Hare Vs. Aftershocks

I plan on upgrading my stock shock, probably to Penske (I'll install, but I could use advice on model and settings). While I'm in there, I need some expert advice/upgrade work (probably) on the forks (this work done by shop, not me).

Looking for good shop to buy shock from, and to do fork work. Do Hare and Aftershocks merit equal respect? Coin flip, or preference?

Thanks,

Aram

since most of the members on this board aren't in the SF bay area, i'd be surprised if you get a lot of reasoned opinions.

i've never been to hare - but my understanding is that they're more of an all-around shop. aftershocks specializes in suspensions - so, i'd take it there.

i have a penske in my '99 that i had serviced by phil about 6 months ago. top-notch work...also, he knows penske shocks really well. not everybody does!

if you have other questions, try barf.

Thanks, I forgot about BARF. I'll check in there.

Not to highjack my own thread, but is your Serotta made of steel? Is it as amazing as I have heard? Always wanted on e of those.

Here's a thread on Hare, including my personal experience with them.

Another fella on barf recommended Evolution.

Have heard good and bad about Phil at AfterShocks, mostly very good. The guys at Motostrano also recommend him highly. As Ian2 said, he is the go to guy for Penske apparently.

Ooops for got the first link!

Hispanic Slammer did an excellent write up with pics on installing RaceTech gold valves on a VFR. Search it out.

As far as shocks goes, it seems to be common misnomer that you have to go to a "suspension dealer or specialist" when you order a Penske. You can order a Penske directly from their factory in PA. They have quite a few guys there who do nothing but set-up motorcycle shocks.
