  1. Has anyone done a chain and sprocket kit on their bike, I recently did mine as -1/+2 520 conversion and now the bike keeps loosing what gear it’s in on the dash. It just displayed a flashing line instead. anyone had this issue and been able to rectify it?
  2. Hello, I have lurked on the forums for a while, but now I am in need of help. The front drive sprocket bolt will not budge. I have tried my air impact wrench (it's a cheap model, but I expect this would have some effect), and also long bar, but using the long bar the head is starting to round off. I tried penetrating oil but looking at the diagram I don't think it will work into the threads. I did try to use a blow torch on to heat it but a lot of smoke came off, which is either from the chain cover, but since seeing the diagram I think I may be melting the transmission seal behind-can this seal be replaced without removing the transmission shaft? Should I continue to heat it, or will it need to be drilled. I haven't drilled a bolt before and am worried about damaging the threads, since a new transmission shaft is costly and long repair. Oh and when trying to undo the bolt the rear wheel was moving when I applied the rear brake fully, is that normal? I have the spare pads but wanted to do the sprockets/chain first. Thanks in advance.
  3. Hi Has anyone tried a 18 teeth pinion on a VFR800 2007? Does the increase in outer diameter allows the chain to clear the pinion cover? Any torsion vibration issues resulting from that? I would like to go for a silent chain and the smallest sprocket that comes with damper is a 48T, so to keep equal or longer final drive ratio I need 18T on the pinion. Thank you in advance. Charly
  4. Hi all, Can you share your experience with modifying your sprocket sizings. It's time for a new chain and I figured I might want to try a different sizing on the sprockets. I'm plagued by the fact that I want it all - Higher acceleration would be nice as I do a lot of city riding and having some extra 'umph' in 1st would be great. However, I also do a lot of touring - and having lower revs cruising at highway speeds, and also better gas mileage, also appeals to me. I'm riding a 99 where the stock is 17 F / 43 R. Has anyone ever tried going lower in the rear and/or higher in the front to lower those revs?
  5. Hi I wounder if someone has good or bad to say about DC Chain/Sprocket kits The webshop say they come whit either a DC brand X-ring chain and Afam or Esjot sprocket OR a Did VM x-ring chain and Sunstar sprockets. They cant tell witch you will get, depends on whats in stock.....the price is ok thro, 129€ a set I have only experience from JT sprockets, that have been good in my option. Mostly used Did or RK chain so far. Thanks for you opinion so far!
  6. Okay yes, I realize that changing gearing does not change the engines output. But, here is your chance to save the VFR from the chopping block. I LOVE the triple in my Tiger 1050 because it has torque. I don't play in the gear box nearly as much, it feels smoother, and I can pull out of the corners with less effort. Yes, it has 20 something pound feet more torque. However, I am curious if changing gearing on the Viffer will allow me to better use the power available, maybe to mimic what I like in the Tiger. My concern with this approach is to get the effect I want I may be running 6K RPM+ on anything above 60 or so MPH, which, while I'm sure the engine can take, I would rather not abuse the bike. What works for you guys? Thanks, as always, for the advice! PRB
  7. Whats up fellas, I decided it was time to swap out my chain and sprockets so I gave it a go, and I was surprised how smooth it went until I hit one snag...I forgot to measure the diameter of the rivet on my DID chain before I started, so I don't know if I've mushroomed the rivet enough on the master link. I've attached a pic of what they look like, they look good to me - and the other rivets on the chain are 5.7mm; both of mine are right at 5.8mm. I'm guessing they are OK, but I didn't know if it was different for a master link. Any info is greatly appreciated! I've been wearing google out for answers and can't seem to find the right one.
  8. Hello all, I live in Agoura Hills, just outside of LA. I am going to change out my chain and sprockets. I am hoping someone in the Greater LA area has the chain breaker and rivet tool that I can borrow. I can come to your place and do the work or gather the tools and return them. I am in no real hurry to do the change, I just discovered a few "red" links, however the chain has 25,000-ish mile on so... Please let me know. David Riebel, PACIFICMAN 805-279-5770 riebelnet@aol.com
  9. So I have read through the 23 pages of discussions searching for the ultimate answer to the sprocket and chain issue...think I might be more confused...seems to be a six in one, half dozen in the other situation. I need a new chain on my new to me 99 5th gen that is now at 41300 km. There seems to be an on going debate on new sprockets with new chain...some say every time others say not needed. I am guessing these may be original as I can not find the pinned master link in the chain (which has an 50 RHF stamped on the side plate). So I am looking at new chain and sprockets..decided from all of the forms here that Honda OEM front with the added rubber is best with Sunstar steel rear as I read they are the OEM (only like Y cheaper as an aftermarket purchase than from Honda). I am struggling with the arguments of the new metalology and the 520 vs the original 530. I believe the new metal in the 520 today has a higher tensile strength than the 530 had when she came out of the plant yet this seemed to be an interesting read in the older posts. Stay stock gear 17/43 or do the common mod of 16/45? I don't think I can legally use the 200+kmh here in Canada so loosing a little top end speed will not be an issue. Curious to know of those that have switched to the 16/45 if they saw much of any, or any change on fuel mileage? Has the group come to a consensus on 520 vs 530 (I am looking at DID zvmx)? Stock or popular -1/+2 sprocket? Any change in fuel consumption?...mostly commuting to work know (looking for the road less straight) but in the summer I would go 250-300 km rides just because the day ended in "y". Thoughts.....
  10. EDIT: My title is wrong, I need +1/-2. I was wondering if anyone had any aftermarket 3rd gen sprockets (+1/-2 setup, larger front, smaller rear) I can borrow for a couple of days, for a small fee. I'm trying to screw around with the calibration of my speedometer and something other than the stock ratio would help. I won't be doing wheelies or drag racing on your setup, mostly because I don't want to hurt my chain. So if you have a 17T front and a 41T or even 40T rear, and are willing to ship it to the northern Virginia area, please email me how much you'd like for such a service (or PM but I have varying results getting notified of PMs). Nominally I'm thinking $20 + ~$10 for shipping. idrivea911@gmail.com Thanks!!!

    Superlite Steel Rear Sprocket

Ordered one for my 6th gen, but it will also fit from 1990+ VFRs, I like the powdercoated black look and for fun decided to weigh it at work. It came in at 1.4 lbs. Not bad for $54 shipped. I'm pretty sure the one I pulled off my bike weighed at least twice that much. that is all. :)
