  1. First ride of 2023 and it was wondrous-clear blue skies, minimal traffic, minimal gravel on the roads, but many trees down from the severe storms of Friday. Had to ride over electric lines a few times. This is a curvy ride about 20 minutes outside Nashville and it's one of my favorite roads anywhere. It was going well until I got behind Grandma in the white SUV. Unfortunately I couldn't safely pass her and missed the mini corkscrew, which is a steep downhill while curving L then R as it ascends another hill-best set of curves on the ride but there's another day. I am amazed at this 25 year old motorcycle and how closely it performs (in some ways better) than when new. GOPR1517.MP4
  2. Chief Joseph Scenic Byway This isn't a great time of year for riding in my neck of the woods so I thought I'd share this short video for the rest of you unable to enjoy getting out for a ride. Hope you like it. Btw, the funky framing is my fault for setting the horizon with the bike on its side stand - d'oh! A month after buying my new-old-stock '09 VFR800 I was winging my way south en route to Laguna Seca. But as usual on my trips I took the shortcut, this time via Yellowstone NP. Day 4 we left Cooke City for a ride over Beartooth Pass, then backtracked so we could ride over Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (Hwy 296) on our way to Cody, Wyo., for breakfast. About 22 km/15 mi east of Cooke City on US212 is the junction with Chief Joseph highway which runs another 74 km/45 mi before terminating at Hwy 120. Cody, Wyo. is a short 25 km/15 mi south. Chief Joseph does't get as much attention as Beartooth Pass, perhaps because it has a more open feel, but the scenery is stunning especially on bright morning like we had. Having ridden it both directions I think the view is better eastbound, but both are equally fun to ride.
  3. ..as in beer. MotoGP.com has started advertising the end of the season as free with registration. Not sure if you get to watch previous races or not, but if you want to see the last couple of races, something to look into.
  4. I'm one of those who uses earplugs every time I ride. I didn't use them as a teenager riding dirt bikes, but I have ever since I started riding on the street. I had an ear infection years ago that caused me to lose some range in my right ear, so I want to preserve what's left as long as possible. Also, I find it more relaxing on long rides to be free of the wind noise and I can still hear bike sounds, cars and other noises without too much difficulty. I've never invested in custom earplugs, preferring to buy the foam ones in bulk. At the moment I'm halfway through a box of 200 pairs of 3M E-A-R plugs that I bought online for a good price. As a certified 'cheap bastige,'™(complete with some Scottish blood) I can sometimes get two or three days out of one pair of disposables before I notice that they aren't expanding as they should, or l lose or drop one. I recently came across a video (below) by E-A-R that shows the proper technique for insertion. I have to admit, for many years I was just cramming them in. Then I learned about rolling them, which helped a lot, then about pulling on the ear to straighten the canal. My take-away from the video is that I should be compressing them even more than I usually do.
  5. I shot this last week from the nose of my VFR800. For local riders, Findlay Rd is easily overlooked where it branches from Miranda Rd near Miranda. The camera is a GoPro-knock off called an SJ4000, I did have some internal sound problems with a button that resonated with engine vibes but I fixed that, so the sound quality is pretty decent aside from wind distortion. If anyone is looking to buy an action cam but can't stretch to a GoPro, I can heartily recommend this one at US$129 delivered. Good battery life and very crisp images.
  6. I recently bought myself an early 50th birthday present in the form of a GoPro copy called an SJ4000 from China. This cost me USD100, delivered, and I am absolutely knocked-out with the quality and battery performance. Here's where I bought it: http://www.foxoffer.com/http://www.foxoffer.com/sj4000-full-hd-waterproof-action-helmet-camera-p-659.html#.VB8-yPmSySo You can read a proper review here:http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2014/2/3/the-sj4000-action-camera-review.html The camera came with a heap of mounts and I did try the suction cup supplied, mounted to the front of the fairing between the screen and the headlights, but this was very bouncy, as the parts are a little small/flexy. So I invested another $65 in a genuine GoPro suction mount which is much more solidly built. The beauty of the SJ4000 is that it uses the same mount configuration as GoPro so they're interchangeable. Here's a short clip on a partly damp gnarly little road near home that I made over the weekend. Ignore the date stamp as I had been messing with the battery and lost the correct date. The file is necessarily compressed so the quality is not that good, but the original is a 1080p image and fabulous to look at as a full screen. Enjoy!
  7. I picked up a Contour Roam for a steal last winter, looking forward to capturing some video of the ride to Colorado, the SumSumx2 and the epic post ride home. I'm quite familiar with editing and such. The unit came with 2 mounts (one fixed & one 180 degr rotating) and I can order more in the future. For now, with less than 3 weeks to the trip, I'm looking for comments on the best place for mounting, on my helmet or on the bike? The Roam has an instant on/off switch easily used with gloves on. This is where I thought mounting on the left side of my helmet would be good for capturing the best moments both straight ahead and those incredible vistas you ride by & think 'I'd like a shot of that'. What I'm concerned about is, if there will be more vibration or shake on the helmet vs being on the bike?
  8. Been recording video on my Polaroid XS100 actioncam I received in Xmas. It is £110 here in the UK.....significantly cheaper than a GoPro or Drift Ghost. I recorded the below video in 960hd. It is 1080HD capable but the files are huge! It also does 720hd at 60fps for some better slow motion work. It comes with mounts such as straps for bicycle helmets, sticky mounts for helmets and a handlebar type mount. I added a suction up mount as well. Waterproof to 10 meters, replaceable front lenses available, anti-shake which works fairly well and auto-rotation for when mounting at an angle. It takes 16mp pics. Video is activated with a slide mechanism similar to the Contour. Overall I'm pleased with it. It is a very nice alternative to the GoPro if you don't want to drop the cash. GoPro is still nice with the remote and 1080hd @ 60fps and all but the price was just a bit too rich for my blood. I edited it in iMovie '09. http://youtu.be/_VBpbTsvthA

  10. FWIW, the February issue of 'Car and Driver' has a review of 4 cameras........... Contour Roam.........Drift HD..........Go Pro Hero2..........and Replay XD1080 Basically, they feel that the GoPro does the best job. YMMV LookingHard
