Member Contributer kwharwood Posted July 2, 2021 Member Contributer Share Posted July 2, 2021 VFR Sojourners, For three years my bike has stood completely iddle in the garage and will do the same for one additional year ( 0 additional miles on odometer). Every July 4th weekend, I kickoff the festivities by changing the oil/filter in my unridden bike. My questions: 1) Is it unneccesary to change the oil/filter every year despite the fact that it has not been started or even ridden? 2) How long is recently purchased oil 'good' in a sealed manufacturer's container (shelf-life)? Thanks, for your comments and help, KWH in ATL 2005 VFR800A w/ 38K miles
Member Contributer ShipFixer Posted July 2, 2021 Member Contributer Share Posted July 2, 2021 Google says shelf life is five years. Stuff that breaks down oil otherwise all only occurs while your engine runs: shear stress and contamination from piston ring blow-by (fuel dilution and exhaust gases). Member Contributer kwharwood Posted July 2, 2021 Author Member Contributer Share Posted July 2, 2021 ShipFixer, Thanks, for your reply to my questions! So, I've been wasting my time thinking the oil was oxidizing from it's interface with air and internal metal parts. KWH
