Running issues

Recommended Posts

Hi all, thank you for the add.

I do not own a Vfr but I am trying to help a friend get his going. He bought the bike a 99 Vfr 800, it ran fine on the way home and a couple of other rides.

However he has now developed a fault, he had the F1 fault code flickering when the bike was ticking over, and it has cut out a couple of times whilst riding and he has noted that it is when he switches his lights on or brake lights. His mechanic has isolated the side stand switch as it was faulty and told him to try it while he ordered a new one. We went to go out this morning and it won't start. We could here a relay buzzing on the right side under the seat and another under the dash when you flick the hi low beam switch, the fuel pump also primes when the clutch is pulled in. Apologise for the long post but we are struggling to find the issue. TIA.

First thing is to check the state of your Battery and Charging System.

Buzzing relays is a sign of low voltage to the relay coil.

Charge the battery using an external charger, remove it and take it to any good auto parts supply store and have the battery load tested.

Once the state of the battery is sorted or replaced, and if you can start the bike, check the charging voltage at the battery at idle and 5000 rpm. What voltage do you read? Normal voltage should be around 13.5 to 14.5v.

You can download the Service Manual from this forum if you don't already have one.

The Fuel Pump should prime at every Ignition switch ON (with the kill switch in the Run position). Not when the clutch is pulled in!! Clutch switch has nothing to do with Fuel Pump priming.

You might be also having issues caused by a bad earth block. This is taped up in the wiring harness just above the chain guard. Its a common failure point causing multiple issues. See photos.

Also have a very close look at both of the 30amp main fuses. Check for any overheated fuse connections and burnt wiring especially for Main Fuse B.

Main Fuse A is on the Starter Relay, check the state of the electrical connector and wiring to the Starter Relay this can also suffer from burnt overheated connections.

Let's know how you get on.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well after spending a couple of evenings trying to find the fault we gave up. He is going to take it to a mechanic to get it looked at as we did not feel comfortable messing around with the electrics. Will let you know the outcome. Thanks for all the help and advice peeps.

Won't surprise me if it's a ground issue - very common and an easy fix.  Grum's post would probably help the mechanic - many aren't versed in the eccentricities of our V4's.
