  1. I was struck today, looking at the picture with the tank removed, at how simple that machine is, compared to the complexity of my fifth gens, which are becoming scarier for me to contemplate fixing. Very greatful for the factory service manual and even more grateful for the collective intelligence of this discussion group.

I tip my helmet to all who all the contributors.

  2. We here in the midwest US have these new things spread all over. But many of ours are in farm country. Lots of space for these here in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, places I visit occasionally in my former rides and now in my cage. I'm too old to go on multi-day trips. A tent and camping gear that fits in my hardbags (41L x 2) the tent is too small for my arthritic body to sqeeze into. Local day trips are it from here on. But I still enjoy driving my 2008 Civic manual for trips to the Rocky Mountains. If motel rooms are too expensive (increalingly common) I can sleep in the car. And my three year old dog, Mojo, can come along.

    Hello All,

Looking to pick the brains of those who know more than me about 5th gen VFR800 injectors - what can I upgrade my single-hole OEMs with?

Got the whole bike torn down for a massive project and thought I’d upgrade injectors while there. Just because.

Nothing wrong with the stock 5th gen units but injector technology has improved since the early pioneering days of fuel injection.

Here’s what I know and read about:

    1. 5th gen injectors are same as early Honda CRV cars and have a single hole

    2. 6th gen have 12 holes and same as early CBR1k (I think?)

    3. Mohawk is running early Fireblade injectors (4 hole?) on his 5th gen (would love to know more about this, mate!)

    4. Someone in this forum is running CBR1k injectors on their 5th gen

    5. Rangerscott fitted 6th gen throttle bodies to his 5th gen and reports better MPG

    7. MPG has improved quite a lot from 5-6-8th gen
    8. Some early Honda CRV guys are running Blackbird injectors in their built cars but having to boost pressure (read about this a long time ago...)

I’d love to be told there’s “X” injector with 12 holes that slots right into the 5th gen throttle bodies but doubt it’s that simple. What would you do in my shoes if you had the bike apart and the time to mess about with this?

Would love to be able to use 8th gen (or 6th gen) units but don’t know what needs modifying to fit. Don’t mind hackzing at things to make them work.

Open to all options and opinions. I could just leave it alone but kind of set on upgrading.

    Best,

    Stray

I tipped it over in the garage today while driving onto the dolly... rear tire must have not been lined up good enuf and I caught the edge and over we went.   Threw a leg out,  but that pig had other ideas...

In related news,  looking for 8th gen left side body work in red

The same thing happened to me earlier this year. Wearing a tennis shoe instead of my usual boots, the sidestand did not get deployed in time. Broke to bones in my foot under the cowl. Sucks the hind-tit bog water big time. (blush)

+1 Cogswell for the Michelin PR2's, my go to tires as well. For good all round performance, longevity and price.....a great tire. Probably not the best for high performance riders!:wheel:

However if you're like me....Faster than slow riders and slower than fast riders! They are excellent.:fing02:

Yes, a couple stopped and offered help. Since I was only 2 miles away from home and they were towing a boat, I did not want to put the through the procedure of getting a canister and fuel while hauling a boat. I called a friend who happened to be almost driving by my house (lucky me)! He grabbed the canister with my lawn mower gas from the shed and I was up and running 15 minutes later.

Since I had full leathers on. walking home to get fuel was not a great alternative.

    Thanks for asking MaxSwell.

PS: The last time I ran out of fuel before this, was 25 years ago (prior to cell phones) in the middle of nowhere, but this a whole another story involving a helpful farmer.

I also have a useful-farmer-to-the-rescue story: (I cannot remember exactly where it happened but it was on the way home from a Sum-Sum gathering in CO.)

It was late in the day and there was a camping sign on the highway directing my up a certain road (no distance information given). So I head that way and ran out of gas before I got to the campground. A family heading home came up behind me and asked if I needed help.

This was in the middle of nowhere in the dark. I explained I was just out of gas. So mom gets out of the van and says she’ll push me to their farm just up the road (on her feet, not with her vehicle). I reluctantly agreed (she explained she was a high-mile runner and it would be no problem for her). By the time we got to there place it was late; I pitched my tent in their yard and everyone went to bed. When I got up they invited me in and fed me a nice breakfast, filled my tank from their on-site tank (5.55 gallons) and would not take any money for the help. I thanked them profusely and heading on my way.

    Talk about a Good Samaritan!

Ran out of gas and found out that I can get 218 miles on one full tank and that the tank has a capacity of 5.565 gallon (pretty accurate to the manual). The reserve lamp never came on! Now, I know!

That is a very useful bit of information which should reduce the chance of it happening.

Did you meet any nice people providing help?

When that has happened to me, more than I'd like to admit (blush), I did meet some very nice peeps while twiddling my thumps while looking forlorn, or pushing my machine toward a refueling station.

  8. The first time I filled up my VFR in Oregon, I was floored tha the attendant wanted to fill my tank. So I said "Go ahead." Before he could start I could tell he did not know what to do. He looked at me with clueless eyes, so I said I'd do it and he was noticeably relieved. And I was noticeably happier! In the store to pay I asked why and was told it was to increase employment. I thought to my self "How much job satisfaction is there in that job." and went on my way shaking my head.
