  1. I would do a 20/21kg rear on the front how about .975kg (one .95 & one 1.0) . Ohlins should install whatever spring you want at no extra charge.

    Thank you for your answer.

I'm a little hesitant to use so stiff a rear shock, since roads around here are often quite rough. I guess I'll stick to 0.95 front and 19.3 rear, and maybe play with a rider-sag a bit more than 3.5 (if I can't get a decent static-sag). Does this sound reasonable?

Also: Other than from RaceTech, do you know where I could find fork-springs at this rate? Do you know if Ohlins or WP have such fork-springs (suitable for the VFR)? I'm trying to locate a supplier that has good representation somewhere in the EU (or even-better locally, I live in Athens / Greece).

comp/rebound will impact things more than anything with your bumps. the rate is necessary for your weight and to get proper sag geometry for handling. do what you will, but my suggestion is at least the 20kg spring.

  2. Has anyone actually purchased, or know anyone that actually purchased, one of their VFR 800 kits? If so, what did you think of it?

i have it. it is exactly what you think it is....cheap, with crappy mounts. mine is still in the box. i would sell it to you cheap. it will work and if you cant afford new and are willing to move mounts, redrill, etc, it would be fine. i expected something close to the honda stuff and it is NOT that.

again, not saying it wont work or doesnt look cool. just not what i wanted.

Which specific kit do you have?

i have the white black livery

  4. Saw this thread and decided to install one of these analog voltmeters. Not much of a wiring guy though - can someone describe exactly how and where you wire this thing up to?

    Thanks!

you take the meter and wire it pos/neg to the battery. you need a relay in the positive line and control the relay off of a switchable supply....what these means is tie it to the rear taillight as example as it is only on when the bike is on.

you need the relay to cut the meter off when your bike is not running.

search the forum as there are several threads on "how to" do this.

  5. He's coming up here in a few weeks, and is going to check the bike out then. He's offered to replace the spring (if he can get one to fit) and change the valving on the Elka, if it looks like being necessary.

You can't ask for anything more! I look forward to seeing what he does & says. I would also like to know the number on your spring.

PS don't forget, when check sag you should basically have rebound/comp settings on zero(full soft) so that your only measuring Spring and not any effect of damping.

BTW I don't think there is, but is there any ratio difference between the 5th & 6th gen?

You don't have your bike lowered or have flipped the triangle plates have you?

There is another member TC who says he has great numbers with an F4i shock & 900lb spring.

FYI...not so sure about the 900 lber....after riding the ohlin on the track bike, and getting my front revalved on the VFR, i am starting to see the difference...i have no free sag and the ride is harsh, so i believe it isn't set up just right. yes, much better then stock for sure, but i am almost convince of the need for the 1200 lb spring as i weigh in at 230.

i hope to find the time to try it before spring gets here

  6. this is a shock thread and that was a random post.....but since you did it....i have run cozye's map for 2 years now....stinks to high heavens because it is VERY rich....no problem running with catless....oh, and she runs like a scalded dog too....i have not tried Jasons, but meant to....having no issues with cozyes, i just never got around to it.

It was random in the sense that it did not follow the previous posts, but the original post was about both the shocks and the catless header. I missed it way back when, but it does talk about using Cozye's map and just wanted to throw that out there because running lean can potentially cause damage. Just sayin'

AH...gotcha...so long ago, i didn't remember....you are right about lean....all i can tell you is 2 years and no problems and lots of fuel smell, so i don't "think" it is an issue, but have not dynoed it to know for sure...

  7. I wouldn't recommend using Cozye's map with Catless headers unless you richen the whole map. Cozye's map is much richer than stock, but still probably not rich enough for catless. Tinymind's map is in the download's section.

  8. no difference in the shocks...

if you look at the 1st post pictures, you will see the black adjuster. it is difficult to get to. like you said, if you set it and forget it, fine...otherwise, you might want to consider something else. i have tried to set it with spanner, but haven't spent a lot of time on it and didn't have success. once i get the bike out of my garage (no room to manuever) i'll see if i can do it.

