Have you tried to reduce the vibrations at source? I could do 400 mile days on Scottish country roads on my Y2K 800.

    1. Balance the throttle bodies.

    2. Check tyre / wheel balance front and rear.

    3. Check chain & sprockets condition and chain tension.

At the hands end how about thicker gloves? OK you will lose some sensitivity but numb hands don't have any!

A left field suggestion - are you getting good blood flow to the hands? Check clothing at armpit/elbow/wrist is not restricting.

PS You have an R missing from your avatar self-description.

This thought triggered another idea. Every one of my fifth gens (5) has needed steering head bearings. When loose or worn out (Honda used cheaper ball bearings) it some times mimics a cupped front tire, i.e. vibration. My first fifth was originally diagnosed by the dealer's service tech with cupped tires; when I replaced them the problem was still there. That's when he showed me how to check that. While on the center stand he had me press down on the pillion seat to raise the front wheel into the air. He then slowly turned the front back and forth. He said there is a "notch" in the center of the movement that I could also feel. The solution was installing All Balls tapered rolling bearings. Issue cured. Five times. One bike exhibited the problem at 28,000 miles (such a youngster!). On my first it happened near 80,000 miles.

    Once again, good luck t.i.n.s.

hi Max. there isn't an underlying condition, but i started indoor climbing some months back and this has aggravated what already happened on long rides. I remember seeing the grips you describe, but can't find them now. i think i'm going to try a pair of "grip puppies" and see if they work at least as well as my foam.

do you still use softer than standard grips? if so, which ones?

No on the non-oem grips. Two of my fifth gens came with some aftermarket grips, two layers with red underneath and black with cut-out so the red showed through. I sold the first machine with them. Then a subsequent fifth had the same grips that were very worn out. Since my first fifth gen's oem grips were still unworn at 105,000 miles when a deer KIA'd it I've stuck with oem since. No complaints with them, luckly.

Hope you can find something that works. Numb hands are a pain in the.... wrist.

  3. Back in the old days of 1969 I bought a set of grips that had lateral sections of gell making the grips semi-squishie. I've not seen anything like them but then I have not been looking.

Have you determined that you have no wrist issues like carpal tunnel syndrome? I had CTS and the same symptoms. The numbness was no longer an issue after surgery which I understand is much easier since I had mine done eight years ago.

    Good luck.

Mot sure if i can go due to the dates.

Maybe we should all rent Harleys.

Whomever is on logo design for Summer Summit 4, there are four M's in the title, which could symbolize mountain peaks.

I sure hope you can make it MotorMike. You are a fabulous wingman.

The HD rental is a joke but I''m not sure I'm capable of riding one of those big beasts.

You could try adapting something like this to your 5th gen:

Or maybe try to blend in:

Here's hoping you make it safe and sound whichever method you choose!

Thanks Belfry. Those are funny. The guy in the fur looks like he just rode through a herd of 'um. I wonder if Bambi's mom propositioned him.

I like the one with the Gatling guns mounted.

I'm not riding ahead of you just to clear a path through the deer.   You ain't going to suck me into that mess.

Rats. I mean, Hooved Forest Rats! Oh Deer!  I'll guess I'll just have to keep looking for cow deer catcher elsewhere.

Hey! Let's get Mikey! (J/K MotorMike)

Warning noted. I don't know anything about your Mister Happy and I won't bother to ask.

This ride sounds like it shouldn't be missed after Corner Carver's description of the SD area from his exploits.  This sounds like a job for the CB500X or whatever is it's replacement.

    MH is an inside joke/surprise.

  8. I'm just glad there will be another ride with you Fabulous Folks. I was coerced to wingman my HD riding buddy to Sturgis this past August. It was okay through Custer State Park but the speed limit is low and roads were very crowded. Colorado would have been my choice but being too late to vote I'm with the crowd. It is closer so that will be great.

At 600 miles from Minneapolis it would be a two-day trip for me unless MotorMike is dragging me at a young man's pace. I will still be waiting for this ride With Wild Anticipation.

I'll be bringing Mister Happy with me this time. Y'all have been warned.

