  1. I think I may have stumbled on a solution to the 65k Gates wants for a custom mold. You need to think globally here. Produce all the engineer drawings needed for machining the parts. include the design for molded polycarbonate 166t belt. Slap some fake U.S. Paten numbers on them and leak them to the Chinese. Then you just purchase the whole kit on E-bay in a few months for $200 ready to fit your bike. :)

That, sir, is ingenious... And very plausible.

  2. Cool. Thanks for the tip.

I'd like to see the Vitus when you are done too. My first decent road bike was a used Vitus 979. It was white and damn clean. It little whippy but a nice ride and a light bike. I still have a 25.0 Campy post laying around for it that replaced it was dug into but that kooky Vitus seatpost binder. I've had a lot of nice bikes since then, a couple of Serottas a couple of Fausto Coppis and now a Klein and a Merlin. I wish that I still had all of them... Including the Vitus.

  3. To look right you have to find a way to move the coolant bottles and radiators. They just don't look right on the side of the bike. Even though I'm not a fan of flames the black '87 does look pretty hot.

  4. It sounds like you got the absolute minimum injury possible from a crash that nasty. Hopefully some people will read this post and double check some of their mods for potential safety issues. Who knows, you may have saved a life with this post.

    Feel better soon.

  5. I've been riding VFRs since they were VFRs. '86. I love the power qualities, sound, handling, comfort and style. I have been frustrated by the lack of out right horsepower when trying to safely pass slower riders on faster bikes who redline it in the straights while parking it in turns. This is exactly the kind of power I've dreamed of. I'll start the rationalization process now in the hopes i can over come the sticker shock.

It will also give those guys a real case of "WTF was that?"

  6. I'm considering starting a "What bike will you trade for my clean, never down, stock 5th gen?" thread.

    I will consider:

    F800S- yellow/orange

    05 Superhawk- Charcoal

03 VFR- Silver with black wheels

    04 VFR- Asphalt

Okay, come on guys... They aren't making these 5th gens anymore. Get yours now before they are the most coveted motorcycles in the world and I up my trade offer to a late model K1200 or an 848. :491:

  7. Toro, can't I just buy your bike? Tangelo Pearl and supercharged... Wow! Your website and Quicktime vid are well done. Not a bunch of unnecessary Flash crap and clean, pro video production (just next time ditch the New Balance and wear some nice Sidi boots on the Dyno).

Okay, I expect some of you guys to step up and buy this sucker. So many of you have said that the 5th gen is the perfect bike but it just needs more power. Many others have said, "Where's the 7th gen with 1000cc's?" Well this will eat up any 7th gen that Honda will (probably not) produce. Can't find a nice 5th gen? I'll sell you my perfect stock '01 for $6K ; )

Really, live the dream, step up and buy this.

Why do I care? Well, I think that Toro should be rewarded for doing something great and doing it well. Also, I would love to see VFRs get even more cred!

  8. Okay, here are some pics taken outdoors with my digital camera. Although I think they came out good, if I could do it over again, I'd use medium and fine sandpaper not heavy, medium, and fine.

    Looks good!

(BTW- you guys and your perfectly clean chains make me sick!)

  9. I was wondering if I could use the stock light but I opted for the bolts.

On my 2000 I cut off everything except just enough to mount the plate, then cut a small window box(or drill holes) in the underside of the tail light to allow enough of light to hit the tag and be legal. Then glued or silicon a clear piece of plastic over the hole! :fing02:

The lights (tail/brake) are already there you just need to let some clear light hit the plate.

Sweet idea BR. And as an added safety your tag gets bright under braking too. :fing02:

  10. I was wondering if I could use the stock light but I opted for the bolts. Of course I didn't have any small connectors around when we did the job so I need to put them in if I want to change the tag.

Wow, that was one twisted rear. Glad that your bike has been updated.

  11. I decided that I just couldn't take the long rear fender on my 5th gen but I didn't want to risk a ticket or look like a squid by taking the whole fender off and jamming the plate up and over the back wheel.

The solution: On ebay I got some little LED lights, that are also bolts to retain the license plate (about $20US) and then with the help of my OCD friend (actually he did pretty much everything) did the chop.

We sketched out the the part of the plate that we wanted to cut with a silver Sharpie, used a Dremel to do the cutting, sanded the rough edges and soldered the new lights on. It looks good, is legal and completed in an hour.

Now, I just have to clean my dirty chain and wheels!

  12. I've been a bicycle racer for a long time (and I'm sitting here in one of my team uniforms as I write this) and I have never thought about wearing my shorts on the VFR. I might have to check that out if I ever do more than 200 miles in a day. That said my bike jerseys would make a great base layer but they are covered with sponsor logos so it might look pretty silly when I stop for lunch.
