VFR750FJ(1988) - Stuck on the Hay Plains

Stuck on the Hay Plains between Adelaide and Sydney in December 2003 before Christmas. Battery was almost fried because the R/R was over charging and I was practically in the middle of nowhere in the summer. Luckily, I had some pure water and a farmer was able to get some charge into the battery for me which enabled me to make to Hay. At the local Kawasaki shop in Hay I learned about the overcharging and they had the idea of running with the lights on, which was optional on this model, and by keeping an eye on the water level at every petrol stop I made it back to Brisbane (over 1500kms) without any more dramas. I had a similar problem the day before but the mechanic who recharged the battery for me did not detect the over charging. It was the first time I ever had an R/R problem. Had an 86 model for 51000kms without any problems and I had no problems with the 96 model although I only got a bit over 40000kms on that before a large pothole f$%&*d things up for both of us in November 1999. This bike I picked up in Melbourne to restart my motorcycling. It was like making acquaintances with an old friend you had not seen for a long time as it was so similar to the 86 I had. biggrin.gif

Good pic! I've driven the Hay Plains quite a few times. Amazing at night, when the oncoming headlights appear 7 or 8 minutes before you actually pass the vehicle (and that's with an average closing speed of 200km/h, speed limit is 100km/h). One of the flattest places on the planet.

I've got a very similar photo but with a mate's car on the side of the road, bonnet up  And of course I got booked out there, you don't have much chance when the radar can pick you up from 15km away!

Good story. I'm glad that I don't have any "good stories" like that as I like my riding trouble free but they are fun to read.
