  1. I guess I'll be a little more direct in my question. What change in your weight do you feel makes it time for a spring rate change? Like I said before, I've dropped 40 lbs over a period of about a year. Can't believe the difference it made in my riding. Having had the Penske built for my previous "bulkier" size, is it time to consider going to a lighter shock spring? What are the increments between shock springs? 50#? 100#? I did crank in two more clicks on the rebound and took one click off the compression on the last ride and that helped a bit.

    Pete,

40# is a big change IMO, that's like an 18% change. Congrats! Do you know springs are on the bike now?

I would still think you would be in the .95-1.0 kg fronts & 20-21 kg rear springs at 250. The Penske valving should have no problem covering a spring change within it's adjustments.

  2. Boy was I wrong on my theory related to rear spring rate.

I had Phil at Aftershocks re-valve and re-spring my Vtec forks last summer and while I felt an improvement with the forks I wasn't happy with the bikes handling.

I installed a CBR Ohlins on the rear at the same time as the redone forks, but I did not increase the spring rate for fear of a horrendous ride and I thought that if I could get the proper SAG with the stock rate spring than everything was cool. As mentioned I wasn't really impressed with the set-up and was considering another complete front end swap to a F4i, but after another conversation with Phil I was convinced to try a heaver rear spring rate first in order to bring the bikes balance back closer to what Honda originally had.

Phil installed .95 kg forks spring and recommended 19 kg rear spring to maintain balance, so I ordered a 19 kg from Ohlins.

Today was my first ride with the new spring set-up and I haven't even set proper SAG or dialed in the shock yet.

Results, This thing is on Rails ! Turns in better, holds a line better, does everything better. It has transformed the bike completely and I can only imagine how it will feel after I set Sag and spend a day on Comp. & Rebound settings.

    Amazing !

straight numbers are 30% stiffer on the front springs (.74 to .95) Rear spring in now 25% stiffer (15.5 kg to 19.3 kg)

re-posting for some of the guys doing forks now and added this:

Don't forget that with all this Forking around you guys are doing to the front that you need to consider increasing the rear spring rate to better maintain the bikes balance and get better performance from your forks too.

I first did the forks with valving & .95's and I installed an Ohlins on the rear with a stock rate spring, though it was an improvement it wasn't right.

When I finally installed the proper rear spring on the rear (19kg for my 200 lbs) it transformed both ends of the bike!!! fing02.gif

Turns out running a soft/stock rear spring with new stiffer screwed up feel on both ends because the stiff front transfered more weight to the already to soft rear making it feel worse and the stiffer front tended to bounce across many bumps and irregular surfaces instead of absorbing them.

I had a old post about it " transformed" don't know if it's still around, but consider stiffening the rear spring in close to the same percentage as the front and you'll be much happier.

(note if you just commute and don't hit the twisties you may never notice it) cool.gif

  3. I have finalized the fix, and updated the VFRness to cover those who's bikes don't have a switched wire. Incidentally, that seems to be anyone without ABS....that was the only common denominator I found among those who responded.

    Here is the wire used:

I hate to use this type of connector on any real elec. need, got something better? I've had this type Fail many many times! :goofy:

  4. Greetings. I've been lurking here for several years. Picking up tips and advice on the numerous problems that came along with my '02 VFR. I've become more familiar with electrical systems than I ever thought possible. Thanks for all the help.

Now though, I have something to add to the mix. Good news in fact.

I just got off the phone with my Honda service manager. He informed me that Honda has just issued a "stop selling" order on VFRs and that a recall for the electrical problems is immanent. He didn't have any details on what the recall will replace. He just was informed it was coming. So, after years of -investigating-, we may have a real solution soon.

    Keep your fingers crossed.

    Cheers

Yes, it's here. See "recall" post from 8-31-07.

  5. Check it out...

Cool Will, when did you get the Wing?

Just don't get over confident with having Radar. There's many situations where it won't help, but there are worth every penny because it will save you from getting at least 50% more tickets.

