DSCF2375[1]

FromMaine

Newport Wales transporter bridge. Sailing vessels used this Estuary at high water to get to the factories up stream, but it dried out a low water. So using a ferry to get across is impractical. The solution was to suspend what is pretty much an air ferry from cables from a high structure, no need for water to cross and the masts of cargo vessels could pass under. Turn of the century technology at its best!