I have noticed advertising is vague on power draw on most of these things.  Most advertise the replacement bulb wattage but not what the LED actually draws in comparison.  At least the Phillips bulbs above advertise at 2W, but that is a far cry from 21W stock.  I am hesitant to replace anything with lower power draw since this will tax the R/R to the brink of failure.  I don't know why somebody can't make a super-bright bulb that is the same wattage as stock.  I already installed LED low beams for the purpose of limiting failure rate at expense of more work for the R/R.  I help offset this with radar detector and navigation, but am hesitant to push it more.

When I put in LED headlights on my fifth gen, I was advised that the reduced power draw would add load to the R/R. I already had a VFRness and an upgraded R/R. MellowDude made me a heatsink that mounts between the R/R and the subframe and I've had no problems related to that. Seem to me it must sink a lot of heat. As far as I know he's still at it.

See you in Franklin pal. I can show you there.

  10. I apologize for my late check-in; I made it home at 2am Aug 23 after 5700 mi.

I had a fabulous time with the crew in Nelson even if my dead battery caused me to miss the ride.

My BC tour went to Revelstoke from Nelson (after a four day wait for a new chain and sprockets ) then camped a couple of days in Yoho, a rainy trip to Banff, staying in the Backpackers Inn a couple of days after a very wet night at Two Jack Lake. Then up the Bow River Pkwy, back to Golden and on to Kamloops. Then the best of the trip: BC 12 to Lillooet and then BC 99 south. Stayed in Squamish then an afternoon in downtown Vancouver. Camped my way back to Nelson via CA 1 and BC 3. Main Jet did an oil change and I was on to the border at Eastport.

I was very sad to be leaving BC. Western Montana was great: US2 through Glacier NP and on east. Eastern Mont. and No. Dakota were the longest part of the trip. Brutal, straight-ahead, no scenery and no trees. A strong southerly cross wind made it even tougher.

The trip took it's toll on this oldie; it took me a week to recover.

Right now, I'm planning on making BC a yearly trip. Someone clued me to a first weekend in Aug. mc gathering that he called Sturgis BC. Mc s and music. That alone would be enough but add in the fabulous road, scenery and people and it's a no brainer.

So I will be back. Y'all have been warned.

P.S.1- No forest rat attacks were experience; I had to brake for a black bear and a crew of big horn sheep. Nothing scary. Hoo Ray!

    P.S. 2- Where was Olive???!

  11. I'm finally leaving the Dancing Bear. Headed to Revelstoke and Yoho. I joined Intl. Hostels to do more of these stays.

Full props to Mike and the whole crew for making this such a Fabulous Trip.My happy muscles got quite a workout. Thinking back on the weekend still brings on a feces-eating grin, causing strangers to come up to me and comment that must have just gotten laid.:pinocchio:

I probably won't be making my home safe state for several more weeks. BC and CA are great; it will be hard to leave.

  12. I made it to Nelson about noonish and have a bunk at the Dancing Bear for tonight. Fabulous riding from Missoula  MT on MT200, camped at a beautiful campsite on Bull Lake Tuesday and stayed at Robbinson Lake Campground last night. (No need to go to Coeur d'Alene.)  Made Nelson and checked in to Dancing Bear. Nice place, lousy parking lot - loose gravel.

    See Y'all tomorrow.

The fossils are in a marked protected area, must have a Guide to go in, ya book onto a tour.

They really are something to see, we spent some time in there when we did Mt Stephen (took 2 attempts),(took only Photos).

That was way back, but now there are multiple 24hr Surveillance Cameras broadcasting live to the Field Info Center.

They have Arrested and Charged many for Theft.

    http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/bc/yoho/activ/burgess/visit/stephen.aspx

Was in Field Wednesday, was Trailer Camping/Mt Biking/Hiking in the Banff/Lk Louise area for the week, got outa there before the Long Weekend Insanity.

Its not an easy Hike,,.. Steep for about 45min to an Hour, and can be hard on the knees coming down.

You can climb anything in the Rockies and find Fossils.

But its High Season there now,,.. Traffic is Stupid, compounded by Construction. We'll go back there, but not till September.

I checked the website and there is a two hour geo-talk for $20 that will satisfy my curiosity and fit my timetable. Thanks for the info.

I'm also really looking forward to being back in Banff / Jasper / Yoho.
