  1. Time for a few pages, in Cycle World.

Yes, sounds like it's time to send an email Peter Egan's way and get an article going if you really want to reach out to prospective buyers.

Awesome kit Dan, looks absolutely professional top to bottom, including the website. The package was worth the wait and the work you've obviously put in to it.

Now, I need to sell a certain VF1000R to afford this..

  2. Nice, looks good, mine is wired up almost exactly the same and the remote mounted in same location. I ran the wires to a relay though that ties in to the high beam circuit so I can just click the high beams.

  3. I dont know if it wil help, but since I put on the 929 shock, I have a spare 5th generation shoc that anybody is welcome to have for their 4th gen. (i dont know if the 5th gen is any better than the 4th gen)

Hi, Can you mesure how long the stock 5th gen shock is?

I´m currius to know. I try to figur out to fit a 4th gen Öhlins to my 5th gen, but dont want to take out the shock if any can mesure from one alredy out.

    Thanks

    My 5th gen shock is ~ 12 13/16" (325mm) eye-center to eye-center.

  4. I needed to take a break again from the motor headache. Right now I'm working on fitting the VF1000F side panels. Fit, mark, cut, check. Mark, cut, check, repeat.

Just about done with both, gotta do some finish sanding, that will take care of the fit part. There are 3 mounting nubs on these panels just like on the 750 parts - 2 of them fit exactly where the 750 parts do(at the tail fairing and the lower mount), but the gas tank mount is not the same. I have extra panels, I think I will cut the nubs off one that already has a broken tab, and plastic weld them to the newly fitted panels. Gonna go see now if that'll work.

I've been taking pics and will post them tonight or tomorrow morning. Stay tuned.

I feel your pain, I went through this with some exhaust studs on my old cb750. Not fun.

  5. I have the RC51 front end so I was thinking, for me, this color is almost a perfect match to the front forks, see Tom's mutant VF. May tackle it this winter. Toro's looks good but I'd go with a flat black.

  6. Is there an Ohlins # spring for the 929 shock( on a 5th Gen) in the 18-19KG range?

    More info:

How To Read An Ohlins Spring Code

1091-34/100 is an example of a code you will find on an Ohlins shock spring. Using the below charts you can “decode” what you are looking at.

The 1091 refers to the diameter and the length of the spring. Almost all Ohlins springs have a diameter of 57mm so that’s easy, the 1091 in this case means it has a 160mm length (when not on the shock)

The -34 is the spring rate. For some unknown reason Ohlins uses it’s own numbers to label rate, but below on the rate conversion chart you can cross reference this number. In this case a -34 is a 10nm or 10.19kg or 571lb spring

The /100 is the springs rate in Newton meters, but without the decimal. In this case the /100 means it’s a 10.0nm spring.

Not sure what the stock spring diameter is, you'd have to measure that and check the Ohlins charts again.

Is there a listing anywhere of the stock spring rates for the VFR Showa shocks? Specifically the 5th gen?

edit: Racetech website to the rescue, they report 15.3 kg/mm (stock).

  7. Yep, it's a 929 lower and yes, I had to swap stems. The R stem comes out easier than the 929's. I had to heat up the 929 lower just a bit. I then cut the 9's stem a few inches above the lower so I had a shorter piece to "wack". Wish I had a press but you do what ya gotta do. The R's stem is smaller in diameter. I welded on some material then turned it down to the correct size then reverse "wack". I think Tom cut his 51 stem flush to the lower then bored out what was left inside to the R's dimension. I haven't ridden it yet but I think it will great. really for looks but if it handles then woohoo! I've seen some fork swaps that really squat the frontend down. A little more weight on the front is fine but visually, it's a bit much for me. With my modded upper, I'm sure I can get REAL close to stock stance. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I asked about this but Tom didn't mention the different stem sizes just that they swapped over and I hadn't taken a very close look at it until now.....now I see the R is 30mm dia and the RC is 35mm. Great.. sad.gif

  8. Starting an upgrade to my kF's front. I tried a set of 929 forks but they were too short so I got an RC51 set. These too were still a little short so I took a 51's lower triple clamp and machined it to act as an upper. Not only does it now allow me to drop the forks lower, it looks damn cool. Not sure if i'll go clip on's or dirt bars. I've got the RC45 tail all but glassed in to follow the tank and the single swingarm is now all lined up. It will get an R motor (freshly painted)which will go in with just a few mods. It's tight but it does fit. I just had to swap around some coolant piping. I'll keep you posted.

Kel, it looks like you used the 929 lower. Did it fit the frame or did you swap out the steering stems?

Looks great, I'm going through a similar RC swap on to my '85 R.

  9. Looking great!

I love the white wheels but it seems like they would be so much maintenance. What's that shock from again?

    Must post more pics!

  10. Great work there!

Care to expand on the comparison between the R1 and RC front ends? I have the RC on my '99 currently, would appreciate feedback on the differences.

Bike looks great, blue color, wheels and all.

  11. No Repsol?!? Never used the stuff but I hear some guy named Nicky likes it..

I've stuck with Valvoline for 20 or so years. I just haven't been convinced synthetic or MC specific oils have enough benefit to justify the additional mortgage on the house to pay for them. The evidence may be there, I just haven't bothered to look for it..

  12. 1985 Honda VF1000R SC16 with DRP stage 3 cams, ported heads with race springs and titanium retainers, K&N filter, Dynojet kit, ignition 3 degrees advanced.

    So, yeah, it's pretty serious.

    .

Man that sounds wicked...

  13. The larger RC51/929/954 triples with the 54/50mm USD forks are extremely close to fouling the inner fairings throughout their rotation and even when pointing straight ahead.

Mine don't rub, but they're awful close. ][

One might be able to forego running the black inner fairing pieces (talking 5th gen here) down where the lower triple is, but I'm not sure how much room that would gain you, I've never investigated.

Mine did rub for whatever reason so I removed the inner fairing. There's all kinds of room now, you can reach in and change the turn signal bulbs, unplug your coil wires if you want, carry a lunch, store a cat or small dog... +1.gif
