So designing boxes is quite easy but attaching them to givi stuff is harder. So after measuring my rack, I hit autocad. And the tool paths I have a baby CNC so cut little and quick-ish... And out Testing it on the rack: Fits really nice! Now to make 3 more! I've no idea how to mount to the givi locking mech, so I was going to use U bolts. They're likely more secure anyway. I took all the givi attachments off the rack and 16mm u- bolt for straight onto it. Now that I had those bolts sticking out, I mounted a load of paper onto them. Taped more paper to it and used a sharpie to mark out areas. Sitting on the pillion seat, I worked out the furthest forward the rack could come and the lowest. It ended up looking like this: So if you're having bespoke panniers made, I recommend 280mm tall by 550mm long maximums. I think 280mm wide is the maximum. But I'm sure people on here have gone wider, I've ordered some nice latches, a metal bender and tin snips. I'm going away next week so this has to be quick and well done! A friend and I keep threatening to get together and buy a SIEG KX3 (which would, sadly, have to reside in my garage), but it's still a big wad of dough. As for the panniers, well, it may make a good project, but one of the benefits of removable luggage is that you can quickly and easily remove it, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't just buy a set of GiVis to go on your GiVi rack. Not to mention the fact that unless you're a proper designer, you might end up with the metal equivalent of Corbin Beetle Bags... The CNC was designed and made by myself and I do class myself as a proper designer.... You can come over, I am trying to sell the machine to fund my travels. The givi stuff isn't really big enough for what I want them for and they're expensive, though I've likely spent not far off. Jcb121 Posted July 17, 2015 Author Share Posted July 17, 2015 So I have some 1.5mm laying about ( would be used for the CNC normally), I decided to have a little practice making a lid. I just need to get hold of my dad's grinder and give it a once over. I'm going to use some ALU brazing sticks for the corners. That took me about 30 minutes to make, using tin snips and a cheap bender. As is, its strong enough to bold my 90kg weight also.
