  1. Someday, hopefully, I'll get around to doing the single-nut hub mod, so I can slap on a rear mag wheel to match the Marchesini mag front I have on there now. It's incredible how much turn-in and steering effort are improved by slapping on a lighter hoop, so if I can remove even more rotating weight from the rear (combined with suspension mods), this bike will be an absolute dream to ride.

PS -- the linked picture was taken moments after I got the bike together, so please refrain from the usual poultry-related comments... :D

Grrrrr, get back to work on that supercharger dammit!! :goofy:

  2. Here's the thing, I've noticed several 5th/6th gen wheels that DO have this relief already in the casting! Not sure which gen it is, but I've seen them.

I've got two 6gen wheels sitting in the garage right now and both have a flush casting with no relief hole for the brake rotor bolts. Now they do have large recess holes between the lug bolt areas but those are simply for weight reduction and are inside the circumference zone of the interference. Maybe that is whay you have seen? :pissed:

Yeah I know, a pic right here would really be nice for explanation.

    Yep, pics would rule.

So, those relief areas are not big enough to accept the 4th gen bolts?? I would just need to have the little are on the inside ground off?? Thanls for taking a look for me!

  3. I like the look of the 6th gen rear wheel. I'd like to do that, only silver and black! Anybody know off hand if it will bolt to a 4th gen (I know, use the search)?

Sort of. The 5th/6th Gen uses recessed bolts to hold the rear brake rotor on, the earlier Gens do not. So when Honda designed the 5th/6th Gen rear wheel they used a flat face between the lug holes.

You need to either relieve this area (in the four sections where the rotor bolts hit it) using a diegrinder or Dremel, or fit countersunk rotor bolts. Both relatively easy mods, the one you choose depends on your resources I suppose.

    Thanks for the reply!

Here's the thing, I've noticed several 5th/6th gen wheels that DO have this relief already in the casting! Not sure which gen it is, but I've seen them. I've seen ones with the solid metal between lugs, as well as ones with the hollow area. Anybody know which years have the hollow ones????

I just got a new front Power on, and while picking it up I almost walked out with some dudes rear wheel, as I guess some vifferisti had a rear wheel there. I noticed this wheel was either 5th or 6th gen, and it appeared it would bolt right on?? Doesn't seem like there would be any clearance issues. I like the 5" fine, it's actually a bit lighter, but I would sure like to be able to stick a 180 on my bike, and I like the squared off look of the newer wheel.

  4. Don't go there, Brown. I am a HUGE 49er fan. All the way back to John Brodie and Joe Montana and Jerry Rice and

Thanks for the nice words, again, Brown. Wish I still lived in NorCal. You'd be a riding buddy for sure.

    Fred

Hehe, cool. Battle of the Bay! I'll go ahead and give you this: Montana was the greatest QB ever, hands down. Jerry was the greatest WR ever! Now, who says Raider fans are unreasonable?

That said, my favorite QB is Stabler. My fav WR is of course, is Touchdown Timmy Brown #81 !!

We're lucky to have two great football AND baseball teams here!

If you ever get back to the area, we'll go for a ride down Mines Rd.

  5. Thanks for the kind words. It briefly occurred to me to do in in silver & black. But that's the Raiders' colors. And I can't stand the Raiders. It would probably look outstanding, but the thought of it sickened me.

Grrrr. :goofy: You should painted the exposed area gold, then you could be a Sporty Winer, oops I mean Forty Niner fan!! Hehe.

Poor taste in football aside, I like the look, good job!!

I like the look of the 6th gen rear wheel. I'd like to do that, only silver and black! Anybody know off hand if it will bolt to a 4th gen (I know, use the search)? I'd rather have a 180 rear, as it's easier to find tires, too. Should be millions around, since everyone seems to trade to the 8-spoker....

  6. Dave,

As long as you're honest about your riding style and weight, the 640 (no remote res.) is probably a great shock, too. You will be sure it's sprung for your weight, and the valving will be set up for the spring rate and your riding style. That may be all we were missing all this time, plus the fact that our shocks were probably sacked out. For all I know, I may not have to mess with the compression settings. If you skip the remote preload, the install should not be that hard. I think the toughest part for me was dealing with the hoses and the damn things hanging from them. With the "practice" I have now, I think it would be a 2-hour job to install the 640. You may still lose a knuckle or two, though.

I think I will end up trying the 640.

  7. Dave,

I've managed to sneak maybe 50 miles since I originally mounted the shock, and the difference was amazing. But, like Dutchy said, it could be my imagination. The bike does seem a lot lighter on it's feet, and it turns much easier. I can feel the bumps in the road surface, but the shock soaks them up and maintains control. It's still less jarring then the stocker. I have yet to do my normal 3-hour loop. Testing on frost-heaved pavement has been good, though.

Cool, sounds like both of you and Dutchy are liking the shock so far!

Sheesh, after reading this thread, I am thinking I'll just get the cheapo shock without the remotes! Then, I'll just take it to Evolution or some place like that and have them help me set it up. I don't take pillions very often if I can avoid it, and rarely any luggage.

  8. Crap.

Cowboy up Tokkie! We've all been irresponsible and made mistakes while riding. Some of us get lucky and make it home with the bike. Some of us do not. As others have noted, at least you are ok.

Such a bummer to see so much hard work get thrashed!! Just a total bummer. Good luck with whatever bike you get into!!!!