  9. my two cents:

    250lb rider

.95 up front with revalve ohlins by jamie daughtry

    950lb on rebuilt f4i shock

it is no where near as stiff as BRs and now that I have it dialed in, is great for riding semi hard, but still handles bumps remarkably well. BR and i have had this discussion and i hope he gets to ride mine soon, but unless you are riding aggressive on the street, i believe that the a 1200+ spring on the rear is too heavy. i have no issue setting sag.

Dale, somethings not right here. Your bike with the supposed 950 lb spring is/was TWICE as stiff as the rear of my bike with an 1100 lb spring on it!!! I couldn't even get the rear of your bike to move bouncing on it! +1.gif That's what I was telling you when I got off your bike, the rear wouldn't move under my weight, where mine was soft compared to yours!

I would have to guess that whoever built that F4i shock for you did something strange to it like an incredibly stiff comp shim stack or twice the normal amount of gas charge, there is no way a 950 lb spring is even close to being correct for your weight on a VFR by anyone's correct calculations.

I don't know what changed at ReceTech, but their Spring Rate Calculator for the VFR is Now way soft too, it used to be very hard, but Ohlins, Penske, and even JD will all come up with much higher and more accurate spring rate numbers for our VFR's.

Contact JD now and ask about what spring his calculations would come up with for your weight, he had to adjust his calculator recently because it had some slight error that was causing low spring rate calculations.

For whatever reason, your bike is NOT the norm!

it was because the compression was too high (closed). as i mentioned, i have set it up after the revalve job on the front and now it is definitely working right. i have the front with the new valving matching the action on the rear and for street riding with our weekend runs, it works great. you'll have to try it (if we ever see the sun again). just to be sure, i checked again; eibach 0950 spring and sag just checked out at 25-30mm (did it alone, thus the range) not sure what else to tell you.

  10. There were some comments about how losing weight makes the bike handle better, inputs are more readily felt, etc. That got me thinking. The average American is let's say, 50lbs heavier than your typical Japanese or even Asian person.

spotted a little typo in your post

The average American is let's say, 100lbs heavier than your

Until I started reading VFRD, I never felt my suspension was inadequate................ I somehow think most motorcyclists are the same.

It is a bit like Doug's comments on bad/good sex.........

what's this "bad sex" you guys keeping talking about?

  11. i just saw this and haven't read the entire thread....sorry to hear about the "off". glad you are "ok" in general.

i have really enjoyed reading about this bike over the years and know you had a lot vested in it. i hope you can rebuild her.

  12. glad you figured out what the issue was on your bike. i have an older model with speedohealer, so never saw the reaction you were seeing.

i would not "think" ABS would be impacted as ABS is a relationship between the two tires' speed and is based off of the ABS ring sensor sending back a pulse. it should not care what speed the ecu thinks the bike is going as long as the two tires' speeds are the same....but i could be wrong.

    nice write up too!

  13. Personal choice I suppose if you want the rubber top feel of the stock peg. I sell the entire made to fit drop pegs for less than the adapter.

Boss9, let me be first to apologize. I thought this was more of the buell ulysses post. I cannot understand why folks bought that over the BLS. That being said, I didn't see that you were offering another option too. I am sure your's is excellent in all ways and is a great option provided by a member.

    good luck!

  14. Wow, who dug this thread up again. Isn't it from 05?

    Best tire....

    no else

    PIRELLI DIABLO CORSA III.

I'm not so sure great grip but after only 2500 miles I'm down to wear bars on rear!!! front still have 50% left i just had corsa III installed in DEC and looking for a new tire already. thinking of going back to conti rd attack got 4000 miles out of them almost as grippy. what kinda mileage are you guys getting on a rear pr2 ?

pr2 on the back just died...3700 miles which is AMAZING!! PP was getting 2200 and like everyone said, it sticks VERY well.

i have been running diablo front w/ pr2 rear and pp front with pr2....both work quite well for street finding.
