  1. [Guys,

    I went through this one on a different bike last year. I have an oldSuzi GS850G...I lost 5 of the original8 bolts....I useda Time-Sert kit from Wholesale tools...they are listed in the Fastenal cataloge or site as well....Yes its a lot of work but I found them better than a heli-coil. drill out bolt, re-tap and insert new threaded device that is threaded on the outside to new threads and correct pitch for the stud....when done correctly as it is installed the ends are flared locking the insert into the head or whatever part of the motor you are working in....one can also stake the outside of the insert to the machine as well....Good luck

    Now is the time to look around to your fav tire store and check prices....with all the new tires coming out there are bound to be some major blow outs coming...I found pilot power frt for VFR $82-$83 US.....IF you got tire money you have skittered basck might be time to invest in this years supply of fresh tires...I am.....

    There is a new Michelin coming out to replace the power and the power 2ct.....I hope B/Stone did a re-mix of the 021

    front compound....a tire I like but not its longevity.....and by these new improvements and obsolescence....there should be some good deals floating around ...like a power front for my VFR for 82.USDand a rear for $120....I'm feeling better now....

  4. Hi Guys,

    I'm using a older model a 2610 that I got from the bay of fleas....{E-Bay} almost 5 years back it goes from my ST to my auto no problem. I have set up a ram mount on my VFR now and as soon as I acquire the harness I'll be using it on that one too....All the whistles and bells are fine if you are into that if you want basic nav ability the 2610 has done me well....and if its any concern for lonjevity it spent its first few "new" years on a DL1000 out west before coming to the east coast.....so all in all the build on Garmin is impressive to me, matched up with everything I have ever heard about their customer service ...Garmin is hard to beat.....

    While this will rage on and on...as bad as which tire or oil should I use {like} I cannot accept the bleck comment re Red...sport bikes ought to have some red on them....... My old VFR has a blemish from the P.O. and not being one to have a scratched up bike a custom finish would not be too far of a reach for me......

    The issue I'm trying to address is the seemly endless parade of dumb ass drivers that only react to a reduction in following distance with a bright-light-wake-up. I've noticed if I slow down with out a brake light, people will let the following distance close right up, at least until they see a brake light. My goal is more to get them to maintain a safe following distance.

    Look...you're never going to get the entire driving public to give you some magical, mythical following distance where you feel comfortable with your vacuum tail light. I don't seem to have this problem with slowing down and drivers tailling me, cuz I go fast until it's time to slow down or stop. But if you want to put this wacky thing on your bike, go ahead and do it. You'll be the only bike in the universe with a vacu-brakelight, and you'll be happy.

    If you were taught downshift like MotoGP to slow for traffic stoppages, well, maybe your instructor was wrong. But yeah, we all downshift as we slow, to have the ooomph to go when the time comes. We do the same thing in cars all the time. Everyone downshifts...including modern cars with auto transmissions. But it's not to slow down, for the most part. It's to be ready to GO. Or you could increase rear tire wear with this method of slowing down, if you want. It's your tires. Do it.

    The legality comment was about multi-colored lights, which I think was poking fun at your entire "slowing down light" concept. Brake lights are legal, regardless of how you apply them. After all, some dimwits ride the brake in their Escalades all the time, and they never get tickets...so it must be legal, right?

    As for the rest of us, it appears that we don't think it's a useful invention. But what IS a useful invention is Hyper-lites or any of the other bright, flasher systems that are available for minimal cost. Those DO get driver's attention with a touch of your brakes, which is what you're supposed to be using anyway. If those devices don't get someone's attention, then you're doomed anyway. Life is like that. Maybe you shouldn't be doing these long, gradual slow-downs that get drivers on your ass, wondering why you don't keep up with the flow of traffic. Just go quickly and then brake when you need to. And drivers are going to get on your ass, regardless of what you do, Hyper-lites or not. They don't care that you're on a bike. That's the way it is.

    Or install your vacu-light. I think the subject has been beaten to death at this point. You've argued against every point that anyone has made against this silly idea, so just go ahead and do it. Set the vacuum at 5 inches so the light will come on when you get off the throttle in 6th gear at 50 mph. :huh:

    Be safe out there......or get a car.

    Wow,.... feel better. It was just an idea. There were a couple members that were intrigued, obsessively you were not, and that's OK. Based on the feedback I got (which I did ask for), I'm probably not going to try this, but who knows, I might get bored someday and give it a try. I figured I could make it happen for around $20 and wanted to see if anyone thought it had any safety value.

    I'm sorry if anyone thought I was arguing against their point. That wasn't my intent. I just thought the "D" in VFRD was for discussion.

    I know how to make this switch install happen. If you'd like the info, PM me and I'll share it with you. Other then that, I guess we can consider this topic beat to death and closed. I don't want to upset anybody else with this silly idea.

    The Zumo line are some fine pieces ofequipment but I just want directions....I have a quest but as I have aged the screen is too small. The 2610 I use and can go from my VFR to my ST1300 is the bomb...big screen easily updated uses CF cards

    which have come way down in price....I can do custom mapping from a lap top or desk top..... or use the built in features and was way cheaper....music is nice but I wanna hear my motor...and call me some other time.....YMMV..

