  1. 2012 VFR 1200 DCT owner here. I'll be riding along and suddenly will notice the bike shifts to 6th gear only going around 35-40 MPH, it suddenly starts to lose power and chug hard. It will not allow me to override and downshift, I then stop the bike and shut it off quickly and then I get a smell of clutch. I can restart it right away and then it seems fine, but at that point I am nervous so I drive it in manual mode. Oil is good, it has just started doing it recently. I bought it brand new, it has 5K on it and I have changed the oil faithfully and always replace both filters when doing so. Has anyone else ever experienced this or heard of what is causing it... solutions, etc.?
  2. Hello everyone, been lurking for about 6 days now searching feverishly to see if anyone else has had this, sadly I simply cannot find any matching posts. tl;dr= rotating wheel while in center stand causes a clunking noise as if gears are being engaged loosely. I recently purchased a 2010 VFR1200FD that I've had my eye on for sometime. On the drive home however I noticed that approaching stop signs I can hear the something making a chattering noise. When I got home I put it up on the center stand and while checking things over I believe I stumbled upon the source of the noise. Now I have to question, is this normal. Allow me to describe: 1. Put the motorcycle on it's center stand. 2. Start the bike 3. Shift it into drive (hear the clunk of the DCT engaging) 4. Cut the engine off via the key (this leaves portions of the transmission engaged) 5. Grab the rear wheel and rotate it CW and CCW What I note when I do this is that there is small amount of distance that the wheel is easy to rotate (~20 degrees), then it's as if the linkages hit something that causes resistance inside the transmission and small clunk can be heard. If I rotate the wheel vigorously CW and CCW it actually makes a clunking noise as if two cogs are hitting together. Almost like that feeling when two gears have to much spacing between there teeth so there is space between the point of engagement. I've change the final drive oil, and while doing so felt inside and note that there is no free play inside the gears. Then removed the lower fairing and felt the drive shaft through the rubber dust cover and note that there is no free play from the shaft. What I mean by no free play is that I can feel an equal amount of rotation of the drive shaft for the amount of turning I am applying to the wheel. This leads me to my suspicion that perhaps there is something in the transmission. So here's what I need help with: 1. Am I crazy and this is normal for a DCT? 2. If you have a DCT with a center stand, can you please go do the same thing and let me know if you find. Final note, I have called a Honda dealership and they ran my VIN and this bike has had the recall work completed for the final drive and shaft. Edit (Final Update and Closure) So in the end, this just comes down to a poor design in the Honda VFR1200F and FD transmissions which includes a bit to much backlash. Such that at lower speed the wheel and transmission keep racing each other, this causes the backlash to knock the gears back and forth. Sometimes the wheel is moving the shaft and sometimes the transmission is moving the shaft. When the vehicle switches between these two states the backlash knock occurs.
  3. I have a 2010 vfr with 33,000 miles on it. I recenty tried to the bleed the clutch and after some issues Everything was good. Over the weekend I was riding on the highway in 6th and tried to pass traffic and as I rolled on in top gear it was as if the bike was skipping over teeth in the gear. It almost felt like a chain driven bike skipping teeth on the chain. I went home and changed the oil. After a fiasco of dealing with a stuck on oil filter. Fresh Mobil one went in. There was a little but a glitter in the oil drain pan. I but everying think back together and went for a ride and low and behold it's still having the issue. While i was in thrrr I also decided to drain the rear dif fluid as well. After another disastrous bout of wrenching II nearly stripped the drain bolt and then managed to sheer of the fill plug bolt. I've been googling the hell out of this and haven't come up with much. Has anyone had to have a vfr tranny rebuilt and if so would anyone how many arms and legs is this going to cost.
