Almost exactly 20 years ago I traded my VTR1000F for a spanking new VFR800. Both were first year models, and the first ones to arrive at my local shop. Over the years I've gone back and forth between VFRs and VTRs. It may be heresy to say so but my perfect bike would be a 5th/6th gen VFR with a VTR1000 motor. First pic is trade-in day, second is atop Sonora Pass, Cal., en route to the 1998 WSB races at Laguna Seca.

With Ducati about to release a high-end V4 super-sports machine, is Honda with so much history with the V4 engine caught napping? So who is copying whom? Honda was accused of copying Ducati in the late 1990s producing the VTR series of bikes (sadly missed in their lineup today) and now that Ducati is producing a V4 does this vindicate Honda's belief of the perfect balanced bike? So why is Ducati abandoning is trademark 90 degree V-Twin engine? Has the Vee-Twin reached the economic limits of horsepower? Is the physical size of the engine now impeding handling? Are they losing their Vee-Twin capacity allowance in racing? Or are they getting a runaway problem with emissions? Your thoughts...?

I'm certain this has been described here before but I'm having some trouble locating the information I need. Exactly what parts are needed to swap the lowers from a VTR1000F lower fork assembly onto 5th gen uppers? Obviously the lowers themselves. Axle? Wheel? Brake Rotors? Spacers? I don't really need a how-to, just a list of the required parts. I've wavered back and forth on de-linking and have come to the conclusion that I just don't like the feel of the VFR brakes. The system has been totally rebuilt including SS brake lines with about 1/2 a season of use and have never felt better, but I'm just not happy with it. I don't want a full front end swap since I am more than satisfied with the DMr fork kit.

From the album: my trips
The skies were angry that day, my friends. The wx report for Beartooth Pass was ominous so we changed plans and took the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway to Cody.© Lorne Black

From the album: my VFRs
This '05 VTR was my ride till trading it for my current bike, a white '09 VFR800A. It was my third VTR since 1997 in between the various VFRs. Who knows if it will be my last.© Lorne Black
