  1. The bike has an throttle-delay. Most ignore it, but it can make you crash when you don't expect it.

Strongly disagree with this sentiment. Throttle delay introduce by the system is insignificant here. Any such delay is not noticeable in human time.. If it is, then your system has a malfunction and should be repaired.

While an additional delay must exist (there is a microprocessor involved), it will be measurable in 1's of milliseconds at most. I find it unlikely the system would not be polling the throttle position less than 100 times per second.

This delay will not be the cause of any crash.

  2. Anybody seen a new version of service manual? 2013 model?

I bought a 2013 version and they shipped me a 2010 plus a few sticker sheets to reflect the few changes, including a "2013" sticker to stick on the cover. The changes were nominal.
  3. I use the scala G9 embedded helmet speaker/mike (Arai), connected via BT to the Zumo, which is in turn connected via BT to my phone.

When I first got this system I would need to crank up the sound quite a bit esp at hwy speeds, and my ears would noticeably ring after a long ride.. pretty sure I was causing myself hearing damage. Then I read a forum thread about the importance of using ear plugs whie riding, and I expected that doing so would impede my audio system... but someone on that thread also suggested they could hear their audio better with ear protection, and sure enough, this very much holds true for me as well. Now I never ride without ear plugs, and enjoy music even if I am traveling at 80+mph.

Btw, it is very nice to be able to call home or have home call me while out on a ride...

  4. I bought my new, 0 mile 12' VFR1200 on Oct. 10. After riding it 820 home I started tracking the mpg on fuelly. First 3 tanks with my normal commute.

    192.8 miles @ 46.3 mpg

    211.7 miles @ 47.7 mpg

    213.8 miles @ 49.7 mpg.

I expect those numbers to get a little better once the motorcycle is broken in. As usual, the horror stories of bad mpg are overblown and have more to do with factors not dependent on the motorcycle.

Swimmer, have you calculated speedo error, or might you be using a GPS-based odometer?

I bought a zero mile '13 and on the tire it came with my speedo was close but about 2% off (I don't recall in which direction).

Also don't forget that tire pressure affects speedometer.

  5. Sena and Scala G9 now interop over bluetooth with a nailed up intercom. Works well.. my G9 linked with my buddy's Sena and we rode together for a day.

Also, my G9 links well with the Garmin 590.. definitely recommend the set for touring. However, I still need to integrate radar detector audio into my set up.

If you use iphone, then scala + sena intercom gives you priority radar detector audio through a muxing component with full dial and pandora/mp3/garmin link capabilities ..

  6. About 1/2 the time, my '13 won't shift from 2nd to 3rd (it misses) if I run hard from 1st to 2nd and keep full throttle while in second and momentarily let off throttle (fraction of a moment) as I slam the kicker into 3rd. The work-around for my problem is to fully disengage throttle while in second (literally feel the drive train backlash) for just a moment before shifting into 3rd. This problem occurs only when I run hard and keep power on while shifting and the bike is hot.

In otherwords, I can't drag race without hesitation as I slam from 1st to 2nd to 3rd.

  7. I have had it kick on several times..

I had to drive up a very step gravel drive way and I noticed it was kicking in as I was going up, so I further tested it by fully opening the throttle, and it behaved well.. Gave me all sorts of throttle confidence that I otherwise would not have had in that situation. I estimated this particular gravel driveway at about a 12-14% ridiculously steep incline for about 100 meters. It was very interesting how the bike just putted along.. Clearly the ignition was limited, but I suspect fueling was also limited because again, I drove up puttering with a full open throttle.

A few days ago I slapped a set of Angel GTs on the bike, and as I left my 20mph community by turning 90 degree right onto the 50mph main road, I goosed the throttle a good bit (which I often do at this point.. who doesn't love the acceleration, right?).. Anyways, the rear broke loose quite a bit, and while the TC sensor light turned on, I cannot be sure whether it was TC or my immediate correction that saved my butt from spilling over. The spin out in that case definitely put me on the edge at which had I gone for another fraction of a second, there is no question I would have dumped the bike.. It was as if the road was wet after a long dry spell. Anyways, again, TC kicked in, and it is possible although I can't be certain, that it may have saved me from spilling.

