  1. We're into the final week. Glad to see everyone is finding their way to the meet and finding groups to ride with. The itinerary is in the first post for meals and meeting times. We'll have some 'pops' and junk food on the patio for everyone whenever you arrive. I should be there around 2pm (early) just in case. If anyone gets stuck or needs any help please feel free to e-mail me (superfunkomatic(at)gmail.com) or text message me at (403)xxx(874)xxx(9254). My family is driving the car out so we could do emergency service if needed.

Have a safe trip, y'all. See ya on Friday!

I would LOVE to go to a ghost town!!!

Maybe that can be one of the group rides. Still get to ride the Kaslo to New Denver stretch and it's only 12 km off the highway on a flat gravel road - easy peasy on a VFR if you take your time.

    Dual Sport Riding

I'd love to do the Idaho Peak part (another 12 km) - couldn't manage it on the Varadero (too bumpy, bike too big, rider not skilled enough). There is also Buchanan Lookout which is a two-track (12km) journey to a fire lookout over the whole valley near Kaslo.

I will have a new riding 'tool' when I arrive. Alas, it is not the Africa Twin - still none available. But my new 'tool' might be better suited to these offroad treks. ;)

  3. All venues for meals are confirmed.

Check the original post for details.

Mike's pub on night one - specials on Sierra Nevada beer (California beer? Weird!)

Breakfast buffet at Hume Hotel - morning two (9:00am). Good deal - $15 per person includes coffee, tea, juice and hash browns, eggs, sausage, bacon and fruit. Plus they are booking a private 'grande' room, which is really quite cool.

Lunch on on the road with your roving gang of bikers.

Dinner at at the Royal Grill. Food is covered by your prepayment. The food is really good. Wide menu of choices. Drinks are on y'all. Oh and I checked out the musician. He's good and plays a good mix of old time country, adult pop, rock and folk. For those who were here in 2008 - he's no Amazing McRory (which is good - haha).

    Should be fun!

  4. Popping out to Nelson on Monday and Tuesday for the final details and organization, oh, and for a ride! Looking forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks.

Update (July 3, 2016) - added to main post as well

    ** Tentative Agenda - Posted July 3, 2016

    Friday - Arrivals

    • Snacks, Drinks and Beer for afternoon arrivals at the Dancing Bear Inn
    • Group Dinner at Mike's Pub - Hume Hotel - 422 Vernon St. - 7:30 pm

Saturday - Group Breakfast and Riding

    • Group breakfast at the General Store Restaurant - front of Hume Hotel - 422 Vernon St. - 9:00 am (civilized start time)
    • Snacks, Drinks and Beer for those who arrive back at the Dancing Bear Inn early or take short rides
    • Group Dinner at The Royal Pub and Grill - 330 Baker Street - 7:30pm until 10:00pm - music (live musician - Bocephus King - blues, pop, rock) food paid for by your fees (regular menu)

** Just have to confirm with the owners that the bookings are still on. Talking to them in Nelson (July 4-5)

Also, I've picked a 9:00am start for breakfast to allow us all to get a civilized sleep and start in the morning. Most of the rides in the area are 4-6 hours (tops). So that'll give you plenty of time to eat, prepare and head out with a small group.

Also, I know for 'type A' organizers that everyone wants riding groups and leaders, etc. The last meet went really well with riders making their own groups of 4-6 people and choosing their own routes along with places to stop for lunch in Kaslo or New Denver, or some returning mid-afternoon back to Nelson and picking a spot. I like things to be less regimented and planned and give people time to go see what they'd like to see with like-minded individuals in their group. Plus, I spend the entire year as a teacher organizing field trips and groups and this is the one time I'd like to just let things be more organic and work themselves out.

I'll post some basic maps soon and bring printed copies for everyone.

I'd very much appreciate your guidance SFOM.

