As everyone else has said they're mostly bulletproof, but I'd only suggest buying a 25 year old motorcycle if you're comfortable working on it yourself or plan on giving lots of money to your mechanic.

Agree with that, most members here are fairly proficient with wrenching on motorcycles.

If you have a question on how to fix something, the answer is on this forum.

This is a great tech group and the best forum on motorcycles in general.

All that is left is the PAIR job...and I am..."a-scared" to do it. There's so much frackin' contradictory info on Al Gore's Internet about the mod itself, and whether it is okay to do on all years '98-'01. Any insight is appreciated. I'd sure like to tie a bow in this work by the end of Sunday.

I searched chain tool and variations of wording and found nothing in 15 minutes of looking. Finally right at the end I saw a video posted of someone putting a new DID chain on and it looked like he was using that cheap thing in my tool box. Watching further, I found out that it was in fact a DID tool, and lo and behold if you pulled the breaker pin out and turned it around, you have a rivet anvil.

We having a saying in New England " when light dawns on Marblehead" well, I had one of those moments. Of course I looked up DID rivet tools and was astonished to find they cost almost as much as a decent rear tire.

So, apologies Dave in Iowa, I finally get and appreciate your gift you threw in when you sold me your bike.

I have that DID chain tool and after using it a few times, its worth every penny. Its a fine piece.

Hey Mello, did you or anyone torque those hose clips down yet? 40 in. lbs.?

I have to go rent a torque wrench, not trusting mine.

Hey....I am going to do mine over the winter. I will probably buy a wrench off Amazon. There's at least 10 choices. Haven't decided which one. Dunno if I would trust a rental....

    No hurry for me though.

Did yours come with the wax unit lines, if your bike has that?  Gotta do hoses on mine some time in the near future.

Dunno, I haven't gone through hose by hose and laid it all out....AS3 sell separate wax hose kits though....

This looks its gonna be a winter teardown project. Probably thermostat, injectors sent out for cleaning, and general overview check out.

Out of interest I looked up the Norma clamps in the video and found the spec sheet here; https://www.gtp.com.au/irrigationperth/inewsfiles/Norma_Wormdrive_HC_Torro.pdf

Not sure which size he is using, 9mm or 12mm wide (looks like 9mm) but the values they list made me realize that the AS3 clamps are higher because of the extra width that spreads the clamping over a larger area. The values for the Norma clamps are 3Nm (2.2 ft.lbs) for the narrow and 5Nm (3.7 ft.lbs) for the wide ones.

AS3 spec 5 ft.lbs for their clamps, and a torque screwdriver set to that seems really tight.

I went ahead and bought the AS3 clamp set.....when I started pricing out all the Norma clamps, getting all the sizes was a bonkers task....it was then....screw it. Buy the pre-packaged set and be done with it..... As a BTW, the AS3 clamps are quality pieces, like the Norma clamps anyhoo....

  7. The pre-MOSFET R/Rs did get freakn hot and adding a fan was part of a fix to improve in the past.  But the newer tech MOSFET really dont get hot, just warm, no hand burn when touched... FH020aa....

  8. Yes...voltage is perfect.......

Agree mount flat on the frame...on mine I threw in one of my mount plates for a heat sink, (probably overkill)........as a BTW....ditch that thermal breaker....replace with a good quality 40 amp rated fuse holder.

My fav is a MetriPack 630, and typically I'll buy from CycleTerminal. Del City also has some good options.
