible. Oh yeah, I'll be doing something to pretty-up the passenger peg mount soon. Here ya go... What do you think? BEFORE: AFTER:
Member Contributer vfrrider17 Posted December 31, 2008 Member Contributer Share Posted December 31, 2008 Looks nice. Maybe you should copy the Monza Exhaust paint scheme and add some yellow.

Looks great  On the other hand, you could use your current system as a prototype and remake them using that Monza exhaust Same look, just not as loud. Then you could run the same system all of the time. Just my opinion
Member Contributer motogpfan Posted January 1, 2009 Member Contributer Share Posted January 1, 2009 Looks like the rear rim is bent in the last pic.
Joe Foe from Buffalo
If you look close @ the front rim looks bent also in the second pic. Must of hit a curb or a pot hole.

Must of hit a curb or a pot hole. I hit a surprise pothole while leaned over in a 60 mph right sweeper. This happened on a road I traveled often and knew well. But all of a sudden SURPRISE!!!!! POTHOLE!!!!! SMASH!!!!! The bike was remarkably stable with no headshake or anything. It was quite a hit, but it basically just jumped the bike over about three feet (6 inches over the double yellow: lucky no oncoming traffic). When I stopped, I was quite surprised to see the amount of damage. What you see in the pictures is AFTER a local shop banged it out at my next tire change. Even at its worst, there was never air leakage or vibration. Lucky I guess. Don't forget :3:

Maybe someday, but for now I'm putting more effort and money into the R1 exhaust I'm working on. I can't imagine that the resonator eliminates that much noise compared to the open style I'm currently running. Any differing opinions?

Member Contributer vfrrider17 Posted January 1, 2009 Member Contributer Share Posted January 1, 2009 Well, instead of buying the tips, I was just hinting to add some yellow to your system, copy the color scheme. But Monza tips do have some baffles in them like what BR said. I used to have a cat-back Monza Exhaust on my Ford Escort GT... Didn't sound to hot though. Alien, Did you bead blast the pipes, prior to paint? To be honest, it will prolly chip and flake. If you blast the whole sha-bang, you can prolly have the tips nickel plated cheap, then ceramic coat the rest.

Member Contributer Alien VFR Posted January 1, 2009 Author Member Contributer Share Posted January 1, 2009 What kind/brand of paint did you use? I used Duplicolor High Heat purchased from Pep Boys. The can has a picture of V8 headers on it. Alien,Did you bead blast the pipes, prior to paint? To be honest, it will prolly chip and flake. If you blast the whole sha-bang, you can prolly have the tips nickel plated cheap, then ceramic coat the rest. I didn't bead blast or anything like that. I followed the instructions on the can. I cleaned the pipe then put on four coats. If it flakes or chips over time, that's no big deal. It's so easy to remove and repaint that I'm not worried about it. And I'm working on another exhaust project with R1 cans that I'll put a lot more care into. When that project is complete, that will be my permanent system. This exhaust is just an orphan project that doesn't have to be 100% perfect.
Member Contributer Alien VFR Posted January 1, 2009 Author Member Contributer Share Posted January 1, 2009 Also, if you look at the close up picture, you can see a paint sag right next to the passenger peg mount. That's the only flaw in the whole paint job. I didn't notice it when I was painting in my dimly lit basement... Oh well, like I said, this is just an orphan project. Member Contributer seamus Posted January 2, 2009 Member Contributer Share Posted January 2, 2009 Looks good. Do they have "chrome spray paint" at the auto shop? I saw some the other day down here, could be a cheap clean up for the tips until you get your R1 exhaust finished.

I'd try the gold just for shitsngiggles, but other than the front rotor carriers, there's nothing else gold on the bike. For now the visible part of the chrome tips are still in good shape, so no reason to paint them yet.