So my review is that it seems good on certain one-off cases (steep gravel), but seemingly slow to react in others..

  8. In my late teens I bought an old beat up '76 6-cylinder mustang in Spokane, WA for what i thought was the killer deal ($100!!).. It had been sitting exposed to the weather for several years, looked like crap, but the seller was convinced it would fire and drive away, so we gave it a shot... I lived in Kennewick, about 2 hrs away. My buddy and I spent too much time trying to get it started, and finally it fired, so with much excitement I threw my tools inside, put her in gear, verified the brakes worked good enough, and headed her to the interstate (buddy following behind).

Damn thing wouldn't go faster than 35 mph! It got to 35 fairly quick, but anything faster and it would sputter and seemed to misfire. We were nearly out of town, exhausted, so we made the decision to just "go for it" and drove to Ritzville with great frustration.. My buddy followed with his hazards on for the 60 miles to Ritzville...All the while running through my head what I was going to do to further troubleshoot the problem when we reached this mid point.

Vacuum advance not working? Points out of gap? Crappy plug wires? Plugs fouled? Sure seemed like an ignition problem.. But strangely it would rev just fine when disengaged from the drive train....

I pulled into the service station very frustrated and my buddy runs up to me.. "Jimbo, I bet that the fuel filter is plugged up!". Made sense! More speed requires more energy requires more fuel!! We certainly had enough time to come up with this as a plausible explanation!

No filter for sale at service station (stupid thing was built into the carb!).. I yanked it out, drove a screw driver through it (yes, I was this frustrated by now), connected the line, added more fuel, and headed to the interstate.

Wow!! That old beat up mustang did 110mph before it got too wobbly!

I share with you a life lesson that I will never forget: More speed requires more energy requires more fuel.

If any vehicle can rev up when not under load, yet the vehicle is limited in speed regardless of the gear it is running, then the immediate suspect is the engine is starved for fuel.

  9. I just threw a pair of GTs on my VFR12 after the stock rear BT021RN failed with 3700 miles, and the front BT had greatly exceeded the wear line indicator. Very disappointed with the front BT wearing out so quickly, although perhaps my fault for running it warm at 36 (cold at 30).. The rear seemed to have at least 1/2 more tread to go, but it failed without cause. Honda dealer could not explain failure. Bummer!

Choco seems to swear by the GTs and I can't keep up with him in the twisties so GTs are good enough for now! Looking fwd to putting some time on these bad boys...

  10. If anybody is looking for some ear plugs to try, my favorite right now are Moldex Comets 25. They are ribbed silicone, not foam, easy to put in, and IMHO block just the right amount of noise for mixed city/highway riding. I'd still take my 35s for long rides at entertaining speeds though.

By coincidence, the 'Mighty Plugs' I mentioned in an earlier post are on sale through Froday, if anyone is interested. These truly are the most comfortable plugs. I ended up picking up a dozen a few weeks back and have been wearing them again for any ride I take.

Are there other plugs that people might seriously recommend for a bake off?
  11. My fleet:

I had an '81 CB750F in my younger years but always wanted a CB1100F... Then I scored an '85 VF700F (along with an '84 VF750F for parts), and drooled over the VF1000R wishing I had been a bit more patient!

And in your fleet pic, I see you have one of each!! Very very nice collection!!

  12. Looking good. Nice save on the frame. I've seen them fairly swollen in that spot from water sitting in there and freezing, ballooning the metal out.

Thanks...I was unaware that this could be a problem. I was glad to not have to get a replacement frame.
I learned about this frame rusting problem in the early nineties when I ran an '85 VF700F. I read somewhere that Honda recommended drilling a small drain hole at the bottom of the frame. I recall this issue effected the 83's and 84's only..
