Where / when.

I hate to see that in my mirrors. I've had my bike for 3 1/2 years (40,000 miles) and been pulled over twice (77 in 70 and 66 in 60), both times they were fishing for more. When they see its an old fart 49 yrs young I think they cut me and my buddies some slack.

Ride safe. Mark

What was the reaction when you asked if you could take a picture of the whole scene?

I have only been pulled over once on my motorcycle. The rest of the times when I had a cop behind me, I just ran like hell!!!! j/k

Later,

Jeff

I find that age and a bit of luggage (along with legit paperwork and no warrants) usually gets me a warning.

There are a million squids on red bikes that frustrate the cops but when they see I am an upstanding guy with a clean record, I get to go home. Add to that, proper safety gear and the "commuter look" and you have a trifecta!!

That's interesting that everyone else gets warnings...I thought it was just me and my good looks. I have gotten pulled over twice with warnings both times. The first guy had me at 70 in a 60 and let me go. The second time the guy just walked up, didn't even check my papers, and said, "I just want you to slow down. Most guys on these things don't even stop for me." Maybe he was giving me a hint for next time.

I have been pulled over a couple of times myself, both times let go w/ a warning. Both cops told me they ride too and complimented my bike and asked that I slow down. Its too bad I never had that happen in a cage, guess you need big boobs to get the warning in a cage.

I've had 2 pull overs, once they had report of someone on a blue bike ( when I had my YZF ) riding fast through the neighborhood, and another cop radioed that they cought the guy on the other side of town, then the officer proceeded to give me a written warning for speeding, when it wasn't me and I wasn't doing anything. BS. Then the other time was me rushing through a stop light, he didn't believe me when I said the sun got in my eyes, which it didn't, but I tried. No tickets, lotta oh $@#% moments as I've seen cops.

I got pulled for 70 in a 60, I really didnt realize I was speeding. I pulled over took the keys out, and raised my arms. I was as nice as possible. I got the ticket.

I asked the officer for a break. Asking him how many people ran, and at least I stopped. He said he didnt care if I ran or not.

I have been pulled over when I was young and dumb and (well you know!) for going 145 in a 70. Luckely we were pulled over close to where we lived and our small town cop came out and help talk the High Patrol down to 105 and we were able to ride home that night.

Since then I have gotten a lot wizer and like most of you as long as everything is good and you arent an ass you can get off with a warning.

A riding buddy and I both got yanked by the sheriff on our local mountain highway for 20 over. He let us off with a paid warning basically. The fine was for "wasting finite energy" at $30. The 20 over ticket would have been $145. I think we got let off pretty easy!

I passed a cop once, about 12 or 13 years ago. Nothing happened, even though I was doing probably 30km/h over the limit.

I doubt whether I'd get away with it nowadays.

The last ticket I got was just over two years ago - 132 km/h in a 100 zone. $300 and 40 points on my licence. :(

Mind you, I had 30 years of ticketless speeding before that...

Poor me! The story is quite funny actually, my man and I agreed at the start of our week long bike trip that if we saw the flashing lights the one behind would pull over, the one in front would keep going. Anyway, after being in a really slow speed zone which was driving us crazy, he pulled in front of a BROWN VAN with ANTENNAS!!!! This was a national park. I thought, oh s***, it's a ranger and they'll radio in to tell the police that we're speeding through the park. Sure enough, a few miles down the road, the cop is waiting for us. That is when we tried our approach, he took off, I stayed behind to get the ticket. But, they didn't like that very much and called another cop. They were actually pretty nice after we talked for awhile, I have a pic of me and the policeman together smiling at the camera

Ahhh, the excitement....

I don't usually get warnings. Sometimes it's b/c I'm too far over to let it go, but I think it's because I have had a few tickets over the last several years. Once they see my driving record, which is clean except for speeding tix, they'll write me another one. I've been trying to learn my lesson, but going fast is just too much fun!

Actually, I have slowed down in the car. Got popped by a very small town LEO on my bike a few months ago.

Funny how it always takes 2 patrol cars to hand out a ticket now, isn't it? I know there is safety in numbers, yada yada yada, but it seems ridiculous to me.

I don't believe I was ever pulled over by the cops in Oz (10 years of riding bikes legally on the roads and several years before that in the middle of the outback where you should have a licence but there just aren't any cops). In the cage, umpteenth dozen times, although fined, losing points or being given tickets, I think that only happened once or twice, (there's one anecdote that is a real fire-side story that I'll let y'all in on if you're ever over in Spain hahahaha). Plenty of "routine" checks, as I had a weakness for old cars.

Over the last 7 years I have been residing in Spain. Cops?? What cops? I've discovered recently that I've been driving (cars, due to spinal problems) without a recognized licence and have hardly even seen the fuzz, let alone be pulled over. I've travelled the length and breadth of Spain. My half orange (Spanish for better half) was pulled over once, I had wanted to drive but she insisted, luckily. A routine check!!

Since I've had the viffer, I've once again been riding, as I said unbeknownst to me, unlicenced (I talk about this in another post somewhere). I've had cops laugh at me, over a beer, when I mentioned I had cut down an L learner's sign to the minimum size to put it on the viffer now that I have a Spanish licence (two year's of restrictions :S). They told me that I shouldn't bother, as long as I've got some sort of insurance for third parties. I'm supposed to limit the bike to 24 kw or 250 cc during the first two years of my Spanish licence. These cops also said I shouldn't bother, or at least just have the power reduction down on the legal documents you're required to carry here, even if the reduction kit isn't connected. This is not entirely legal but 95% common practice. You can have half the blood-alcohol content but can't go over 80 km!!!! I'm breakin' out of my skin with it.

