  1. I have two spare helmet locks from my '83 and '85 Interceptors That I won't be using; they're similar in design, and available to anyone else who wants to try this mod. Just have to have extra keys made.

Cool mod by the way.

  2. I wonder if a volume knob from a car radio could be made into a variable 'heat troller'?

It would need to be a 0 to 2 ohm pot, and handle at least 10 watts. I don't think there is anything like it out there. If there were, it would be BIG!

How big? The heat-troller unit isn't very big.

The heat troller is a chip that turns the power on and off very fast. The potentiometer (sp) would drop voltage over it, just like a resistor. So they work very differently. Have you ever seen a remote control car with a speed controller in it? (not the computerized kind) It's the kind that takes a servo to move a conductor back and fourth against a large resistor. Probably nothing like it for our application...

I think you could fit a mechanical speed control into a box the size of a heat troller, if not smaller. It would just have to be made of aluminum(the box), with some perforations or venting. And on that note, you'd need to find an older one, the newer types are only two or three points of contact, aren't they? I think I might have an old Tamiya one in my r/c box up in the attic of the garage, might even have an electronic one in there. Can they handle 12 volts? Most of those battery packs are 7.2v, and 1.2-2 amps(I'm sure they go much higher now).

A mechanical one could be cost effective, I guess?

edit: it would have to be a mechanical one too, since the electronic/digital ones take their signal directly from the receiver, but if the msc can handle the 12v load, it could be triggered with a relay and operated by hand with a knob instead of by servo...

Ok! Who's gonna be first to try it??

(Don't all raise your hands at once...)

  4. In the case of my '83, I'm doing this mod to replicate what Honda did to their race bikes back in the day(although I'm keeping the stock gauges).

They must have used the small round res for a reason, because the stock one would have bolted on just as easily...

  5. Not meaning to hijack your thread FotoMoto... But your pictures reminded me of the question I had for a while: why do people replace their brake reservoirs with these... things?

Some bikes come like that in the first place, others change them when changing brake calipers(to match piston sizes).

Others may do it for the weight savings, and/or to lend a racing look to the controls.

  6. Very nice Doug!

What's the part # for the straight bar? It looks like that one would give dimensions(rise) close to stock if used with the standard risers?

So as you can see from the price of these bars plus the mounts, you're looking at less than 1/4 the price of LSL setups if you don't need longer throttle cables or brake lines. Inspecting the basically identical handlebar setup on my former Bandit1200S is what got me to try this myself and I've done it to each bike I've owned since then.

    Thanks!

I'm keeping my eyes out for used risers from a dirt bike to use for this mod... should be able to find them for the least amount of $$$.

I know most on this board would use this mod to raise their bars; I'm looking to convert my VF750F to the straight bar and would like to keep a lower profile.

  8. I've riding to work every day to keep from burning gas in my truck, and it's been getting chilly this week with temps in the 20's every morning.

I stay pretty warm, the only piece of gear I'm missing is a balaclava; my nose, cheeks and forehead get pretty cold.

    Otherwise I wear:

-long sleeve tee with a regular tee over it

    -jeans

    -thick cotton socks

    -Icon mainframe helmet

    -Schampa fleece neckie(the bandanna kind)

-Tour Master Advanced 3/4 jacket w/ liner in(REAL warm, even in the 20's I get to work with almost sweaty pits...)

-Joe Rocket Alter Ego pants - I haven't been using the rain liner, because it's a pain to get them on over jeans with the liner in, but I find just having

the extra layer and especially the knee pads helps a lot!

    -Alpinestars Storm gloves

-Oxtar TCS Evo boots, they're not perf'd, so they do a good job at blocking the wind. I keep a pair of steel toe boots at work to change into.

I'm also using grip heaters, they do make a world of difference. Another thing I'm thinking about is Slammer's heated seat mod, being that the kits are cheap, and somehow all the cold air spills over the screen and tank directly into my crotch... :joystick:

  9. I was poking through the scrap barrels at work today, trying to get my hands on some of our thicker titanium, which is about .100", but them I realized I might not want this thing to be too light(I'm going to use it in the garage, not bolted down). I gonna see if we have some stainless tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to some steel welding, it's been a while. Mostly I'm just doing TIG butt welds on thin aluminum(.040"), so I need a change of pace every now and then!

  10. Looks sweet Chris! I'd like to have a set of the drawings when you finish them.

    keith

I think this calls for another VFRD donation... the money we're saving over a Condor chock... sheesh!!

No hurry Chris, the weekend is still 4 days away(that's when I'd have time to build it).

ps - I have the same wiggly garden sprinkler for my son, those things are fun!!

  11. Great idea! Nice to see it works too!

How about some blueprints and a list of materials?

Edit: Is it big enough that you could back the bike into it too? Probably not, but I guess one could make a second version in a bigger size to hold the back wheel.
