I replaced the expired ssl certificate, and renewed the software licence. Looks as if the current system will not need to be completely upgraded as I thought. Which triggered me in the first place. That is a couple day affair and a hugh pain in the ass, Linux always has something extra you have to do to get what used to work to work again when you upgrade.

The problem is I just don't have the time I used to for this. I got about 100 or so messages I have yet to wade thru. But my weekend is almost over. It's been raining relentlessly so I can't even go for a ride on my new bike.

I am a bit confused as to my resolve, my feeling is I don't want to give up my baby, but I just don't have the time I to put into it this place deserves.

I had a few offers to take over..but I..I don't know these folks. Bottom line.

Glad the site is back in action!

My offer still stands as I don't mind the long term work and fiscal investment. I have ridden with many members here and am no stranger. Don't hesitate to reach out to discuss if you begin to consider to shut it down again as I'd love to indefinitely ensure that doesn't happen.

I know you haven't been contacted yet, but If you think I can help contribute, please let me know. I'm not a web wizard but can help somewhere I'm sure. I would love to keep this site going as well. It's been on my mind but I have been working 12 hour days (5:30A to 5:30P, M-F) the past two weeks and just kept slipping my mind when I get home. This are coming back to normal so I should be more available soon.

Luckily I think we are sorted for now. *cheer*

So...what happened? A few days of "Safari can't find this page" then VFRD life as normal.

thtanner, have you stepped into the gap?

Nothing has changed as of yet; the certificate is still expired. Some browsers will ignore it after a certain period of time (still will show Not Secure in the address bar) and load the site without prompting.

I'm currently in a holding pattern waiting for contact back.

Whoever is performing the archive, I am more than willing to setup a NAS at home to host an offsite backup image/mirror.

DM me. I've dabbled in computer networking before, and I could make it so.
    ---

EDIT: I may be able to use this FOSS tool called "HTTrack" and make my own mirror of the site.
    - I'll determine the size of the download, and I'll be off to buy a buncha hard drives.
    - I'll likely perform the task within a VM so I can work the process in tandem. I dont have many CPU cores, but It may help

If anybody has an ET for the hard sunset of the site, PLEASE let me know so I can gage how much time is remaining to get this done. It will accelerate my decisions.

There should be no need to bog down the poor web server with HTTrack. I am not archiving the site, but going to push to just continue it as is.

I'd hold off on doing such things unless we're unable to keep things going. Those crawlers really spike CPU and Disk IO.

I put a Road Cycle 847 on my 6th gen.  Generally it is fine, returning 14.6v - until things get warm.  A hot day and / or idling in traffic I'm getting battery voltage, and that's with HID's in place of the OEM headlights.  Even revving up past 5,000 rpm or so does not change the voltage.  Once moving again and it cools down a bit, things return to normal.  Not really a big deal unless stuck in a montster trafic jam.  Then it seems a dead battery isn't far off.    Jack says "eh, it's your stator".  Well, let's see, the issue didn't exist until I made the swap and the stator has less than 10,000 miles on it.  Anyone else with a Roadster Cycle 847 having this issue?

Never had an issue charging with a SH847 under any condition. The heat doesn't really affect them in my experience.

I'd be looking at your stator voltages when it's hot. Also make sure it doesn't develop continuity to ground when hot.

    Hi

Just to share the same happened to me. My OEM RR died on 2021, I've ordered a Mosfet and still this happened.

I was ridding felt the heat on my leg stopped and saw smoke coming from the fairing.

I will order another RR now from below website per @Mohawk advise, and I guess the big lesson learned here is ditching the connectors and just Solder the Wires.

I would not order the regulator that you linked. I'd order a SH847 from www.roadstercycle.com or Suzuki directly.

That regulator you linked is very low quality and should not be used from my experience. I have seen them fail. They also still cause pre-mature stator failure due to the nature of MOSFET technology. Series rectifiers actually keep the stator cooler! A cooler stator lasts many many more miles.

Management of this site can't be that difficult?

It seems to me we could find an IT Guy/ VFR lover who would/could take over the site?

Management of this site can't be that difficult?
It is and isn't. It's sporadic. Easy until there's major upgrades or alterations then it takes time and effort. A lot of the day to day work is that of the moderators.

Having such a large database also makes certain things a little more time consuming or difficult to plan for. It's not the smallest website in the world, but far from the largest.

It seems to me we could find an IT Guy/ VFR lover who would/could take over the site?
I have made a proposal to do such a thing (scroll up to read the full text). Miguel is going to reach out when they are able to discuss.

So fingers crossed we may be able to keep things going.

Yes, this, easy enough to set up DNS and redirect to a new domain.

The vfrd domain is registered through August 17th. So we'll just get a cert error after it expires??

After it expires you'll get a certificate error. The domain may be registered through Aug 17, but it's unclear when the hosting end date is. There's domain, hosting, and certificate all with potentially separate end dates.

