Beginning of June I changed my tires. I had a set of Pilot Road 5s on my 800 that I'd mounted in September. After 6500 miles the rear was past the wear bars and handling like crap. The front had reached the wear bars. Since this was a Autumn/Winter/Spring set I'm not surprised I burned out the center, also because my suspension was worn out (got it refreshed in May). I put on a set of S21 takeoffs to hold me over until I decide what to try next. The plan is to do a lot of mileage so I need something that'll handle the miles without getting out of shape really fast.

Because the surface abrasiveness varies so greatly from area to area, can you share how many miles you get from other known tires so we can compare the PR5 with something we know from our area?

I’m glad to be back.  I can’t wait get back and ride the Smokies again...  eastern TN is where I wanted to move to for the riding but the wife wanted Florida.

... so we moved to Florida lol

i look forward to getting back and connecting! I’ll definitely look you up when I’m in the area!

Im actually a couple of hundred miles closer with my new address than I was riding from STL

Good to see the art of compromise is not lost on your marriage either.

I can’t believe I’m seeing what I’m seeing.... actual, live in the flesh (stainless steel), new performance headers for the VFR800’s!

I hope the more recent owners of VFR800s appreciate the gravity and significance of this accomplishment!  If I had any plans for more kids I would name them after these two fine gentlemen!

Thank you seems like too small an acknowledgment.... we should have a ride, throw a party, and consume mass quantities!

All I can do for now is thank you and acknowledge and support your efforts.  Next time I’m in your area of the country dinner and drinks are on me!

Please put me down for two sets of headers; a 5th gen full system and an 8th gen version... I already told the book keeper (wife) I’m getting them so let me know where to send the money.

I know I’ve been gone for a while... I’d like to let my friends on VFRD know that everything is ok now and I’m stoked to be back!

BTW... it took me three days to read through this thread!

.... and I loved every minute of it!

So glad to have you back! You were missed and we have some catching up to do when you get down (strike that now) up to the Eastern TN area ping me.

Quick question about the 8th Gen version. it will need the splayed front headers to clear the rads, but will the outlet accept the 6th Gen high level pipe/mufflers?

I am not aware of anyone mounting 6G pipes on an 8G bike,  though I have seen many 5G high mounts (Staintune and others) mounted on the 8G.

I dont think the undertail on the 8G would support the weight of hanging the 6G exhaust from it.

  5. Wow, thank you guys for bringing this to fruition!

It seemed to be the old 80/10 rule, where the last 10% never gets done - until now.

    i will need five sets.

    1. 5th gen with PC2 and Wolf exhaust, can upgrade the fuel management with the new O2 bungs and would probably forward my midpipe to be expanded for fit by Wade.

    2. 5th gen engine in 6th gen chassis with 2007 body (35th anniversary edition with 8th gen front forks and swinger) PCV with Staintune 6th gen exhaust.

    3. 6th gen with Torocharger, will need 8th gen front downpipes to add additional 8th gen lower rad for engine temp control, Rapid Bike fuel management and Staintune for 6g

    4. 5th gen track bike in 6g chassis - will need 8th gen front downpipes for removal of all sidemount rads for track day exploration of the envelope. Rapid bike and some can TBD...toying with paring front and rears only to run under tail exit for rear and under mount exit for front cylinders ala RC211V

    5. 6th gen with rapid bike controller and stock exhaust.

Let me know how to forward the deposit.

Shaping up up to the a great ‘19 !!!!

  6. I know this is a dormant thread but it is the closest I could find to my question.

I am building a track bike and looking at track bike displays, can anyone confirm that the 8th gen is canbus compatible?

I am thinking to start with an 8g harness and clip away what I don't need to wire in either http://www.xtracing.com/en/gpxzed/index.php

or http://aimsports.com/en/products/solo2-solo2dl/index.htm and thinking that the Solo 2 would be better if connecting via canbus.

  7. OK, how does that saying go?  "better never than late..."

I am packing up the tow rig on Saturday with 3-4 VFRs and 3 VFRD'ers and heading towards Custer.

As I read through this thread I see that I have missed several pacing items that required a response.  I will reach out to Tony when we arrive to see if there may be a spare beer or some such convenience.

Reserved my room on page one of this or the other thread but never confirmed.  Not used to such a thorough process. Looking forward to riding this area on a VFR instead of the F6B I went through there on my way home from Alaska on last year.

Not sure if I will be bringing my bespoke 5th gen that fits like my favorite pair of jeans or the ToroCharged 6th gen which still needs some fuel injection tuning, an exhaust and to have Traxxion work their magic.  See you guys in a week.

What is the recommended route across the Great Plains?

    :schla15:

Depends, You can go through lower KY and find some decent two lane back roads through the Southern Illinois and across the Mississippi but then you have to get north through Iowa and across SD or you can find some two lane roads along the rivers across Tennessee then tap dance the Arkansas/Missouri to take the beat down of Northern OK or Southern KS before heading to higher ground north through Colorado.

I will probably head out one way and back the other.  After 6 weeks and 15,612 miles to get from SC to Artic Circle and back this past summer I am just looking forward to hanging with the VFRD Peeps again.

I have one. It's helps, but does make finding neutral a pain in the ass sometimes.

Sometimes helps to find neutral as you coasting up to the stop before the transmission stops spinning.

  10. Just in case anyone is interested a company called Black Widow Exhausts in the UK do stainless steel catless headers for the VTEC. Also they are welded like the originals not held together with springs like some other aftermarket headers. They are £195 inc postage to UK and come with al the gaskets and clamps for rear pipes. They are also planning to do a range of silencers for the VTEC as well. They should hopefully be available within the next couple of months.

I have just fitted a set of headers to my 02 and am planning on having my PC3 custom mapped when I have decided if I am going to fit a set of their cans as well.

Do you have any pics of the pipes? Specifically the internal welds.

Do they look like gorilla welds (strong but ugly) that block a portion of the gas flow or does it look like quality kit?

BTW, the exhausts that are held together with springs instead of welded typically make for better fitment.

  11. There claiming it's just a assembly problem so should be no difference but yeah it would have been interesting to see if there was any changes.

That's not what the recall notice stated.

The recall notice stated that there would be checks performed on all VFR1200's and if the shaft needed to be replaced and the dealer did not have the newly designed they would utilize current inventory of replacement parts in the interim and then change the shaft again when the item with the counter-measures was available.

  12. Every VFR1200 I have ridden with the exception of the press release bikes have had a low frequency harmonic thrum emanating from the drive line.

I'm going to looking out for that every time I ride now. Git.

Seriously, never noticed anything like that in my meagre 3500 miles.

The last one I put any miles on was a 2012 model rented in Munich for the San Marino GP in 2014. I was hoping the once-in-a-lifetime fly away GP experience and the roads I had been planning to ride since I discovered google maps would sway me to make a purchase of a left over 2012 model when I returned home but it only made me more nervous.

You have to find that spot between cruise rpms and just slightly off throttle (and you may need more than 3500 miles for the assembly lube to show its' weakness) but I could identify the bike if I were a blindfolded pillion in that throttle position.

  13. I am glad that Honda have finally come clean on this issue.

Every VFR1200 I have ridden with the exception of the press release bikes have had a low frequency harmonic thrum emanating from the drive line.

I incorrectly assumed this was a design defect related to the new shaft/pinion interface that eliminates suspension jacking inherent in traditional shaft drive bikes.

I am actually excited that Honda have already developed a counter-measure as I really would like to replace my ST1300 with a VFR1200 and this was the single concern holding me back.
