Doing some work and looking to get a new radiator cap... but looked it up... 40ish dollars? What?

Have you found an alternate for fair bucks?

I put in a Partzilla order Jan of 2020 and knew one item was a cap,  so I pulled the invoice to check the price. $19.76.  Methinks what you are experiencing is post pandemic shortages pricing.  I had my furnace serviced in August like every year.  Last year, $80 as it had been for years.  This year,  $135 - a 68% +/- increase.  Definitely made me draw a breath. The tech told me they were getting 100 calls per day to have home A/C installed, but they can't even get their hands on an A/C unit TO install. So, what then becomes the price if they could get even one?  And it's not that it costs them that much to make another rad cap,   but it may be due to logistics bottlenecks that it costs more to transport in,  or they just cannot get more. So they jack the price. I've noticed Mobil 1 is hard to get at Wally World. Probably the same issue. Many other examples out there. The shortage of truck drivers is severe.    Not sure there's a short term solution. We're paying millions of people more to sit on their butts than they make working,  so WTH - kick back and enjoy. That may be about to change tho. Meanwhile we have record breaking job openings that can't be filled. Prices are bound to go up until that is righted.  Welcome to socialism.

As far as a cap goes,  mite have to go with a knock off until prices ease - there might be an interchange to an automotive unit,  maybe a Civic or similar that could be cheaper.

Well jeez, digging some more, the filler neck part fits most all VFR800s 5th and 6th's......so I go to 2009 6th and the cap is 20 bucks.

That should work....right? (Why does Honda do this...grrr)

I've had good results with Stant caps.

10227  13lb - 0.9 bar

10223  16lb - 1.1 bar

The only issue I had was on a 1986 VFR where the filler neck was not in the best shape and it just didn't want to seal.  I installed a Honda one and it sealed.

There's also some Napa part #s that are Stant:

BK7031695 - 13 lbs

BK7031712 - 16 lbs

They are a classic style cap with the ears, not round.  I had to trim them down on one of my VF1000.

Also double check the angle of the tangs that apply the pressure when you "tighten" the cap, I've had one that needed some adjusting (And doing that still didn't help on the above mentioned VFR).
