keny can you possibly re-fit the hinge of the new cap to fit your old ring?
I could but the measurement between the seal area and the lock latch is slightly different on new vs old so will not work.

I’d still check the bolts fit, the one I bought for my 89 didn’t
So all years of RC24(26) has same bolt pattern for the fuel cap? Just looked that according to part number 86, 87 different as 88/89 but those 2 year have same

EDIT: Sorry. Re-read your post and I missed "but fits". Carry on.
On 1/16/2024 at 7:39 PM, Captain 80s said:I should have written looks like it fits,
But you are right, it doesn't fit. The 2 back bolts has a 3mm difference in mounting, to big to drill out plus there is a height difference to. Was the bolling whit idea to take out the pin that holds the cap from the holder ring, but even there is a difference in height between look that slide out and sealing surface. Amen, need to return the fuel cap I bought
But as cap off cleaned the surface inside it, and cap back on.... Tank needs a good deep polish for sure! But looks good inside

A bit of brain storming has made me wounder if I could use the tank breather as drain from tank cap? Would be possible if you modify the cap outer ring by taking off the part between tank as cap that has the rubber, and let cap just breath thro the hole from inside cap outer. Like tank caps before. The system is to not letting out petrol gases in hot weather, but as I live in a not that hot climate should not be a problem. Only problem I see is the breather tube is smaller diameter thro perhaps not a deal breaker as you can see the hole better whit cap open compare to the orginal drain and if the bike stands in rain on side stand the drain will not happen before the bike stand up. Hmmm

The geometry on the RC24 is very much on the stable side so you can get away with a fair bit before it gets "nervous"...but you do then start to run out of ground clearance. Better to raise the rear IMO.
If I recall right I dropped the orginal forks as much I could whit a marginal for flex that the front wheel didn`t hit the engine, and that was 13mm if I recall right, so quit a bit!
But steering was super fast!

I do have to check then! I actually just did put the new on top on the old and did look alike.... 🤞

The reason I change the fuel cap is the old one is hard to open as the key is broken inside the lock
The design is slightly different but fits, need to find a few matching bolts through as different looks
So slow progress but still some

Well, the bike did feel like a good alternative as I inspected it... Didn't have these issues then...oh well.
As I spent a bit more time inspecting the bike, looks like I was wrong that the fluid on front clipper is brake fluid, it's not, it's most likely fork oil!
So this makes I have 3 set of forks that needs to be done 🙈

Well contacted the sell company, a one man company, and he is not willing to whit draw the trade I did as he doesn't have the KLE500 anymore, but offered to pay back the in between money to let me fix it.... Well sure better than non.... But ideal would been to get the KLE trade in value also in cash and let him have the Bandit back..... Oh well....

Well some more recearch done.
The smaller tube it attached to the rubber inside fuel cap and it's the breather pipe,
As blow in the small tube air comes thro.
The bigger tube, after taking the plug out, if you blow into it you hear air comes out inside tank! This should not happen, as fuel cap removed there is a plastic cone in it!
And this is not a OEM part! As you blow in the bigger tube air comes out from hole the cone was in, so it's the drain from fuel cap, but if you put a finger on the hole you just hear air comes out inside tank, so clearly this is a repair to fix a drain tube leaking inside tank, bummer 😞. Well have to see how shop respond to this...
And it's not all! As I happen to look at other brake caliper there is a sign of a leak, no drops on flor yet but fluid in between rubber brake tube and pressed banjo. But no leak as you pull brake lever and put pressure in system, weard!
Starting to think bike might need to go back to shop and money to my account.....

Did feel smell of fuel as I did go down to garage today, sadly the Bandit 600 had started to leak fuel from carbs
Leaking from both connector pipe as one float bowl.
So not that good start whit the Bandit, bummer.
Seems the fuel tap is leaking thro so it needs a rebuild kit, have to see if carbs needs to be taken off to...
As I did take of tank and put it in position it doesn't leak, it didn't go smoothly, the 2 pipes that attached to bottom of tank, one smaller (tank breath pipe) as bigger (drain from fuel cap) the bigger didn't just come along from bike so had to take it off tank, and it was full of water! Well as I later found out, it was plugged!
Mostly I wounder why! Hopefully the pipe inside tank has not a hole.... hopefully just a person that doesn't know what he is doing that been working on the bike, but even that tough is not so nice...
The good thing is that as I bought this in a shop and contacted them and they will pay the fuel tap rebuild kit and if anything more they want to know so promising that way...

