Wrong part for the job

I've actually been trying to figure out how to quiet down my exhaust since I got the bike. I've already repacked the mufflers (they needed it) and wrapped some of the horible PO welding (all straight pipes cut at angles and welded together to make bends under the bike) and it still sounded like it came from a race track. Don't get me wrong, I like me some good exhaust note, but this was so much that I wouldn't ride it across a parking lot withough earplugs. So I'd been thinking, I need something to divert more of the airflow through the packing and less straight through the middle of the muffler. I was thinking of getting one of the guys that I work with to weld a washer on the end of a short section of pipe that would fit inside the muffler but not go past the stop it has in the middle. Then, as I was rooting around looking for some useable section of pipe in my garage, I found it. . .

It was perfect. A bit heavy, and I'd like to put some holes in the side of it (which I probably won't be able to do since it's really sturdy) but it works how I wanted it too.

By the way, the exhaust is still lounder than I want, but it's closer.

I might post some pictures of it when I pull it apart to redo it.
