Finely aged

34468Randy

Passed the 200,000 km mark (124,000+ miles) a couple weeks ago on the freeway near Langley BC.  Stopped for a picture.  Should have brought some champagne.  At least a bottle of beer.  Been a very good bike to me but then, it is the only bike I have owned.  Lost my bike riding virginity to this bike in AUgust 2006 when I bought it still in the crate.  Salesman had to ride it to my house cause I had never ridden a bike u0p to that point and was not about to learn riding it home.  Treated Missy to a new air filter (K&N became landfill) fresh oil change and coolant flush.  I am sure it will make 300,000 km but whop knows if I will.

124k miles.  Wow!  And I'm sweatin' my 42k that's getting closer to 43k!  LOL!

Nothing to sweat my friend.  Regular maintenance and you are good to go.  But.  You should expect to replace your stator at least once and the regulator onece or twice.  But that is maintenance as far as I am concerned..

Replacing stator this weekend as a preventative maintenance (it hasn't failed yet).

I'm quite sure I need to replace the cam Chain tensioner too (making a slight knocking noise at idle).  Will do that in November when the riding tempo slows down some.  That requires removal of Throttle Body for the front bank of cylinders and I'm too lazy to do that right now.

Bike has been super reliable.  I love Hondas.

Yes.  I had that done way back Sep 23 2010 when the bike had 9691 KM on it (actually was 109619 KM it had already rolled) That was a little pricey.  $472.94 P&L But again, I believe that is maintenance. Things do wear.

The stator cost me US$200.  I believe the two CCT's would be around US$180 together.

That's not bad a price.  My first replacement stator installed by Racer's Edge in Vegas was $219.00 back in  2012.  It was an after market.  Had no choice there as the OEM were on back order and I was broken down while far from home. By 2014, the OEM stator was $314.18 up here in Regina Saskatchewan when I had to replace it again.  They also replaced the rect as well at that time. That total bill parts and labour, was $892.00  I think between the second stator being possibly a cheaper after market, and the hard riding in very hot weather for long periods of time, loaded to the max, cause the second failure.  Again while I was far from home.

I'm not an Engineer. But I've been told in another forum for another make of bike with similar stator failures, heat is the enemy of stators.  Since it's bathed in engine oil, there needs to be the right amount of oil and that oil needs to have the capability to dissipate that heat consistently especially under load.  In that particular bike, the manufacturer increased the stator output but kept the oil volume the same as the lower powered stator.  Result:  consistent stator failure within 20k miles, especially on bikes used extensively in high heat, high load conditions.

So with that in mind, correct oil quantity and quality (newer oil) matters.  Perhaps also prolonged running at 220 degrees F and above also contributes to how long your stator will last.  Honda recommends a 7,500 mile oil change interval on dyno-oil.  That seems too long to me.

Just my theory and based on pure speculation and internet educated guesses.

Another theory being (part of) the ethanol in fuel making it into the oil where it eats the lacquer of the copper windings...

That is an interesting theory. Wonder what the petroleum and oil experts response to this would be.