I don't see any benefit to putting a new name on the site, even for Miguel. He'd still be the founder and have Admin access should he want it. He just would be off the hook for the backend work and money side.

It's very easy to attach another domain to the vhost if that's the path they'd want to take, though.

I'm sure several people here have PM'd Miguel about picking the forum up...but don't know what his thoughts are on that....

Anyone have direct contact with him and can mention it?

He did see my initial message as it's marked as read, so I'm still crossing my fingers that we'll be permitted to save the site. I know he wants to be done with it based on his post, and even transferring it to somebody is still a hassle; I totally respect that.

  9. Below is the message I just sent Miguel (for full transparency).

    Hi Miguel,

Just wanted to provide more detail into my proposal so you understand where I'm coming from, who I am, what my goals are, and what my capabilities are.

    Who am I?
Long term VFR owner, we have 4 in the stable (98,99, 2x 2014). My 98 has a spot in the living room saved for display when I can no longer ride it physically.

I am currently CTO of an ISP and heavily involved in network/systems administration and dev-ops. I have been on the hosting side since the late 90s. I am a certified database administrator among a bunch of other network and system certifications.

    What is my goal?
To take over both the administrative and financial burden of the website (ownership, essentially) to preserve the information and keep this resource online as long as possible.

I do not want to make any immediate changes to site functionality. I'd like everything to stay "the same" as much as it can. You'd retain Admin privileges, though I'm not sure you're that interested in continued participation in the site. Moderators would all stay the same, etc.

    Why? What is your angle?

I have been a victim of the 'Facebook Group' migration since forums started shutting down 5-10 years ago. I've lost so many resources over the years. I reference VFRD at least two dozen times a year when working with people on VFR issues. I can't imagine I'm the only one. I simply want to toss out the life raft and keep it afloat.

I have no monetization plans, nor plans to hock it off to a third party. I'd be happy to sign a gentlemen's agreement as such.

What would you do technically now, and later?
Now, I'd simply get the site up to spec certificate wise, and cross the 'upgrade' bridge with the invision upgrade/server upgrade at the current provider.

After the site was situated, the goal would be to then develop a plan to move the site to its own home on AWS within the year to reduce future costs as much as possible, as well as to make future expansion easier.

Feel free to reach out on here, I @'d you on Facebook, or you can e-mail me tyler@-------.com. Happy to chat on the phone too. I really just want to save this website. I'm willing to put in the work and funds to do so!

A washer helper is always a great thing.

Do you use pipe tape, or pipe dope to keep the air from leaking around the threads? I tried using my MityVac

a few times but couldn't stop the air leaking around the threads, and taping all the fittings was just too much

of a PIA. But when it works, it is a great tool.

I did not have to do that, no. The suction on the tool seems to do a good enough job. I always do a few final quick crack open 'bleeds' while the other person is holding down the brake or clutch lever. Pushes that last bit of air out.

By the way, doing "the usual snorkel-flapper mods" isn't really a great idea.

Yeah, there's a lot of back-and-forth argument on this subject but I can tell you that 99% of the guys (maybe even 100%) who argue in favor of this modification have not read Chapter 21 of the 1998-2001 Honda VFR800FI Interceptor Service Manual, which is entitled, "Technical Features".

If you were to carefully read (and understand) the information Honda has provided in this chapter you would realize that disabling the flapper valve and messing with the snorkel is a counterproductive effort.  I'm not going to try and explain the whole situation here in this post to your forum thread, but the most important piece of information contained within Chapter 21 is that the VFR800 ECU runs in two different modes, depending on "demand" (which is closely, but not completely, related to throttle position).  In conditions of low demand the ECU makes its fueling decisions primarily based on information provided by the Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor, and in conditions of high demand the ECU makes its fueling decisions primarily based on information provided by the Throttle Position Sensor.

Now I'll leave it to you to carefully read and understand the Chapter 21 information and by doing so come to an understanding of why the snorkel and flapper are installed on the engine (and why the Honda engineers programmed the flapper to open and close when it does).

    I second everything you posted.

Both of my two 5th Gen VFRs are low-mileage but both of them have a good bit of carbon build-up on the intake valves.  I'm currently looking into various ways of cleaning them up.

Seafoam direct into the TB and a smoke show should help clean them up. Always impresses the neighbors when your vehicle becomes a smoke machine /s

  12. Mine has had ~32-38mpg since 1199 miles on the ODO. I manage 44mpg on the 8th gen. Wife gets 48mpg on her 8th gen, softer on the throttle and weighs less.

Rider weight and luggage also factor in. Heck, so does tire pressure. Rolling resistance goes up a ton even if psi is down by 5-10.

  13. I told you on Facebook, you are chasing ghosts. Early 5th gens aren't as gas mileage friendly as newer generations.

You describe pretty normal mileage for a 98-99. Sync those throttle bodies (mainly just good maintenance item to do for smoother riding), can take the injectors out and have them cleaned and flow tested, and check the FPR just in case.

The 6th gen got better gas mileage, and the 8th gen gets even better.
