Guest
So.. buy 500cc or larger... its safer! Wonder if its related to newbies buying 'small' bikes as their first bike, getting into an accident, learning from their mistakes, then buying a larger bike, then avoiding putting themselves into the situation that caused the crash of their first bike? Member Contributer VF1000R Posted March 16, 2008 Member Contributer Share Posted March 16, 2008 Without knowing what those numbers mean exactly, it's almost impossible to draw any reasonable conclusions from them. If it's just pure percentage of total accidents, you can't really say anything about safety. A more meaningful number might be accident rate per 1000 bikes in each displacement class, for example. Just thought it was interesting, there are all kinds of variables to take into account to make concrete facts on this matter. Yes 1981 why wouldn't that apply, motorcycles still have two wheels. Member Contributer elizilla Posted March 16, 2008 Member Contributer Share Posted March 16, 2008 Note this data is from the Hurt Report, in 1981. In other words it's really old data. I suspect the numbers have changed since 1981. After all, we no longer even HAVE any bikes under 250cc, and there are precious few under 500cc. In 1981 the 600cc sportbikes that are so common now, were not a category. And the massive displacement cruisers are also a newer phenomenon. Guest
I would be very interested in seeing modern statistics of this, would be very interested in tying it in with my senior research project. Results of the survey coming soon by the way, probably within the next week.

I don't even know if someone could dream of punk-kids doing intentional stoppies on 190mph Busas.
