  1. When I called my dealership, they said don't ride it. Evidently they've heard of the rear wheel actually looking up. Which is odd since they only sold 3000 of these bikes world wide it looks like, according to the Japanese recall posting. I had to buy a car to drive because I'm not taking the bike. I wonder if I can make honda pay for that...hmmm...anyway, my dealer said early Feb is when I should expect my parts. Then again, living north of Seattle, parts won't be here until July, HA!

I think if the situation was urgent Honda would have notices to owners ASAP. That isn't happening so I will keep on putting as many miles as possible on my VFR.

Good job on Honda for addressing this issue properly.

  3. Question - appleis to USA owners - I'm a second owner, bought directly from a man that bought the bike new.

How will Honda know to email a letter to me? Do they check title registrations through the Department of Motorvehicles for each state? Or do they send letters only to those who bought new?

The bike had the extended warranty, so I transferred that into my name at the small local dealer, but I wonder how Honda Motorsports will know to include me in the notice.

Just curious - still not showing up on the recall page.

    THanks,

    -Dan

They'll find you through DMV. Got a recall notice for my Yamaha several months ago. I am not the original owner and never registered anything with Yamaha.

@Swimmer, it sounds like you have already updated the mailing routine by transferring info at a dealership, as I was told that Is the process. Not done by phone or online.

They also confirmed the pending driveline U-joint recall today. Honda Powersports Cust Ser. 866-784-1870. (Have your Vin. # handy)

Honda of San Mateo, CA also confirmed pending recall...

"If you're having issues, have it inspected. The dealership will communicate up line if needed. If no issues, wait for the letter" was their comment to me.

At speed all feels fine here but...

How much slow speed slop n clatter is too much? I'm hearing varying degrees.

No, I didn't buy the Yamaha from a dealer and certainly never took it near a dealer. The recall notice just showed up. They get their information from the DMV.

  5. Not seeing my 2010 listed as having a recall either... I wonder if the 'fix' addresses the real problem, or if it's just a band-aid for users to limp along until their next motorcycle purchase.

Limp along? Not a whole lot of drive shaft failures happening so I suspect this may have gone completely unnoticed had Honda not issued the recall. I didn't feel like I was limping along on my way to work this morning.

  6. A few heads should roll at Honda because of this problem with the drives haft on what was one of Honda ' s flagship bikes.......

You'd think they would have gotten it right after producing so many shaft driven bikes for so many decades already. A very painful recall as Honda also had to convince VFR fans that shaft drive was the way to go with the 7th gen.....A few heads should roll at Honda because of this problem with the driveshaft on what was one of Honda ' s flagship bikes.......

It's not really a big deal presumably. Drop your bike off, they fix it and, you take it home. Good for them for taking action.

The thought of a VFR1200 stop sell order in the US is pretty comical.

  7. I stopped in today at my local dealer and as soon as the shop manager seen me he said we got a recall on your bike just got it yesterday. He said I should get a letter in the mail. He also said as far as he knew right now the recall was on all year models.

Did he mention when they would have the parts needed for the repair? My VFR is not going anywhere near a shop until they have the parts on hand.
  8. Unfortunately, now I have exectly the same big end problem with my vfr dct 2012.

My question is this: to get to the bearing shells in order to replace them, obviously must split the crankcase. Honda requires that everything must be taken off, included cylinders and the drive unit and complex coupling

Due to a lack of special tools to get those parts dismounted properly, I hope to be able to split the case with the clutch and cylinders in place and only took out the bolts of the bevel gearbox, because its mounted just over the breakline. After this I thought to be able to split the case as well.

But despite of having all the all bolts according to the manual out, I can’ t get the scales split up, even with a bar I putted some force say 70kg to it, but the space at the edges never got more then say ½ mm, so it looks like there is still something holding it together, somewhere at the place where the bevelgear unit is situated.

Does anyone have experience or a tip on how you get the block opend up without force/ damage.

The problem is of course that I do not have all the special tools, but I suppose in Africa you had them either who did you manage ?

Did you find any of the aluminum bits in the sump as was found to be an issue with some 2010 models bought in the UK?

How many km on the bike?

  9. I bought my new, 0 mile 12' VFR1200 on Oct. 10. After riding it 820 home I started tracking the mpg on fuelly. First 3 tanks with my normal commute.

    192.8 miles @ 46.3 mpg

    211.7 miles @ 47.7 mpg

    213.8 miles @ 49.7 mpg.

I expect those numbers to get a little better once the motorcycle is broken in. As usual, the horror stories of bad mpg are overblown and have more to do with factors not dependent on the motorcycle.

Swimmer, have you calculated speedo error, or might you be using a GPS-based odometer?

Yes, the speedo is quite accurate and the odometer is short by a little over 1%. So, in reality my mpg figures are slightly better than posted but, close enough.

  10. whats with the big disappointment with the fuel tank capacity/range across the 7th gen VFR community?! really whats so bad with a ~200km or so fuel range anyway regardless of the engine's size or the fuel tank capacity

On my 5th gen, I would get to about 180 miles until the last bar. On the 6th gen, pretty much the same. If I was really flogging the bikes, I would get down to 150. On the 7th gen, I get to 120 miles and it is blinking. Fuel economy so far has been 33-35mpg.

  11. Changed my vote from Rotella to Mobil 1. I really wanted to believe it would replace an expensive synthetic, but my 5th gen ate it in less than 2,000 miles. And shifting was pretty bad with the Rotella out the gate. Bike runs/shifts/sounds much, much smoother with M1 4T again.

Maybe it's a gear driven cam thing but no more cheap oils for me.

Which Rotella? I prefer the Rotella T6 to the Auto Mobil 1 I was running.

  12. Remove the stickers on the fuel tank

    - Use only unleaded fuel

    - Always wear protective gear

Improves the look and lower the weight with up to .5 g.

Got any great advice about removing the stickers from the tank without messing up the finish?

    Goo Gone.

  13. I can appreciate fabricating all of that stuff by laying out everything by hand and manually machining everything but I could probably model all of that stuff in SolidWorks in a few hours and send it out to be made by some shop with a CNC and a week later I'd have my parts for much cheaper than what you were paid to do that.

I send a lot of my small jobs to some dude who does all his machining without a CNC because he is fast and his quality is super so I can appreciate your skills but NFW would I pay $2k for that.

  14. I think I'll write Pablo a note telling him how many people are finding the pre-set or suggested flow schedule to be too rich. After moving my pro-oiler from my 650R (where I had zero chain adjustments or cleaning in 14k miles) I found the suggested setting too rich for my VFR. Currently I am using 20/3 setting and that may be a little lean for commuting. NFW will I ever go back to the clean/lube routine pre pro-oiler.
