  1. I traded the 1200 VFR a year or so ago for a KTM GT. Similar idea, but different take.  The KTM has roughly the same HP, but 100lbs lighter, much more torque.  I always loved the engine on the VFR it was a monster, I could pass a slow mover on a 2 lane road without even having to downshift, and be around them in mere seconds.  The KTM is even more torque and it wizzes by rather quickly too.

I was a bit tired of the VFR because I had this constant elbow pain, something about the ergos put a strain on my elbow, and my knees would be wrecked after a half a day of spirited riding.  The KTM has a much more upright riding postion, which in itself has a whole different set of trade offs.  Taller seat height, which I remedied with a set of lowering springs, stiffer and it dropped the KTM 20mm.  Wow what a difference that made.

I really like all the doo dads too, semi active suspension.  I would describe the suspension settings as Comfort - wallow, Street - not quite, Sport - Bumpy as F**K.  The new springs really improved that too, its dialed in now.  I had an Ohlins shock on the 1200 that I kept for 12 years and had rebuilt 3 times, and Andretti front cassettes and springs, it was about as good as it gets, but I never could get the front end just right, but it worked ok fully adjustable one fork was rebound the other was compression - and old racer solution from way back in the day.  I sold it because I just cant do that bent over knee wrenching riding style anymore.

So far I am happy with the KTM, I put 80,000 miles on the Veefalo, so far I havent even scratched the surface on the KTM. 6k maybe now?

I am getting ready to put on new sprockets and chain, new tires, oil and filter, and then a valve adjustment. Some weird KTM required cleaning, a strange oil port you have to clean to get smooth shifts, its got a little removable oil jet you have to clean every few thousand miles.

Here is a you tube vid of me an 3 guys in tow doing one of my favorite local rides to Bishops Castle in southern Colorado, make sure to crank up the quality..Youtube always puts it in the lowest setting???

  2. Well folks, the well has dried up on me.  I ran out of funds 2 months ago and have been paying out of pocket to keep this place funded.  I must admit I have not logged in regularly but I do log in to fix things when I see them or get notifications for.

Fact is in the last 2 years donations have not met our budget goals.  I had some surpluses from the previous years I just kept in the paypal account and that I just saved. Last year I moved the server to a cheaper service and saved $900 buck for the year so I budgeted accordingly.  I only met 77% of the budget in donations and used up all the surplus to fund the rest.

So far this year my records show only 2 made as of the start of the year!  the goal is 2K $$ to keep this place funded for the year. I have a zero balance in the paypal account as of 2 month ago.  I love vfrd but its too expensive for me to fund on my own.

All the records can be found here

If you still find this place of value to you please help out. Jeez I hate sounding like National public radio, or Public TV but this place have never had adverts and has always relied on member donations.  Thanks

  3. I banned about 5 spammers, and delt with a bad thread, issued a temporary ban for inappropriate behaviour.  For the most part this place polices itself but once in a while I have to step in and let people go, or at least put them in vfrd jail. Hate that, I hate that, I hate having to do that sort of thing.

In any case i have not been able to get the server mail function to work, I am at my wits end. I am sure its probably some syntax thing in the configuration but it just wont sent out mail for notifications, and I have not been getting notified when bad things happen here.  Working on it.

  4. It's got a few issues, blown fork seal cheap to replace, the oil change was a motha, 3 drain points and separate oil tank. 10 w 50 required by ktm. Dry sump like a dirtbike. Nothing g serious.  Who would have thought its easier to do an oil change on the 1200 veefalo.

Then I rode it, the vee twin has a thunder coming out of those Akropovic twin exhaust. Gobs of torque, it's not the I dont need to downshift torque of the veefalo but a 450lb bike compared to 650lbs it so much more nimble.

I was riding up a hillside road in town that's a 15% grade for almost half a mile. Tons of cars choked up the 4 lane road. I saw a little bit of daylight and boom I was gone. It was so much fun walking away up that hill from the throng of cars.

I have gotten lazy with downshifts riding the 1200f, the ktm you need to downshift on slow speed cornering. Just a different kind of bike, it's really made me a feel a renewed sense of ridership. I still love the veefalo, I'm never going let her go.

  5. I rode a 1280 KTM in Austin a few years back at the demo ride KTM tent. I really loved the awesome motor and supple suspension. It was way way way out of my price range. So I forgot all about it.

Reverse course a couple of weeks ago I was bored at work on my break, scrolling thru cycle trader on my phone, just a bunch of boring metric cruisers and squid owned bikes. I decided to look at my local dealership online inventory. Oh snap they had a 990 Super Duke with 10k miles on it, and 5300 dollars. Just so happens I had the cash, fast forward. Turns out a squid owned it previously. Removed the mirrors, sprocket cover, hugger. Dropped it. But in decent shape. Price was right, made the dealer fix some stuff. But now I got 3 bikes in my tiny garage.

    Miguel,

For having it that long you've definitely recouped your money.    Do find much magnetic debris when you clean it?  The capacity to catch that seems like a real plus.

Yes a small bit of powder I have to wipe off the magnet, scott is rated at 35 microns absolute, honda oem is 20 microns 70% so its a bit of a wash. I however have done 20 or 30 changes on the same filter, its been cleaned in kerosene and dish soap, back flowed hot water its much better oil flow then a paper filter, rated to 600f degrees, no paper filter is rated for that since it is glued in while the scott is welded.

  7. I bought a scott  stainless steel mesh filter for my 98 vfr 18 years ago and still used it for my 2010 vfr1200.  It is good for 35 microns, I have had to replace the gasket only twice. and it has a magnetic prefilter. I think I paid 80$ for it and its still in great shape. The outter part has some road gunk on it and some marks from a wrench its not as pretty as it once was but still an awesome filter. Its a bit messy cleaning it during oil changes but so?