I'm torn between heading west after the meet-up or going east to Banff area. If I got to Nelson Monday, 7/18, I'd have Tues. > Thurs to go do a quick run to Banff and back to Nelson. There is only one place I'd like to explore more than just ride through there: I've been wanting to visit the Burgess Shale area forever. Perhaps three days is not enough. If were to leave a few days earlier I might be able to satisfy my Banff objective and still go west after the meet. Then I may be able to hook up with the Calgary riders for the trip to Nelson. I'll think about that. Hard.

Looking forward to this With Wild Anticipation.

    Terry

Well, keep me posted. I think you have to book well in advance for closed tours of the Burgess Shale, so you might want to enquire about that. I'd be happy to ride out to Nelson with you or show you around Lake Louise/Banff and up the Icefields Parkway to Jasper.

  6. I'd like to conduct an informal poll. Our budget doesn't support catering for our group dinner on day one (Friday), unfortunately. But...

We could go a couple routes:

    1. BBQ steaks, potatoes, veg, dessert and adult bevvies on the patio at the hostel
    2. Prepaid dinner in a pub as a group

Then night two (Saturday) we can select an appropriate meeting place for food and drinks together.

What say ye? Let the heavens rain with your replies....

I hope this fuel shortage due to the Ft. McMurray fire sorts itself out before this trip.  Yesterday when I was riding to Merritt and back, Merritt was out of Regular gasoline at some stations. I think at this point it is more the Shell and Petro Can stations who are most affected.  Maybe someone who lives in the area can keep and eye on that.

Esso and others don't have any problem supplying you gas at a premium price (pun intended). Gasoline went up $0.25/litre after the announcement (that's $1.00 per gallon approximately for you 'Mericans.

  8. The registration should be open still for rooms and the dinner. I did buy a few extra shirts - no monograms on the extra ones. Glad to hear you're coming. You can catch me for the tshirts when you arrive. There's only two guys in the dorm rooms if you want. I could move them together and you and your buddy could share the other room. Let me know - cheap accommodations with the group.

So, you're gonna ride an Off-Species Bike instead?

Well, if your bikes is sittin, in the parking lot, all by itself, in the middle of the night,,..

(Apply Mafioso Accent:) "It would be a terrible shame, if someone were, to, um, accidentaly, Armoural your Seat, Foot Pegs and Grips,,.. I'm just sayin,,.."

It'll certainly be off-species. Haha. You've taken the surprise out the armor all experience now. You'll have to get more creative. :)

Hey Mike et al, long time no see all my VFR friends!  Mike, thanks for the email a few months ago - sorry, I did not reply.

I think I may be able to get away and join you guys & gals - not sure yet on timing, but you may see a rather dirty Triumph Tiger 800XC in your mirrors :)

I can always wear a shirt from previous meets... and the Hume or Adventurer will be fine for a last minute decision.  I think they still both serve cold beer!

Would be great to spill some beer, swap lies and catch up with old friends...

    Tony.

Good to hear from you, Tony. It would be great to have you join us. There's still space at the hostel if you're interested.

  11. Just want to confirm whether the following people want t-shirts or not, and if so, what is their size. I haven't received payments for these ones but if you're still interested you can pay me at the event or send me PayPal at superfunkomatic@gmail.com. The shirts will have each attendee's name printed on the back. Sorry, no ladies sizes as they are generic this time.

  12. hmmmmmm.

I have made numerous trips to nelson, creston, castlegar, trail, kaslo , new denver, nakusp, revelstoke and numerous laps beyond that, and I have never had any tickets or trouble, nor have i heard of any one else having big problems in bc.. i do not ride like a slow poke, but i try to not be obnoxious either.

    just my experience.

looking forward to loads of fun!

Precisely, to quote Will Shakespeare - "Much ado about nothing...." We'll be fine. You play that far above the speed limit, you pay - fine, impoundment and in your future insurance installments. Your choice. Have fun, but not too much fun. :goofy:
