Member Contributer tenniscorbin Posted January 16, 2007 Member Contributer Share Posted January 16, 2007 Garmin is coming out with a new model, the Zumo 450. As near as I can tell, one of the differences between the Zumo 550 and the 450 is the 550 has Text to Speech (TTS), whereas the 450 doesn not. What exactly is "Text to Speech"? It is worth having and paying for?
Member Contributer jeremy556 Posted January 16, 2007 Member Contributer Share Posted January 16, 2007 Text To Speech is a computer reading words to you. I have a GPS on my VFR, and I don't ever bother with plugging in the head phones, It is easier just to look at the thing every now and then. What exactly is "Text to Speech"? It is worth having and paying for? I have a Zumo and really like the text to speech which announces the name of the street you are approaching/turning on. I prefer the audio instructions and use the map to complement when I need it. I think there are other differences between the units. I am not sure the 450 has bluetooth or sat radio and make sure it has both car/mc mounts. I really like the car mount!
Member Contributer BonusVFR Posted January 16, 2007 Member Contributer Share Posted January 16, 2007 Here are the differences according to some GPS experts - No Bluetooth capability No XM radio (or XM NavTraffic - FM traffic is an option with an external FM antenna receiver) No Text-to-Speech translation ('Turn right in 500 feet') No automotive mount included No automotive power cable included No AC power adapter included No MapSource routing software included
Guest daffy
I just RAM mounted a Garmin Quest on my '05. Straight bolt up job, easy as pie and i don't bother with the voice stuff. It's not powered atm i just run the battery as my rides are not long enough to flatten it. I'm at work so don't have pics atm.
house
Garmin also came out with a zumo 500. It has a couple more options than the 450... not sure of the price. I love my new 550!
