  1. Oh yeah. A honda auto filter works great on the VFR. every honda after 1989 uses the same filter. It is a little longer, so a little more capacity which is always good. It's half the price of a cycle specific filter.

    If you want exact the honda hybrid oil filters are identical to the cycle filters. Only blue instead of black.

  2. As yall saw at t-mac, I can take the fairings off in seconds. The clips are so simple. I think many just dont understand how they work exactly and they do wear out.

    I think not taking the left fairing is lazy, no offense BR.

    I think the fairing should be taked off to ck. the radiator reserve and I also ck. the blue connector, all connectors, and bolts while I am there.

    It can be done easily, especially if you have removed the evap canister.

  3. Haha... I'm not brave enough for this one.

    I got a bag of 100 little clips and have the fairing-removal exercise down to about 5 minutes... That's my technique. :biggrin:

    Same here. Also the rad reserve can be checked. I have had the fairings off so many times it takes less than 5 minutes for both sides. The oil is meant to drain on the kickstand and then I put it on the c-stand. I also warm the engine up to 150F.

    Where did you get a bag of 100 clips.

  4. I have added even more stuff. Everything for the plug kit, the compressor and misc. items will fit in the little cubby hole. It's amazing what will go in there if done right. I still havent had any heat issues other than the oiginal pair of hot latex gloves.

    It' simple to make and you could put tools, or whatever in the there. It keeps a lot of stuff out of my tank bag. I could fabricate some nice ones and sell if people wanted, It works awesome. Pump is at least 2 years old if not 3 and still works. It stays dry in there.

    I guess you could put a speedoheler and a power commander in there. Adding the frt. piece makes it weather resistant. A little dirt, a little heat, thats it.

  5. Good write-up, but when I fried my 30 amp connector I fixed all charging woes by going with a VFRness from Tightwad, which is an excellent product at an excellent price, an easy install and doesn't have me munching-up and soldering wires.

    Yep, I got 3 harnessess from honda for the re-call. I then added tightwads plug and play, fantastic VFRness. Rock solid now.

  6. I was wondering about the difference in the two headlight mod harnesses on the 6th gen bikes. The $15 one gives you 6 filaments on high beam and the $20 one still only has 4 on high beam correct? I want to order a few things, but want to make sure that I get the right one. I'm wanting to have as much light as possible so I think the 6 filament harness at the top of the page would be my best bet. Can someione confirm this. I would reference part numbers so as to not be confusing, but I didn't see any on the website.

    Did that make sense?

  7. The Air Guide as you call it is also called a shark fin or chain fin; it is there to keep things like your foot from getting caught up in between the chain and sprocket. A friend of mine had a get off at a track day and his foot ended up being mangled because he didn't have such a fin; he recovered after several surgery's and a lot of rehab but he now has a fin on his track bike now

    I agree 100%. I have aked sveral old racers and they all said the same thing. They tired of getting tore up from body parts going thru the chain, sprockets.

    It's not like a car at all.

    You can get great deals at insurance auctions because of totaled bike with hardly any damage. I have a friend who got a 636 because of a dent in the frame the size of a pencil eraser, thats it.

    Like I said, I learned a lot here. You never realize the amount of damage that could be caused just by a slight drop.

    I had little confidence in non drillings till I was pointed to Oggy knobs.

    EDIT: Had to re-read something.. can you explain to me the whole "Frame is scratched" is totaling the bike? Sorry if this is getting side tracked.

    I am not familiar with the oggy knobs. Are these the ones that bolt over the radiator? I will do a search. If so memebers say they can crush and ruin the radiator, and dont really protect the fairings.. I have seen the rad busted and the fairing damaged from a very slow speed drop, not even a crash, from these types. As stated I am not sure of the oggy knobs. I will look into it.

    EDIT OK, I looked them up. Those are the best no cuts I have ever seen. I dont like the way the bracket goes over the edge of the radiator but they look pretty stout. They would probably be fine in just a no speed drop. I see they are australlian. What is the cost to get them to the US? Any USA suppliers.