  8. Harbour Freight, Cycle Hill, NoMar......DIYDS......why pay for what everyone can do it only takes a few times to learn....how many tires do you go through a year? By the end of this year my NoMar will be paid off in savings over stealers{dealers} and you can help your riding buds and mabey get a tip for the use of the tool.....hey a $10-$20 bill here and there ain't a bad deal.....I've gone from taking hours to changing a sport bike tire in 20 minutes....it can be done in far less time too.....dealer charging 25-35 -40 to mount and balance a tire ! one tire....do your own and it like Dire straights said "Money for nothing and your checks for free"

    These tires may be just fine, the price is fine,and if you are on a down turn or want to impress your wife with a meal that is fine too.....One poster remarked the technology was about 10 years out of date...nah its more like 20....Back in the day of the FZR400

    a few of you may remember if not I understand Yokohama came out with these new fangled whiz bang tires that the mechanic /racer in a dealership I was doing parts in loved them....so we kept him a good supply......he liked them did fairly well on them,and the folks that were importing them had an exclusive on them coming into the USA....Yokohama didn't like that but contracts being what they are specially if its iron clad....well the tires went away but not Yokohoma...Over the years they did many an OEM tire for the big four...but those racing types were tied up in legalise til the patents ran out, in enters who ever bought them out...was it Nang Kang or Cheng Shin...???? I don't know or remember or care You can find their tires in the back of the JC whitney cataloge.....Free thought ,choice , where to spend your money is almost a right...I defend not nor do discredit the people making these tires today...If you want to run them and you like them...aint life grand......

    Being an old fart the guages I have are old,but that isn't a mark against them....they were hard to find and I have seen few since ..one is a VDO guage 0-120 i have an old Suzi pouch from a fork guageit stays in wrapped in a wash cloth to protect....

    my fav is my Michelin guage...nice large easy to read guage with a rubber cushion and hose about 2 ft longwoth handle and the nozzle is adjustable to fit on bikes with large rotors or ones just plain hard to get to....it comes in a sturdy carry case and doesnot leave my sight.....

    I've had mine for a little over a year and balanced several of mine and more of friends....When I picked it up the fellow from H/F brouight out a box and sent me on my way....,the tool gave me a case of them....yeah four of them.....I got the adapters for BMW,VRE and for the cruisers......didn't care about the Ducs......but all in all it works very well. I keep it covered to keep dust out of the bearings....I'd buy this one again...

    I have to agree with the poster who simply stated use one key.....unless you are the school janitor and are in need of them all the time.....I love to see someone with pagers phones and three keyrings ...are you going riding or going to work.....heaven forbid gravity take over and you go for a tumble with that stuff hooked to ya...friction is gonna leave ya with a mark not soon forgotten...ONE key for me please.....I got a wall of peg board in my "Old Guys Garage" and a place for keys....blessed/curssed with five bikes so keeping up with keys is important...when I leave out I get my VFR key, get to where I am going it goes in my watch pockewt,when I get back home bike goes in garage, the key goes back on the wall.....Haven't lost a key in years....

    From what research I have done it is the same material as OEM body work ,thinner....they come painted and cleared.....you don't get a tank though...shipping is high but the plastic is reasonable.....better yet there are nmany versions too...the Konica model looked sweet...but it helps to be patient for the install.....

    This is an interesting thread to me...I was around when Yokahoma was the mfg for the most of what is being sold as a shinko.

    The Yokas were fine tires and I kept our racer {at the time} for the Dealership I worked at all he needed. Over on another boars GSresopurces a great place for old school GS model Suzis....there, a cheng shin or a nang kang is as good or better than them high priced B/Stone S11s or a high priced Dunlop......Guys ,You GET what you pay for....I'll wager no person here bought an interceptor because he{or she....don't want to offend...too much} they wanted to ride a lesser bike.....

    I hate that quality tires cost 2-300. for a pair......you can search around and find bargains...it wasn't too long ago Cycle Gear had Pirelli sets to fit a VFR for less than $200. As the old Cajun cook Justin Wilson said "some folks say drink red wine with this and white wine with that...I say drink the knid of wine you like" For me a set of Pirellis would be good or a set of BT016s would be AOK......motorcycle superstore is doing a sale right now some serious deals on tires....less thsn $300 an many lines.....just think of your investment...is a possible tire failre and the implications of it worth that much? NAh I didn't think so....I'll run a brand name not some wanna be trie company.....These bikes are sport bikes make no false conclusions about what Interceptors are and they deserve better....and drink the kinds wine you like....

    Some interesting responses, I have had the opportunity to test gravity...and its not what they have cracked it up to be.....

    old road rash girl is a trip...I hear she is now a riding coach......but the quwstion beckons to me and I go back to the day when I was in motorcyc;e sales...ah those were the days....Whos fastest,got most h/p but I always saved a time in my spiel for saftey gear.....I would hold up a pen amd let go of it....do that several times and say...gravity ,iy worls every time.....I'v an actual pic of afellow who fell down wearing blue jeans and sneakers w/ a football jersey...mucho road rash...his toes were black.....These things helped....Igot 0 commission on apparrel and I made he pitch for the customer...but as you know you can lead that proverbial horse to water.....

    Theres always the Heli bar....and at the IMS down in Greenville I saw these folks www.swattmotorcycle.com they got risers of differing heights from 1 1/2 tp 3 1/2 inches... check the addy and for the Heli search that one....or flea bay....

    New here ,but not new to paint and body work, take a good panel with you and the can scan it and make it to the hue you have...you can get the honda color code but thats not of much use....sides the PPG is less costly than the Color-rite.....The choices of clearcoats can make for a nicer finnish...I'm doing a base coat clear coat on an antique GS850GN I have owned for about 30 years...the color code was long gone....I had one panel that was good...they scanned it made me 4 qts of ready to spray and IU got their production clear...fast dry.....If you are going to do it yourself...check out the MSDS saheets on the product and the prodcut description sheets all on the site for PPG...Can't wait to see my new 1979....