  4. Hello all - I'm trying to get a quote for shipping a 2007 VFR800 engine and transmission. Before I take the bathroom scale out to the garage, I thought I'd check with the guys who would know how much this assembly weighs. I searched the 5th gen and 6th gen forums, and with google, but haven't been able to find an engine weight. RVFR recalled a past comparison between a CBR1000RR engine and a VFR800 engine that identified a VFR800 engine and transmission weight as around 154 pounds. I greatly appreciate his input, but if anyone has recent or accurate data on the weight of the VFR800 engine/transmission assembly, it would be great if you chimed in. Thanks, and cheers all.
  5. I'm tryin to get an idea of what this noise may be before blindly taking apart the engine/transmission. I'm hopin someone has heard this sort of thing before. My 2001 has an odd noise that seems to be coming from the lower rear of the engine. It sounds kind of rattley almost like the cat converter (CA model) has something loose inside, at the same time there is a whirring component to it that sounds like a transmission bearing maybe. It's been getting a bit louder over the last couple hundred miles. So far it's only noise. Shifts fine, rides/feels great. I don't hear it while riding but then I'm wearing a helmet. I'm the original owner for 85,000 mi. It's louder when it's cold and gets quieter with temp., about 5 min running. It's somewhat intermittent in that the volume is variable and sometimes blends in with normal engine noise. Any ideas? Thanks!
  6. Hi all, Since VFR1200 is not sold where I live, the dealers here could not answer my question. Can someone confirm if the speedometer on the manual VFR1200 can be installed on the DCT model or not. Thanks.
  7. I have a '98 that skips a tooth in second gear. It's presumably either worn second gear engagement dogs or a worn/bent shift fork. Here's my original thread on it from a couple years ago: http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/69064-slip-then-grip-under-load-second-gear/ The bike has been sitting in my basement, partially disassembled, because I haven't been able to find the time and motivation to get the job done. I'd originally planned on removing the transmission, inspecting it, and then ordering the parts I need. But that's too easy to put off. Once I've spent a couple hundred bucks and have the parts in hand, maybe that'll get me going to get it done. The questions is, what part numbers do I need? I'm going to get all three shift forks. Presumably I just might need the one that affects first and second gear, but I'm going to get all of them, just in case. (I would much rather replace good parts than potentially reassemble the bike with bad parts.) 24211-MBG-000 - $34.87 24212-MBG-000 - $34.87 24213-MBG-000 - $34.87 http://www.ronayers.com/GEARSHIFT-DRUM-C116559.aspx I never could wrap my head around how all of the gears mesh together in a sequential transmission, so when I look at the parts fiche, I'm stumped. Which two of these gears mesh for second gear to be engaged? http://www.ronayers.com/TRANSMISSION-C116594.aspx Any other parts I'm likely to need to fix the problem? Thanks!
  8. I was putting the bike back together today after a crash and noticed that when I have the clutch fully pulled in the rear tire still moves when on the kick stand. On the test ride, at a red light, 1st gear, clutch in, the bike pulls forward. If I have the brake on I'm fine, but if I let the brake off the bike pulls forward with enough force so that my legs can't hold it back. So it seems like the clutch isn't fully disengaging? I've adjusted the lever out as far as it would go. How do I adjust the clutch other than the rolly knob (technical term) on the lever? My fluid level seems to be fine. Thanks! Edit: Crash damage Lowside and damage on the left, then we flipped and landed on the right side, and I was able to protect my baby by having her land on me. Fortunately there were witnesses to get the bike off me and out of traffic, call first responders, and make MotoGP jokes with the bike coips while pointing at me. Left side: Snapped off mirror Crushed windscreen (It slowed my head a bit before it bounced all the tank) Helibar bent down to the plastic Clutch lever bent out Rashed/broken plastic Radar slider ground down, bolt bent & snapped off at the internal nut (Radar that's the one I emailed you about that I lost on the highway and then found. Glad I found it!) Bent kick stand, rashed center stand Snapped off rearset Rashed plastic cover thingy on the swing arm The clutch pedal is not bent, but I'd be surporised if it didn't take a pretty hard whack.