I guess it could go either way. At 35 and not a high-speed thrill chaser (well, the odd burst hehehe), and on seeing I've had an Australian licence for 17 years (even if not recognized officially, they like Aussies over here, we're a bit of a curiosity), and have a Spanish one (even though it's the two-year provisional one) and disregarding wild cards and young ambitious types, I'll probably get off with a warning if I claim I'm a "guiri" (gringo) and didn't know any better. Depends on the infraction.

On my bike, I've gotten pulled over twice. The first time was back in college when I only had a learners permit. It was late Saturday night and I was headed home from work. I was speeding. Also, riding at night and without a helmet was illegal for learners permit types like myself. Strikes 2 and 3 for me. He quized me at length and eventually let me go. He was on drunk patrol that night and I didn't fit the bill and he didn't want to deal with the paperwork.

10 years ago I pulled over on my CBR in San Diego doing 125 on I-15. I thought I was going to get a ride in the back of his cruiser wearing handcuffs. Nope, he read me the riot act and told me the paperwork wasn't worth his time because guys like me end up dead. I am older and wiser now but that beautiful VFR makes an attractive target for cops.

I have been pulled over more times than I can count in my cage. The most recent was 4 years ago as age has made me fatter but also wiser. With all that I have only gotten one ticket.

I have found that being polite and honest goes a long way. When asked, I have always fessed up to my speed. I suppose no warrents helps too.

The answers to the questions, that was this summer, on the way back from deal's gap (on that Cherokee Highway or whatever it was called). Ummm, also the cop's reaction to my wanting to take a pic, I think he was amused. B)

I was pulled over two years ago on the bike, out for a Sunday afternoon ride in on of the few areas in Illinois that has anything resembling curves. I got caught behind a truck, when a straight came up with a passing zone I passed the truck, approaching from the other direction was a local cop, I tried to slow down and went past the officer, I looked into my mirrors and did not see any lights. I went on up the road and turned into a resort to check on future availability for a stay, I had parked my bike by the entrance and was taking off my helmet, when I hear way off in the distance a siren, shortly thereafter the local cop pulls up behind my bike. The officer said that he had me at 59 in a 45, I responded that I had just past the truck and that I had not tried to elude him, he said that knew that because if I had tried that I would have most likely been able to. He also went on to say that I was lucky because if it had been the Illinois Department of Conservation Police instead that I would certainly recieved a ticket. I thanked him and assured him that I would slow it down.

I was also pulled over in Wyoming last year, there I was only doing 52 in a 45 just coming into this little town of Dayton. This is after a great ride through Big Horn National Forest where I had been riding faster than I ever thought I would ever be able to. I think I remember reading that our fearless leader (HS) had a encounter with a local officer in that area a couple of years ago also, his encounter turned out worse than mine, I got off with a "slow down", I thing Slammer got the full treatment though.

I do agree with others that have stated previously, if you have full gear, all your paperwork (registration and insurance card) and a clean record the police that you encounter will be a little more understanding.

I've had more tickets than I can probably remember easily. Ticketed for some really bogus thing, like "changed lanes without signaling" and "warrened" on speed. Learn to spell Ocifer.

Ticket for driving with rear window obstructed (fogged up). Cop said he was behind me with lights and sirens for a long way, I was just cruising with friends and had tunes cranked. Double

Then again have been pulled over and thought I was toast, knew I was wrong, and got let go. B)

MC cop pulled up next to me in my lane on the Fwy once as I was doing 80. I reflexively braked, and he kept going. Whew.

Last few years tickets have been at least 18 months apart, so I have been able to do traffic school, and keep a clean record.

Speed in the National Parks. Tickets you get there, stay there. Even if the park is in your home state.

My only ticket in 5 years was on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. One of the only cars I saw on my second day on the road was a white suburban with a forest ranger in VA. My radar was disconnected, I curse VA. He got me doing 72 in a 45, which is >25 over. That was on the bmw, I have only been pulled over once on the VFR, and that was passing an undercover car (Chevy Tahoe) on a double yellow. The line was so faded you couldn't see it and he said he only wanted to admir my bike. Never ran my liscense and not sure if he ever ran my plate.

What we need is a group buy for Valentine-1 radar detectors! And a write up on where to mount it and how to connect it to our bikes power supply. Does anyone want to do it? Might save us all alot of money in the long run! I may ask a member of this board who already has this set up (and needs it everyday) to maybe do a write up.

Rollin' down the Blue Ridge about 12 years ago with a few guys ahead of me I was doing about 80 around a sweeping curve on my ST1100, after getting behind the crew, when a Federallie pulled out and went after my compadries. He stopped us all and when he got to me he said, "I didn't clock you because I was turning to get the others". (they got nailed for doing 55). Then he said, "I have one of those ST1100's and I know I can do 80 in most places on this road.

Now I gotcha ossifer. I asked with a knowing grin, "how do you know that, you must have done it". Then I said, "I can't do 80 on this road and I don't like going above the limit so I would like to suggest something. Let these guys off with a warning and I will take the lead for the rest of the ride and hold 45. Call ahead and if you clock us over 45, have a field day". He went for it and we got off at the next exit because trying to hold 45 on that road burns out your brakes.