    Yeah it's really stupid about bike frames. According to insurance companies if the frame has any damage at all, a tiny dent, scratch whatever, it is considered structural damage and the frame compromised. You can imagine what it would cost to replace a frame. Just the cost of labor would be too much. I dont agree with it, nor would 99% of riders but thats what they do. I'm not an insurance man, just a honda technician. I speak of my experiences. I am sure others have difirent stories.

    I filed a claim on my bike and the insurance adjuster said it was totaled. The bike ran, and rides perfect. It had one very small scratch on the frame. I got a good adjuster and he overlooked it for me because I told him I absolutly didnt want to total the bike. My bike had 40k miles at the time. The adjuster said most bikes are totaled by 2k miles. My bike was considered totaled and all it had was rashed fairings, a dented radiator and a tiny scratch on the frame.

    Be careful if you ever have to file a claim. Sometimes it's a lot easier to just fix it yourself.

  9. I was under the impression that the frame was on the inside of the fairing. Guess my bike was made different.

    I also learned that a dented gas tank totals a bike. I thought total meant total loss.

    Guess I have a lot to learn about bikes. :cool:

    When you tip over, the fairing stay will bend, and the fairing will crush the fuel tank, radiator, and the frame itself. My bike was totaled for this exact reason, when the fairing scratched the frame.

  10. There are no cut sliders but they suck.

    Frame sliders protect the frame. It's a common misconception that they protect the fairings or other parts. They are meant to keep from totaling the bike from frame damage.

    Right next to the "Bashing NON drilling sliders based on you don't cut the fairing is getting old" smilie.

    Although rather new to street riding, I have yet to see any type of fast crash or accident IRL or on Youtube where just because you drilled your fairing and mounted a "R E A L" slider, you just saved your bike.

    Give me a break.

    Most of us get the NON drill types for tip overs. I bought Oggy Knobs. Don't have them installed yet and were kind of pricey but they will do what I want them to do. I have no doubt about it.

    There is an even BIGGER misconception that they only protect the frame. I guess my bike tipping over or someone doing stunts at 5 MPH and their bike tips over is going to total their bike? They are meant to do a number of things... not just protect the frame. You don't have to be a 40 year vet of street riding or a 5 year vet of these forums to know that.

    /rant off Now back to your topic.

    What do you want them to do? Tip over protection like I wanted them for? There is a few out there that have a bracket mounted behind the fairing and then the slider mounts to that. I bought Oggy Knobs and will install them when I get home. Don't have all the info as I am still at work and they are a tad pricey but I got them on a deal. Search has a couple great threads on them. If I remember when I get home from work, I think I have them in my favorites.

    No slider of any type will protect the bike in every situation. The very best sliders are hardbags anyway.

    I know folks who think there bike will be fine in any tip or crash just because they have sliders.

    THEY ARE CALLED FRAME SLIDERS, NOT FAIRING PROTECTORS.

    Frame sliders can also dig in and cause a bike to start flipping in self destruct mode.

    I absolutly never said that a real slider will save a bike.

    I've seen the bobbins or whatever you want to call them smash radiators and bust fairings.

    None are perfect. No cuts may work in one situation and not another and vice versa.

    And yes a 5mph crash can total your bike. Dent in the tank, busted radiator, busted fairing's, dented wheel, guess what it's totaled.

  11. OOPs, I ddnt even think of the abs being diffirent, sorry. I will alter the title.

    It really is a good storage area. It seems to stay realatively dry and clean. I have had the pump there for over a year. I pull everything out every couple months and the pump still works great and nothing has melted even in 100F NC summers.

    I did have a set of latex gloves stick together but they werent melted or burned.

    You could also put 2 chickens or a pound of the finer columbian back there. What ever suits your fancy, +1.gif

    Just a reminder boys and girls...make sure anything stored there can take the HEAT... +1.gif

    The only problem that I have had with heat was some latex gloves stuck together. I imagine it does get pretty hot there.
