2007 VFR800 with 22,000 miles (32,000 km) See youtube video below: Are these the dreaded CCTs? Is it normal to get them sounding like this with this little mileage? My buddies 02 started rattling at 44k miles.

Good afternoon all, long time member but first time posting anything to this forum. I previously owned a 2006 VFR800 and loved it but life got in the way and it was sold to the next owner back in 2018. Fast forward 4 years and I acquired this 2003 VFR800 w/18k miles for a steal... because of this semi-sporadic noise in the engine: I replaced both the copper exhaust gaskets at the head as well as the silver collar gaskets in the mid-pipe area, then I followed the directions for rewinding/servicing the CCT but the noise is obviously still there. (Towards the end of the video you will see a little smoke from oily hands on the exhaust pipes, this is not coming from the engine.) Any suggestions on things to inspect or try before I go down the long road of sourcing a good used engine to swap in? Overall the bike is in really good shape for being 20 years old and was garage kept nearly all of its life. The only mechanical modifications are a Staintune slip-on exhaust, everything else is cosmetic. Thanks all!

Can anyone tell me which part number I want to order for the CCT's on my 2003? Partzilla lists both a 14520-MCW-003 and -013 as applicable(#6), is the -013 a newer or revised part number and is it preferred over the -003?

Need some help from the 6th gen experts here - changing my clattering, rattling CCTs today. Rear went fine, easy as pie. Then I gently extracted the front one so as to not disturb the metal cap annnnnddddd out came a CCT with no cap at all, just a rubber bumper completely destroyed and worn through all the way to the plunger’s metal base (see attached pic). I guess I now know the source of the god-awful noises coming from the motor, but any ideas on how this could happen? Could the PO have installed without the metal cap - or could the cap somehow come off while under tension (I assume not)? If the cap was in there somewhere, I’m guessing that would’ve been catastrophic already. I also presume those lost little rubber bits are now swimming in the engine - could that cause major damage if it hasn’t already? As background, I’ve been getting some rattling above 3.5-4K rpm for the last 5000 miles or so, and very loud metallic clatter from the front bank the last time I started the motor - though it idled and revved okay. None of the usual failing CCT idle rattles, but I just had a hunch as it’s the Achilles heel and always a good place to start. Any advice is appreciated, as always.

Hi. So I am new too this group and this is my first post. Just wanted to tell you guys my experience with using manual cam chain tensioners. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. It all began when after riding my bike and getting it up to temp I stopped at a friends house and noticed a rattling from my engine. I thought maybe my chain was loose but I was not moving. After doing some research I found this site and quickly found out it was most likely may cam chain tensioner/s. I decided to go with the manual ones because the OEM ones tend to be faulty some times and i wanted to ensure my engine last for as long as financially possible. I was going to go with APE tensioners but switched over to PSR (Powerstands Racing) because they were in stock at MotoSport, a place I trust way more than Ebay. I was very impressed with the qualilty of this item and the effort taken to ensure top notch perfomance. It as neatly packaged and included the needed gasket, a key chain, and a PSR sticker. To set the stage for my endeavor I was working with a decent selection of tools and knowledge from past experiences with dirtbikes and what not. My garage not being the warmest place during New Engllands god awful winters was a steaming 33 degrees and my tools were about -4 according to my internal hand thermostat. The removal of the OEM ccts had to be the hardest part. It required removing the tank and airbox. I did not have enough time or knowledge to rip apart the throttle bodies just to get to the front one. With some finesse and muscle I was able to remove the front tensioner. After removal the PSR one was very easy to install and took minimal time. The adjustment bolt has a 14mm head and the mounting bolts are 10mm. After I installed it I torqued to the required hand tight spec and moved to the rear. The rear was 100x easier than the front, but by this time it was 12 am and I had work the following day. But I kept on cooking because I knew if I did not finish tonight I would never get it done till spring. After I installed both cct's with the help of a buddy and some monster it was time to adjust them. I had my buddy adjust the front tensioner as I adjusted the rear. Following other posts we loosened until cam chain noise and then tightened until noise went away but no further. In total it took me about 11 hours to change all my fluids and do the ccts. Minus a few breaks and mental cool downs. Plus my buddy didn't show up till 11:30. By 1 am ol' Smokey was back up and running with no cam chain noise just the sewing machine exhaust note. If you read up until this point I would like to just say Thank You and if you see anywhere I should improve or anything you think I did wrong please let me know down below. Thanks for reading and have a VFRful day.

I've been searching for threads regarding CCT replacement. I know they are out there - at point I thought I saw one pinned. Now that I'm about to tackle the front CCT.... can't find it. I read one from Tightwad and embedded in that was a pinned thread. Also just recently someone here had trouble with the timing chain slipping a tooth when the CCT was removed. So I want to be careful to avoid that. And yes - I should be able to find these threads..... Hence, Ridicule is widely accepted here..... Thanks, Ernie

Hey guys, I posted about my cct failure about 4 weeks ago on this site. I didn't know what was wrong with it and had to ask you guys. I have had the bike at a mechanic for some time now and he came to the conclusion that the CCTs that I replaced were over tightened. Thats what caused the chain to break. So any of you out there thinking about buying either manual or auto adjusters for CCTs, Please buy auto adjustable ones!!! Its very easy to over tighten those by feel and I blew up my engine because of that.

Hi guys, I have a 2002 VFR 800 with 68000 miles. I had the CCTs replaced 8000 miles ago with manual CCTs. The ticking noise went away and everything was fine. Last 3 weeks, I noticed that my hands would get numb after riding on the highway for an hour. It happened every time. I didn't take any note of that but I did wonder why the engine had more vibration in the past few weeks. Today, I rode about 40 freeway miles and when I got to the exit near my house, I noticed a very loud clacking noise. Like Ducati dry clutch sound.. First thing I did was check the oil and it was fine, then since I was about 2 miles away from home, I kept riding with the clacking noise. Note that the noise is only audible at idle or low rpms. Then when I was half a mile away from home, I lost all the power from the engine and it failed to start. I managed to keep it moving by starting with my hand on the throttle. I managed to get home with the bike and that last half mile was weird because it didn't sound anything like a V4 engine anymore. But i got home smoothly. I suspect that the cam chain has jumped off.... Note that I replaced it 8000 miles ago.. What should I do guys?

Just changed the rear CCT today. I was hoping it was that one so I didn't have to take off the tank and air box. Not really that hard to do at all. Going to do the front one tomorrow. May be a silly question but do I have to drain the coolant as it is mentioned in the original post? http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/38619-cam-chain-tensioner-replacement-vtec/page-6