I've been using a V-1 for over 5 years and it has saved me many times, but find it mostly worthless for Laser and Instant-On radar. There not full proof, but I hope never to be without one!

  6. so far I gathered from this is that and F4i shock conversion is easier than a 929 shock conversion, and the benefits are similiar. Right?

On the issue of spring, could we fit the original 5th gen spring into the F4i shock?

This is a Vtec shock option, IMO the 929 shock is the best swap for the 5th gen and has the same spring rate as the VFR.

btw the vfr spring will not work on either the F4i or 929 shock.

also the cbr 1100xx shock runs a stiffer spring( I think a 17 kg) and with bolt into either, but if I'm not mistaken it's like 1/4" shorter than a 5th gen and 1/4" longer than a 6th gen. and only has the same adjustments as the stock VFR shock.

  7. can someone measure their fork tube where it clamps to the lower triple and tell me the OD of the fork tube? im hoping its 56mm.

ive got a set of YZF750 forks and it would be nice to be able to use them.

Measurement from what? No upper or lower triple tree from any VFR will work with any USD forks.

NO VFR will have 56mm, most are 41mm to 2002 when they went to 43mm.

  8. I wanted to show this posting to a guy at work, only to discover much of it got lost in translation when HS did the recent upgrade. It now is reasonably close to the original, with most of the same pics.

Perhaps the Mods will "pin it" again...

    Done pinned!

  9. I have a 2004 and neither the 929 nor the 954 shock will fit either way( facing left or right) and keep the same ride height. I made a spacer the length of the difference between the stock shock and the 954/929, well the res on the 954 hits the engine, and the 929 hits a hard line ( hydralic probably). So now I have to buy a longer bolt and make a longer spacer. This however will change my ride geometry and change the handling of the bike. Something I wish I didn't have to do. Anyhow, anyone have any other suggestions ( rather than buying a $1000 shock).

Check here, he installed a 929/954 shock on a Vtec!

  10. I am looking to do the 929 shock upgrade to my 5th gen soon. Is there a particular model year 929 shock needed. I was also wondering if pre-load adjustments are still easy, as they are w/ the 5th stocker? Would it be worthwhile to have it revalved/rebuilt before installing. My guess is its easy enough to remove and have re-worked if it turns out the one I get from fleabay is worn out.

The 929's were only made in 00-01 models and standard one's had a yellow spring and Erion models had white springs. Stock they have the SAME spring rate as the VFR so other than spacing it's a straight bolt in w/o mods. Most people want/need a heavier spring on the VFR so that would also apply to the CBR shock on the VFR, but you can sure run it untill you plan to upgrade the rest of the suspension w/o issue!

Someone here did use a 954 shock too if I'm not mistaken, but the 929 is the easiest mod for the 5th gen.

    Also look here.

  11. Hi folks,

Here's the latest great place to buy discounted Honda parts! 10/10

I recently purchased a new '07 VFR from a Honda dealership in Mason City, Iowa. While I was picking the bike up, I talked to the parts manager about the possibility of offering VFRD a discount to its members for Honda parts. He offered 15% over cost on Honda parts for any VFRD members.

To take advantage of this opportunity please call Mason City Honda at (641) 422-0000 and ask for Keith, the parts manager. When talking to him, mention that you are a member of VFRDdiscussion and ask for the discount. Please have parts number ready when ordering it can save a lot of time. A parts fiche is available on their website:

    http://www.masoncityhonda.com/

They were exceptional to deal when purchasing my bike and would deal with them again in the future. Give Keith a call see what he can do for you.

Please post up how they compare to other places and your experiences if you order from them. Thanks and enjoy the new discount.

  12. Oh, by the way service honda had the 98-99 headers for $392.00 plus shipping. Didn't some one say that two brothers had a custom titanium exhaust? I bet that is expensive.

That is only for one piece, you need two more plus, all the clamps and bolts(all different sizes) I think it comes out to $500 plus pretty easy. :idea3:

TwoBros stopped making VFR headers many years ago. sad.gif
