5th gen rear brake adapter - interest check

A year ago I went down the path of de-linking my VFR brake system.   The front brakes were pretty straight forward using the VTR setup.   However, in the rear, it was a bit more involved.  I didn't want to use the OEM caliper and modify it.  So, I designed an adapter that mounts on the existing hanger to mount a standard Brembo P32 caliper.   If you are planning to de-link your VFR800, 5th gen, this is a good solution for the rear brake.   It gets rid of the large OEM caliper.   This adapter bolts on to the stock hanger and will mount a Brembo P32 caliper in the same OEM underslung position.  The advantage of this adapter over a complete hanger is that disassembly of the hub and spindle is not necessary.   Well, also, it is simpler and therefore lower cost. 

 

You will need to make sure to source the correct version of the caliper as there are a few available. You must get the version where the bleed nipple is on the side closest to the mounting ears, same side of the banjo bolt.   I got the version where the bleed nipple was farther from the mounting ears.   It completely crashes the spokes and the tire valve.   As you can see in the attached pictures, the bleed nipple and banjo bolt are on the side opposite the wheel when mounted.   The P34 version is slightly bigger (34mm vs 32mm) and the pads may be too big for the rotor.   Also, make sure you have enough brake line length reach the caliper.  Bleeding will be no more difficult than the stock one.  Although, it may be easier to flush/bleed it before mounting. 
 

Anyway, this is just an interest check to see if it is worth making another batch of five or more.   Cost will be around the same of $125 plus shipping.

Tirso is sending me a P34 caliper to design around to.  This version will clear both.  The P34 will have a 50mm wide pad opposed to the P32 40mm pad.  As noted by someone else, please consider sizing the master to match.   Of course, greater braking is afforded by the P34.

As an update, the design now clears both P32 and the P34!

 

The first pic is the P34 (from Tirso) and 2nd pic is my black P32.

 

The 3D printed part was ver 1.5 and it just kisses the pads with a couple thou of clearance. For the current ver 2, I just pushed the face out by another .040" (1mm).

Nice progress! Curious if you were able to move the caliper inboard enough to get the whole pad inside the OD of the rotor to accomodate using a new rotor and not having to trim pads.

Thanks!    I'd like to get everyone's vote on this change.   I'm OK with it even though I already trimmed my pads.  They are close to being replaced anyway.  It's only a few clicks to make the change.

For the people interested in this adapter, please state which caliper you have or intend to get.   It's looking like a version for each is needed.   I made the change to move it inboard and it was more involved than first envisioned.  I have a few hours into the redesign now.

 

The P34 looks to be made for a different size diameter rotor, maybe.  Just eyeballing it.  But designing to the P34, then fitting the P32 doesn't work.   Then designing to the P32, the P34 is off.

 

There are enough small differences that two adapters are needed.  One for each caliper.

It appears that the dimensions of P32 vary with port arrangement. On the first page of this thread I posted the dimensioned schematics of P32 and P34 from OPP's website, they are an authorized Brembo distributor. I checked again after your previous post and noticed the links weren't showing the images as I posted them so I changed them to links to the actual files. I also looked at other calipers and it seems that the P32 with radial ports like yours (P32F) differ from the axial port ones (P32G) that look like Tirso's P34. The schematics I linked earlier show the axial port style to be identical except for piston diameter. The radial port ones like yours however, have a much narrower pad and the mounting holes 1mm further inboard than the other style. The axial ones also have a 2mm narrower swept area, which might negate pad trimming without moving the caliper inboard. The P34 only appear to be available with axial ports, at least from OPP. I would be happy to use a caliper of your choosing if this is becoming a royal pain in your rear.

Thanks for those drawings!   It confirms my findings with the 3D parts.  So, it still means two different adapters.   No difference to me since I machine them one at a time anyway.    I feel this is a good time to see if I can get deposits before making chips fly.  I will double check fittings since I do have both calipers.    Keep in mind, these calipers are designed for a different rotor and we (as in me) are fitting either caliper to fit a common rotor by best fit.  The caliper is over-sized for the rotor or another way is the rotor is undersized for the caliper.   For rear braking duties, I feel it is more than adequate.    

 

If you don't have a caliper already, the ideal caliper is the P34C or the P32G.  Both are dimensionally the same, using the same pads, more clearance and easier routing with axial ports with just different pistons.

 

Let's move forward with this as weekends are getting tied up with other projects and summer is nearing it's end.

I can weigh the new calipers and bracket if someone else can weigh the OEM caliper.   Remember, there are other items removed if de-linking the brakes (extra lines, hard lines, joints, etc).

 

Also, someone else will have to comment about 6 gen fitment.  I don't know.  Like I said before, I can simply send you a 3D printed part for you to check fitment.  But then you would need a caliper or at least borrow one.

The weight savings will be huge, with the de-link and smaller caliper. 
 

6th Gen swingarm is 25mm longer. That’s the only difference between it and the 5th Gen swingarm. The bearing carrier, bracket, axle, etc, are the same.

Adapter with 4 bolts = 1.6 oz.

P34 caliper with pads = 10.9 oz.

Total = 12.5 oz.

 

I will have time this week to machine the first two parts for P34 calipers.  New stainless bolt kits ordered as well.  Stay tuned.

Did you ever come to a conclusion, one way or another?

Yes, the caliper has been moved inboard to avoid any trimming in the latest version.  The adapter fits both 34c and 32g.   I only Dremeled mine because I'm still running my first prototype with a 32f caliper.

Eric PM'd me that my adapter is on its way!

 

I apologize for the questions, but in looking through all of the de-link threads I found, I wasn't clear on a couple of issues.

 

Of the three 14mm rear M/C's that have been mentioned (RC51,SH and F4i), which requires the least amount of modification?

 

In Mello Dude's write-up over at another site, he mentioned that the RC51 M/C required cutting off the banjo bolt locator tab and shortening the push rod.

I'd like to avoid that, since I don't have access to many tools.

Will the existing reservoir fit without issue?


Since the bracket can accommodate 32 or 34, I'm leaning towards 34.
Does it matter when choosing the M/C?
