  1. Late to the party and just now reading the entire shut down drama and glad to see it is resolved, for now, seems like. Miguel, we’ve never met but please know you have done an absolutely tremendous job starting this site and nurturing it. No one would ever deny how well you have done unintentionally becoming a sort of “global moto-matchmaker” for all of us. Sure, it’s bike info but it’s so much more than that. I appreciate the clearinghouse for info to allow me to work on my two 1st gens, my 4th gen, and my color-matched anniversary 6th gen in my garage but to be honest, a dealer could do all of that. I've finally reached the point where I can pay for that. Much more importantly to me is the people I’ve met here, both just in the forums as well as in actual real life on rides. That part is priceless and is worth so much more than the info to me. A younger me would fight back on that point but the current me with 50 consecutive years as a motorcyclist in a dozen US states so far knows it as truth. Bikes and esp the VFRs are cool but they come and go for many of us. The stuff that remains between bikes and when we are bike-less and when we move on with new bikes and brands, THAT’S the stuff I come here for. I know you mentioned all is well for now bc..well..as admirable as the numerous offers to help run the site seem you said you simply don’t KNOW the folks offering to help you run it or possibly take over the reins. I get it. But I’d say this: in the end it’s just a website. Others can run it if needed by you. It’s not a kid or a spouse or a pet. It could surely continue right along A-OK in other hands. I suppose I’m saying…don’t sweat it if you have to pass it along. You certainly have done your part. The legacy, to me, is the initial work and how awesome it has become under your care. All things to be immensely proud of. If it’s drama you don’t need, then we understand and it’ll be fine. If anything changes in the future as far as the site running/upkeep/certs/fees etc and/or your thoughts on any of it, be sure to let us know. We all have a vested interest in the site, but more so in you. You’ve earned it, Mijo.
  2. I had Sta-Bil in all my stuff too. A healthy amount. Like much more than it calls for, b/c hey, why not? More=better, and I really don't want to be going thru the carbs on 4 bikes. And here I am, going thru the carbs on 4 bikes. All of this could have easily been solved by me...riding. Not 400 mile trips. Just a ride to the store now and then. But, add in a rainy CA winter and next thing you know, I'm going thru carbs. I got the 500 carb bank out earlier though already. Just need to get the bowl covers off tomorrow maybe sometime.
  3. I dunno. My 6th gen start/runs/idles/rides a-ok after sitting for months. None of my carb bikes do. So far, every one has needed a tear down cleaning.
  4. Bike buttoned up and idles and rides like a champ. Up next: my first gen. Same issue. Yay. My kingdom for FI on all my shite.
  5. Boom! That's it! Found out where it went, thanks to your foto, Cos. I knew it had to be held in by tension somewhere, and that's exactly how it's held. It does have a slight "bump" on the inside ends of those metal tabs in order to hold it in, but once I saw one side the spring and one did not, that was my clue. Thanks again. Now I can sleep at night!

  8. Just pulled them off again and flipped them over and still did not see where it might go. Didn't see where #10 and #12 went either. It HAS to be 10 or 12 but I'll be damned if I know WHERE they go. Doesn't seem like anything goes THRU the spring, esp. since I didn't unscrew anything and take it off. 10 and 12 just seem to float in that diagram. Thoughts?
  9. yeah that one is smaller and stays locked on the cable unless you unscrew it I guess. I'll guess I'll have to pull them off again and see how #10 and #12 stay on. It's the only thing I see.

  12. That was my immediate thought, but it doesn't look like there's anyway for it to go on that cable. Too small to fit over the knurled blk knob.
  13. If only there HAD been a previous owner...I'm pretty tight on keeping this thing clean. It was just sitting between the heads near the idle screw. I would have seen it earlier...
  14. Odder still, nothing was disconnected other than the float bowls, so if it IS #10 or #12, it slid off something without being taken apart etc
  15. Ok...just for fun, let's say it was #10 or #12. Where exactly do they go? In the diagram, it doesn't show really. The longer I look at it, the longer I think the two coiled springs I saw on the bike are the ones shown attached to carb bodies #22 and #23 in the foto.
  16. Nahhhh. Those two are really tightly coiled springs that run between 1 and 3 and 2 and 4. Also those are really heavy duty springs, looks like. The one I found is a light little one.

  18. Yep. I saw those two. And they are on the bike. Those are huge, tightly coiled springs. Probably 4" fully coiled.
  19. Wherever it went it just slid off from somewhere. Had to. In other words, I didn’t remove a screw or a nut etc that this went under. Does it go with any of the choke lever linkage somewhere maybe?
  20. PS If it helps, all I did was pull the carb bank out and flip it over. I did not disconnect the throttle cables. Just a lot easier and quicker this way to get to the bottom of the carbs I thought.
  21. Ok. I finally got around to pulling the carbs off. Pulled all of the pilot/slow jets and....they weren't really clogged that I could see. I was HOPING for a full-on gummed up/clogged jet(s) and/or float bowls but they were all sparkling. Blew the jets out anyway with the compressor and soaked them overnight. Still looked like I just pulled them out. Pulled ONE of the carb tops just to check and make sure a diaphram wasn't torn, but it was fine. Here's where I need your help. Put it all back together, and....found a small spring loose on the left side near the idle screw cable, just sitting on the engine. And I have no idea where it goes. I looked at the fiche. I ONLY took off each float bowl and removed each pilot jet. No springs there anywhere. Took off that one carb top (which has a much larger spring under it), but I rechecked that and the spring is still there. Looked all over the fiche in the CARB diagrams and found nothing that I could see where this goes. So...any ideas?

  23. Damn it. Due to a rarity of riding this wet CA winter, two of my bikes won't idle without choke. I've had Stabil in the tank since last fall but apparently it didn't work worth a damn. I tried Seafoam in the tank (ran rough with smoking, naturally), then straight Seafoam from a small external tank directly into the fuel line (smoking), then drained all the float bowls and ran straight Seafoam from the external tank again, cut it off, and let it sit for 72 hours. One bike (gen 4) got to the point it would idle enough for me to take it for a hard and fast ride, but it surges up and down 2000RPM when idling on it's own. It ain't right. Slow to come back down from revs too. The OTHER V4 (1st gen) surges on idle up and down, won't run off choke, and won't move (dies instantly) when given gas. Seafoam helped a bit on the 4th gen. Should I try it again? I REALLY don't want to pull these carbs off. I really don't. All of this could have been solved if I had just ridden the damn things more this winter. Ugh. My inline four had the same issue, but I pulled the carb bank and cleaned the jets in about 40 minutes. Super simple. Anyone got any wild-arse ideas that might work to avoid having to do this? My neighbors won't like the Seafoam again, but....??
  24. I've had the Marc Parnes setup for years now. He's LoCal SoCal to me so I've met him in person and been to his shop. I like it b/c I have 4 bikes that I ride, and can easily swap the RD unit between all of them, taking the lights along too. I'm using a bluetooth RD, so I get audio in my ear thru the Sena unit as well.
