Hey everyone,

I finally got my Garmin 2720 and after tinkering with it for a few days, I'm not overwhelmed! I love it, but it has an issue where it just locks up on "acquiring satellites" when you turn it on. It's not all the time, but often enough that it's really, really annoying. When it does do it, it will usually clear up after several reboots and answering a few questions from the device... Anyway, the company I got it from on eBay is going to let me return it and give me a refund (EdgeGPS.com; GREAT folks and OUTSTANDING customer service. I would give them my highest recommendation).

After seeing how dang useful (and plain fun!) a GPS is, I am going to get another one; just not a 2720 as this is apparently enough of an issue that I found a BUNCH of threads on GPS boards about this very issue... Anyway, here's where I am now: the same wonderful folks at EdgeGPS have Garmin refurbished units in the Nuvi 660 line for a pretty good price. The only thing is that the Nuvi isn't "motorcycle friendly" and they told me they weren't sure how well it would handle the vibration of a motorcycle... I know some of the folks on here have the Nuvi 350 and I wondered how durable they were and if anyone had had any issues with them on a bike. I really like the Nuvi 660's features as it stacks up good to the Zumo 550 at quite a bit less money. But if durability will be an issue, I might just drop the extra money and go with the Zumo line.

Speaking of the Zumo line, about the only difference I can find in the 450 to the 550 is the packaged accessories, bluetooth, and speaking street names. Most of which I think I could probably do without anyway. So for the $200 difference (most places online) would y'all go with the 450 or the 550? The more I look into all this stuff, the more confused I get! Anyway, thanks for the opinions!

The Nuvi is not waterproof and if you ride often enough, you will get caught in the rain. Also, the Nuvi does not include the MC mount, so figure that into the total cost as well. I had the same questions as you and went with the Zumo and have been very satisfied.

When my wife bought MY Zumo 550, there was no less expensive version. I probably would have been tempted by $$$$$ with the 450.

This is what I have learned after 4 MC tours and several independent truck/car trips.

I need all the help I can get with Navigation and announcing the names of the streets as well as the distance to the next turn is very helpful especially when several streets are in proximity to each other. Ie cities!!!!

For example you actually hear Honey Springs Rd as well as the distance. Not just turn left in 300 ft/whatever. Handy on a roundabout and congested areas.

But it gets better - it announces you waypoints too - for instance as I rode up to Craigs house it called out "Arriving Craig". This is helpful for a guy who may call Craig .......... well Fred. Or it could be a reminder to "Call Home ET" or meet "Bill BMW" etc.

I use the car mount as much as the MC mount!!! Having both mounts makes your Zumo dollar pay off better - much better. I even take my ZUmo/car mount on trips with friends cars and on business trips (well trying to do business anyway). Extra mounts are expensive!!!!

Last but not least the BT thing. I am not a cell guy - wrong generation. But when I ride my VFR/Wing on tour I always have the BT connected. Several huge advantages here. You can hear the cell, see who called and see if you even have a cell coverage without a microphone. Talking is a bonus but not the real advantage. My wing is configured to talk too and on the VFR I just listen/see.

Plus you can actually see the Zumo screen and read it. Try doing that in AZ/sticks in the bright sun with your cell phone.

As a result I was able to find a cell zone without taking off my gear and call in a R6 wreck this spring and get the guy air evaced.

Doing this sucks...... On the way to Death Valley

THis last week on tour when I got two calls within 15 minutes I knew there was an emergency at home. THere was. Without the ZUmo I never would have known anybody called till the next fuel stop - maybe?????????

This was a very important call - very!!

To me - The extra money is worth it and I use the "Extra Stuff". Well worth it!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm... Interesting points. Thanks for all of the input. Especially all the screen shots, BonusVFR! Those were really good selling points. That really makes the extra money for the Zumo seem a little more reasonable. Now I just have to debate the 550's speaking the street name feature... besides the 550 speaking the street names and coming with the car mount, it and the 450 are pretty much identical...

Anyone else?? :D

In the final analysis as “Dirty Harry” said ……………A man has to know his limitations. :goofy:

If I use the "incoming call" feature to sell my wife on letting me buy it.....Does it mean that I HAVE to take her call?

Well, I finally pulled the trigger...

I got a Zumo 550. After reading back through a bunch of threads, and the input in this thread, I figured I'd go ahead and spend the money... Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week so I can "test" it out next weekend! Thanks to all who had any input.
