Member Contributer Philois1984 Posted October 17, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted October 17, 2020 Bit of a trivial question here for our American contributors, but I often here in movies or read in books people ordering a breakfast in America of say bacon, eggs, hash brown and Jelly? What is jelly in this context? Is there one type or several. Here in Australia jelly is a sweet you eat with ice cream. Puzzled 😕
Member Contributer mello dude Posted October 17, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted October 17, 2020 Jelly and jam, you put on toasted bread and butter...... Apple, strawberry, grape, blueberry...ect .....
Member Contributer TheLimey Posted October 17, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted October 17, 2020 The jelly you're talking about is Jello to Americans. When Americans say jelly they're referring to jam.
Member Contributer St. Stephen Posted October 17, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted October 17, 2020 +1 mello dude. To be spread on toast. Not to my taste, but superior to cooked tomato...for brekkie! 😄
Member Contributer DannoXYZ Posted October 17, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted October 17, 2020 Grilled or fried tomatoes are good! Frying some blood sausage and baked beans right now! Jelly is slightly different from jam. Doesn’t have as much fruit and more fruit juice and gelatin. Kind of in between jam and jello. Unfortunately in U.S., both are made with high amounts of HFCS. The smaller brands tends to be better in not using the stuff.
Member Contributer Skids Posted October 17, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted October 17, 2020 Mrs Skids makes her own jam. Beautiful on toast. Never been a big fan of jelly, looks too much like a special effect monster puke on Dr Who.

Sparkie
As an American, I'd like to share one of our jokes. What's the difference between jelly and jam? Well, I'm not going to jelly my dick up your butt. 🙂 Btw, jam has pieces of fruit in it, jelly does not, jello is for dessert.
Member Contributer Philois1984 Posted October 17, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted October 17, 2020 Thanks everyone for clearing that up. I had heard it was like jam but couldn’t imagine putting it on bacon and eggs. It’s all down to what you grow up with I guess. I will have to give it a try. Sorry to disagree St Stephen but I like nothing better than lots of fried (red) tomatoes with my bacon and eggs, heaven!
Sparkie
Here we put hot sauce on our eggs. Jelly can go on the toast if you like. You put jelly/jam on your eggs?

We all enjoy our Vegemite For breakfast, lunch, and tea. This is jelly This is jam on toast For Americans, dessert thing above that comes out of mould is what we call Jello or gelatin-dessert. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012BD3E10 Jelly is more concentrated and does come in jars: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005HPMO7A it’s similar in thickness and consistency to Baxter’s mint jelly used on meats. Although Coleman’s Mint Sauce is closer to jam since it’s chunkier. Here’s how to make homemade jelly. https://oldworldgardenfarms.com/2018/08/14/grape-jelly-recipe/ Although I certainly don’t like it on my bacon or eggs. It belongs on toast only! Or biscuits, or croissants. My wife’s British so we have Marmite for toast of course! And I like this hot sauce on my scrambled or omelette eggs. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U9W15US have you tried apple-butter or lemon curd? I hate it! 2 great nations separated by a common language eh As it's Sunday morning, I'm going to make a cup of tea and have some jam on toast. Member Contributer Thumbs Posted October 18, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted October 18, 2020 Sat in a diner in Salinas one morning I was just opening a small jar of Marmite when an adjacent person called out loudly “Marmite ...Marmite ...that stuff tastes like a cats ass” .....whole diner laughs ...not to be at a disadvantage I leapt to my feet, proffered a hand and said in an equally loud voice “ Sir, I’d like to shake your hand, I’ve never met anyone before who tasted a cats ass, then admitted it to so many people”