Started to think what bikes have I owned the last 10-12 years?
Let's see.....
Well this 5th gen I had for some 4-5 years
Had this 1984 RG250W that I did hit a deer whit
Had this 86 VF500F2 that I imported from Dutch ground whit help of Dutchy!
3 bikes, from right 89 XT600Z Tenere (had 2, other sold in parts), 86 VFR750F and 85 CBX750F ( that I never road actually, lost interest and sold it)
1991 VFR750F, did like it a lot but the engine had a nocking sound on idle like a con rod bearing so did go further
2006 Husky WR250, fun but still have scars from it....had yellow as blue plastic as buoght but changed to more patriotic for me white instead of yellow.
2005 KTM250 rfs as 86 Yamaha IT200S, the later buoght as parts in boxes, later sold as needed money after divorce, bummer as it was nice!
...the KTM was only for a while in my own, buoght to son as he just wanted a 4stroke, oh well here the money shoot of it
Next bike was in house for quite some years
Was my former wife's bike but in my name, fun bike, 87 GSX550ES that's made naked bike. Had plans to put modern wheels from a GS500 on it but never happened....
2010 BMW 1200gs, fun as comfortable but top heavy only had it for a year
2010 SuperTenere 1200, only thing I didn't like was the limited (big time) ground clearance!
2009 XT125X, buoght from a friend as project for son but he never got the license so as it was ready traded it for bike in next picture
90 CBR1000F, most comfortable seat I ever had on a motorcycle! Did fall in trailer during transport as I moved and frame got a dent, did sell it in parts, still have fork and front brake as some bolts around.
84 FJ1100, buoght as project but needed to much so sold as parts
1990 TZR125 I found cheap, but co worker wanted it badly for son so sold it to him whit out even riding it myself
The spare parts Tenere 600
84 KTM125, actually became a runner!
Traded for a 2001 Honda CR125 for son.
That he didn't like so traded for 2steel framed 125 CR, one 97 that was good running and a 95 spare bike
The spare bike was sold to one looking for a 95, as he had one as young, he restored it to like new! Pic of it below
A 1996 cr250r, sold to buy 250 KTM rfs for son, bummer I sold it....
-89 FZR600, never rode it, needed money after divorce
-2005 V-Strom 650, did trade the SuperTenere for 2 bikes, the V-STROM was other, the 95 Africa Twin in first post that both had to be sold because of divorce and money need...
-81 PE175 Suzuki, buoght as project, carb shoot and 2nd gear popped out, just test ridden and traded to a other
-88 Suzuki TS250X,
a bike you just can't get parts for anymore, made a runner and traded whit PE for a other bike (dirt bike)
-81 Yamaha IT465.
Lovely but hard to start. Sold on.
Then the bikes I have already mentioned in this topic at som point.....might be I forgotten a few also!
I did, 1971 Yamaha DT125 buoght cheap and sold on as one offered a nice money for it!

Well I have had 3 RC24, all whit 16/18 wheels, first a 87, next 2 86 Models.
The 87 I did modifications to mostly,
But yes, the geometry got screwed up.
I had a Hagon shock rear whit a stiff spring as back then my former wife did like to join rides as pillion. Singel riding it was a bit to stiff actually but helped whit geometry.
The ZX9R sure has quit a stepper head angle, and it's not much shorter than orginal. Whit a 110/70 tire the steering was a bit better but even the tire is approved on a 3,5 rim I easy used all tread in normal riding, so profile was to flat. Also had a 160/60 rear (18") as the 170/60 did wear out as more available.
Here my 87 whit that ZX9R fork
Side view
But eventually did put stock fork back on.
Did rebuild the forks as brake's, WP springs and 15w oil that made them a bit hash on sharp bumps but handling was good otherwise. Tried a hurricane front wheel whit a 110/70 front tire but it was scary laying down much as the 110/70 needs a 3" rim, 2,5" rim is to slim.
Here on a hurricane front wheel in Germany 2008 whit a 110/70-17, sceary in corners...
Next tried a 110/80 but was not long on the rim, or tire was but changed the front wheel back to orginal 16"
On that black painted orginal wheel I had brake disc's from a NC24 whit semi floating design, looked cool at least
I at times regret selling this 87, I ever had a chance to buy it back but didn't have money just then. Had a 5th gen after this which was a great bike, but needed far higher speed to get same thrills the just little modified RC24 give.
And thing's I then lived whit, like a loud Micron exhaust, now could not 😅
The mirrors on other had I did like a lot!
Here the first 86, just before it did disappear from my garage, I did live in a time when bikes came as did go then... Well perhaps still do but hope to slow down whit that......

