5th gen dirt road adventure

Recommended Posts

The day started cold, very cold but not having ridden for a long time I was keen to go. Expecting it to get colder I even wore two pairs of socks , thermals ,t shirt ,jumper ,jacket and wet weathers over the top.
The ride was not mine ,but I was invited as I have a reputation for ,shall we say , taking the vfr past where most people would. I acquired a set of 6th gen wheels and put some dual sport 60/40 tyres on . Let’s go.

The plan was to ride out of Sydney and out to mudgee for the night using dirt roads where we could. I met with my mate who was on a bmw gs adventurer. First stop was Grey Gums Cafe for coffee . After coffee we headed for commission road which is 50 km of pretty good track with some sandy bits ( which I didn’t particularly like) and some rocky track which I had to pick good lines on due to ground clearance issues. It was challenging as originally I was going to find a second hand fairing to put on just in case ,but couldn’t find one before I left for the ride.
Awesome scenery ,no other vehicles and a change from the tar. Weather was varied sun, wind, rain usually two at a time and once with all three. There were four gates to get through , each time we were hoping they were not locked , coming to the end ,we could see the main road ,it was 10 metres away ,the Gate had a chain and a lock , thankfully you could lift it over the post. once through the gate we read the sign “ road closed” maybe that should have been at the other end.
Back on the tar the vfr felt surprisingly good on her new tyres , I think these might be my new “go to” tyres . I like dirt roads and I also like to play boy racer. They gripped very well and at no time did I  have any heart in mouth moments. They seem to be a very good compromise.
Accomodation at Mudgee was good with a garage for the bikes. Next morning we headed for hill end ,then home via Bucketty . Only around 50 km of dirt again with a few causeways with water , nothing the vfr can’t cope with. Once again my vfr proved itself admirably, I don’t think it’s every ones idea of fun but why limit yourself to the black top, with a multitude of tyres out there now good grip in all conditions can be had.
Is it a dual sport , umm no , do I think it’s a dual sport ,no. Is it a capable touring motorcycle that can handle pretty much what ever you throw at it ,yes. I must say ,they do look good wherever they areDD033012-A675-47BC-8C84-C2F30D771F8E.jpeg.a157ecd8ba70c0cf6ac2cd6282666b37.jpegC3BB4198-0040-43B5-9F36-C3D2598A5289.thumb.jpeg.0d711a6e6a085625706b1000e3086e6b.jpeg625435CC-7CE0-4EF5-AE6C-4489754BD814.thumb.jpeg.1f08a2f6f930282e57f9850ffa64a88a.jpegare.08997828-9BA5-4A79-AAA8-D87E20BC3D07.thumb.jpeg.fe0003da7c6e4495549bb3dcc5e7875f.jpeg

"Road closed"....

Isn't that Ozzie speak for "please come in"???? :goofy:

I can attest that V4's can go pretty much anywhere......  with -as you mention- a few 'heart in mouth" moments indeed....

Nice write-up and pix.  Thanks for sharing!

I imagine having a more versatile bike means having many more riding options, depending on where you live.  As I've been bike shopping I did check out some adventure style bikes, including the BMW F750GS and R1200GS, but I don't really have much desire to go off-road, and in my area I don't know that there are many off-road route options anyway.

Also, having ridden down a few gravel roads over the years, I think I'd be a little more comfortable on dirt.  Not sand, but a nice packed dirt road would be okay.  😉
