  1. Iirc, CBR-XX bars are also 43mm but quite a bit lower than those from the VTec VFR. The indexing might be different but otherwise they ought to fit.

Thanks for that knowledge Lorne...I will see if they work if we prove the CBR600F clip on are too low to work with the 6G plastics....

I have stock 5th gen clip ons laying in the garage, since I replaced them with an LSL superbike bar.

No grips or throttle tube or anything. Don't know if they would work for you, but if so PM me.

Thanks for the offer Lee. Unfortunately those are 41mm and we are using 6G suspension on this project which is 43mm...

  2. If you just want a set for the class I can bring my Heli's Sunday and you can use them for the class and bring them back to me at Tmac.

David that is a very generous offer. Thank you!

If he ends up going with Helibars it will probably CBR600F4 helis as he does not want to raise the bar height, he is young and wants to keep the forward controls. Perhaps the CBR helis would not be mush higher than standard but right now he would love to find a set of stock VFR 6G clip ons. we just haven't been able to and are now expanding our search to other 43mm bars.

  3. I just ordered a set of F4i clip ons from fleabay...I was hoping to find out from someone who tried them whether or not they would clear the 6G fairing before spending money but we are running out of time.

MiniCarver has been taking some pics and he will start a thread in the next couple of weeks to document the build up. We stumbled onto a couple of (we think) new discoveries regarding this swap.

The only guy that has successfully performed this that we are aware of was in England and he had to cut the rear cam cover and re-weld it to clear the rear frame section so we have clarified how to proceed with that. Still working out the wiring harness issues and the conversion from 4 coils to COPs. The ECU (and the work around for the Vtec activation solenoid) have yet to be proven in a riding environment but the bike starts and runs on the lift in the garage.

Once we have some clip ons we will post videos this week of it cruising in the cul de sac...

  4. Is he afraid of being too comfortable on the VFR? Take my word for it. Do not change the bars before a track school event. Just another variable to overcome in getting a natural feel for the bike. Beyond that the brake and clutch hoses tend to fowl the triple bridge. I modified the tang that the banjo fitting rest against to adjust the levers to a more natural sporting position. I dremeled most of it off. If it's a track project bike put a set of stomp grip pads on the tank. You'll love it under hard braking and hanging off.

We don't have any bars for the bike...have spent the winter building the project from the incident that earned a Green Jersey for his friend at TexasMac last year...

Completely agree with stomp grip, love it on the other bikes...

  5. With only a month to go before our Lee Parks class in Nashville we are desperately trying to get the last details of MiniCarver's 6g/5G VFR completed.

We have been trying to locate a set of stock clip-ons and cannot. He does not want to go with Helibars (which cost about the same as stock new).

Do any of you guys have experience with other 43mm clip-ons that will not foul on the 6G bodywork? We are thinking standard Honda (for ease of finding a used source-his crappy paycheck from BestBuy doesn't go very far :goofy: ) or perhaps Ducati 748?

Any non-VFR, 43mm, stock bars that have been used on a 6G?

Assistance rendered will be greatly appreciated and perhaps even result in the consumption of an adult beverage in gratitude.

  6. The more I think about this, the more I am leaning towards the acrylic extender/signals I saw on here a while back.

last year I managed to get a pair

    .

Of what? The mirror extender blocks or the GSXR mirror adapters?

I have the extender blocks (came with my bike) but I have never used them.

As far as that acrylic block, I've used that stuff in the past. One tip I remember is that when you cut it, it's white, but you can take a propane torch and lightly pass it over the cut part to turn it clear as well.

I think I am gonna buy the block of acrylic and cut some out. Will see how it goes if ok I will sale some at cost ..

If you go this route, think about a 2" thick acrylic sheet and after making a single rough of the correct shape, have it cut at an angle 1/2" thick on one end and 1-1/2" thick on the other so that you can drill the mounting holes for the blocks to form a wedge 1/2' thick towards the rider and 1-1/2" thick toward the headlight for the signal light....just a thought that I have had for 6 years since I got my Lobster mounts/extenders.

  7. My GSXR mirrors arrived today. I did little tear down in the kitchen while Mrs. Carver was making Mexican roll your own style burritos and I think I can do with these what I thought I could.

Pics and a write will have to wait until I get home Saturday...heading out for the next couple of days in the morning.

  8. Personally I don't need/want an extender block. But at least there seems to be some additional traction/interest with this.

Maybe. I just bought a set of Suzuki (real) GSXR mirrors yesterday...shipping from Cali they should be here this month.

Yep. I have a set of the Suzuki mirrors as well.

I pull them out often, hold them up to the VTEC, sigh loudly, think about how to mount them, then put them away again.

I'll take some pics for you even if it doesn't work to let you know my thoughts.

  9. ^^ Yes but...all you really need unless you are de-linking your brakes is the internal parts and the caps so I have purchased bent F3 forks several times over the years and kept my VFR lowers and upper tubes.

That is good price if you need forks and triples for an F3 but you are buying a bunch of stuff you don't need.

  10. $170, I wont have external rebound adjustment on caps, one size fits all, which was my concern. $500 hel SS brake lines are on the way, so want to make sure any more $ are well spent. Thx

Find a set of used CBR F4i forks .. oops 99 41mm tubes no workie ..

Late model CBR600F3 forks are what you are looking for. then you will have the external adjustment for rebound as well as compression...I feel it is money well spent.

  11. I've spent hours researching offsets and trail numbers and reading Race Tech's Motorcycle Suspension Bible. The data shows most of the best handling bikes have around a 30mm offset with high 90s to low 100s trail values (CBRs, GSXRs, R1s... early R1s and RC51s are exceptions) and rakes of 23* to 24*; this was also confirmed by a reliable suspension expert.

The stock 5th gen VFR chassis geometry doesn't cut it for this application... and it wasn't designed too. No fault, no grandiose claims that I can engineer better than Honda. Just me attacking a challenge to take something I love and adapt it to a new, more specific application.

Based on this, and some more expert input, I'm going to shoot for an initial set-up of 30mm offset, around 102mm trail, and ~24* rake on my 5th gen track bike. My '09 ZX14 50/54 USD forks are scheduled for delivery tomorrow... so I can start the measuring and wrenching and stop the jabbering!!! Build thread to follow...

To modify your rake to work within the design parameters of above mentioned GSXR/CBR are you going to cut your headstock from the frame and weld it back at that desired 24* angle?

If not, perhaps an eccentric in the steering stem mount will allow for enough rake correction.

  12. Well, you either have to adapt the wheels/rotors/calipers to the VFR spacing, or just change the location of the bores when you are machining. If you are manually machining it, it is a slight nuisiance since you have to keep the wall around the forks consistent for all spacing values. But the other way you have to space rotors differently and adjust wheel spacers.

Do we have an option where we can get triples manually machined to order at a poor man shade tree mechanic price?

I'd love to get a set of triples with the VFR offset and matched to my donor parts so I don't have to shim...

Can the steering stem be pressed out of a VFR or 929 triple and pressed into a different lower triple without damaging? Could a VFR steering stem be pressed into the IMA lower triple to get the correct length?

I quoted 5 shops for a set or two of manually machined triples before I purchased those Italian Jobs...they ranged in price from $1,475 to $2,300 per set and that was three years ago...