"Refurbished a few years back" = "splitting dust seal from corrosion wrapped in electrical tape last century"
Clean the oil pan and apply some baby powder if you're not sure where it's leaking from.
😅 Yes, not a pro fork rebuild
The oil pan is leaking from oil plug

What specifically "didn't work out" to your liking?
Like I did say I really like how fast the handling is whit the 16" wheel, specially as fork's are dropped a bit.
Whit the fork I tried (94 ZX9R) steering was slow, so slow it was scary, it just didn't want to turn. I had a 18" PVM modular rear wheel of a old gsxr rear whit a 170/60 tire and a slightly longer shock, 2 mm longer than orginal Hagon. Even it's spring was on stiff side and no preload steering was really heavy.
So I prefer to not to mess whit the steering again.

Well here some pictures of the things that need attention.
1. Fork seal dust cover
The picture say it all, was wrapped whit electric tape as bike came to me.
Can't believe it was not changed as fork's are refurbished a few years back according to former owner!
2. Leaking oil plug
This is how much it has been leaking since I changed oil after I bought the bike, not huge but still needs sorting
3. Front tire
The tire is not ballad, still soft rubber even DOT15, but has a deep cut over tread that is not a good thing. Fresh one needed.

I would verify the size of that wheel, width and diameter. It might look the part, but it might not be an upgrade.
Well that's a thing I been thinking off, might have most parts to do an convention, but as a former convention on a rc24 I had didn't work out to my liking, I actually turned that bike back to stock in front end. Yes the 37mm fork tubes are flexy, the diagonal tires not as grippy as modern radials, but I go love how fast the steering is whit the 16" wheel, had even the fork tubes lower in the triples to Kake it faster, a friend tough it was on the edge of being nervous! So that's why I'm towards just change the look of front wheel and add a cbr600F matching rear.

Been thinking what all I need to get this project together. I have come to the conclusion that the cbr900 fairing conversation might have to wait until next winter, for several reasons. I want to get all bikes I have as runner's, so my FJ1200 will need some love to, then also I need to find quit a few bits for the mod so need to find them first, and fund to buy them.
But I will try to ride the RC24 as is next summer for sure.
I got the carb float chamber o-rings as rear brake pads, aside that need to sort the oil leak from drain plug, leaking even new cupper washer... Then it needs a fresh front tire, and then I start to think if I would need to get a NC24 front rim same time so I don't need to change it later to other rim.
Would sure be nice.
And one more thing, the other fors dust seal is in need of change for sure! A picture of that later.....

Sadly no progress on the motorbike side, but did get myself a other 2 wheel project/puzzle
A trail hardtail mountain bike frame whit fork as a few bits. That on Saturday morning...
But then did Covid strike so been keeping low profile. On way better through

So what to do on Christmas evenings morning as all else asleep?
Rebuild clutch as brake master cylinder for the FJ1200.
I had a TourMax kit for the clutch as a AllBalls for the brake. Both kits had all needed but where still slightly different,
The TourMax kit came whit a new piston aside the seals and other small stuff needed but not whit new screw's for cap.
The AllBalls kit didn't come whit new position (old was ok so no problem) but all other stuff as new screw's for the cap as cupper washers for brake line! That was not included in the clutch kit by TourMax for clutch.

Inspected the cut in current front tire, looks like a act of destruction, it's sure deep so no chance I want to ride whit it, a new one needed even there price are almost crazy today......
